Chapter 168: Chapter 168
While they were still talking, the defence attorney walked by, 'I hope you are going to round off your case now because it is finished. The sympathy of the jury is with Richmond and your star witness has made it impossible for you to do anything further that could influence their decision.Just accept defeat and be done with it and let's save each other's time and the time if the state as well'.
Hoberman looked at him with pity but refused to dignify what he had said with a response and when the already furious Jason would have reacted, he held him back, shaking his head against any violent action he might take out on the attorney.
The attorney laughed and walked on with a smiling Richmond in tow.
'This is what happens in court houses. You do not have to allow yourself to swallow their bait', Hoberman advised Jason. 'This is aimed at lowering the person's confidence and lead the person into making some form of mistakes that will cost the person dearly.Have you thought how this would affect your case if it were reported in court that you just proved how incapable you are of controlling your emotions which confirms all they had said of all you had done to Richmond. You would just succeed making him to look the victim and attract more sympathy and you can find alot of reporters here waiting for any juicy gossip. And you know that they are airing this case live because of how affluent and famous the both of you are. The masses would just swallow whatever they air as being the truth and your reputation would be ruined forever'.
Jason looked around and saw the reporters loitering round looking for stories to write.
'You are right', he said,' It is just that I hate those who are taking advantage of others. Look at that lawyer for instance, not caring for Nancy's health and using her for his selfish benefits and getting us client acquitted'.
The court was recalled and the judge announced that he was going to give his final judgement.
'Mr. Hoberman, do you have any other witnesses or should this case be closed right now?'
As the case was going on, it was being aired live on TV and Rebecca, Jason's ex wife happened to be listening to it and wondering how it was going to end. She had noticed at the party that Jason had been distracted, on his focus had been on that wimp of a girl.
She hadn't known then that she was pregnant but had observed her natural beauty, elegance and youth and had known then that she did not stand a chance against her if she really felt for Jason how he obviously did for him.
That was why she had drawn back from disturbing Jason but the same girl is in a law case again Jason, saying all these things about him.
Rebecca knew that Jason could not do all that the girl had confessed to witnessing Jason do and she felt pity for Jason. It would seem that the poor guy was really unlucky in love. She could imagine what her testimony must have done to his heart. Her betrayal of her ex husband would be child's play where this was because his reputation was at stake as well.
She was going to take advantage of it. She was going to make sure she was there to offer him a shoulder to cry on and from that warm her way back into his heart and life.
The court session continued without interruptions.
'I want to call on Mr. Christopher Whitman'.
Chris went up to the witness stand and took his oath. This was the first time they were calling him to the stand.
'You are a practicing lawyer as well aren't you?'
'Yes I am'.
'So you know that your testimony here could affect your carrier if you gave a wrong testimony?'
'I do'.
'Could you tell us what happened at the hospital?'
'Objection my Lord. What has the event at the hospital got to do with the supposed abduction of Miss Jones?'
'Your Honour, I am trying to lead you to lead the court to seeing that the events at the lodging house and the hospital are interrelated. If you would permit me, you will soon find that out'.
'Objection overruled. It must be relevant and relayed to the case, Mr. Hoberman. Mr. Chris, answer the question'.
'We took turns to take care of both Nancy and Jason- sorry Miss Jones and Mr. Campbell at the hospital. I had come with my children because they wanted to see their aunt Nancy and uncle Jason.
Jason had just woken from his unconscious state. He had been unconscious all the while since his collapse at being shot and kissing so much blood at the lodge.
The first person he asked for was Nancy and when he was told that she had to be operated on to get the bullet that lodged in her brain out, and had been in a coma since then. He left his bed and went into her ward against the doctor's advice and tried to speak to her because he had heard that patients could hear when they were on a coma. I watched him express his grief, calling her back and telling her all the reasons she had to live including for her unborn baby. I know all these because I had followed him being anxious because he was still very weak and not fully recovered. I felt that he might faint again'.
'Objection, My Lord. How does the feelings of the man affect this proceedings? Mr. Hoberman is intentionally wasting the time of the court with these stories that of no relevance to this case'.
'Objection overruled. Mr. Cobberson, you have to be patient and let's get to the end of the narration before jumping to conclusions'. The judge said really upset with the defence attorney.
'Mr. Chris, please go on!'
'The doctors came to check on him and give him his drug and I had to take h back to his hospital room. The drugs were so powerful, they put him to sleep immediately. My children were being noisy, so in order not to disturb him, I took them to the reception but I soon followed them back into the room because while I was asking a nurse some questions, they ran back into the room. I came there to scold them when I saw this huge man whom I layer learnt is called Maze.He was in a doctor's uniform and when I read the name, I was shocked because I knew the doctor who went by that name and this man didn't look anything like him. I asked him some questions the doctor should know and he tried to shy away from it by saying he was too busy to answer any questions but that after his duty hours, I could come and have a chat with him.
It was when he had left that my children told me that they had seen someone enter the room and thinking it was a doctor assumed their uncle had woken so fast. So they had come to see him and ask the doctor when we could all go home'.
There was murmurings in the court and the mantel came down, silencing them.
Chris continued when the noise had died down.
'I felt disturbed. Why would another doctor pose as a well known doctor? Except of course he was not a doctor. I ran with my children to Nancy's ward and into her room and was happy when I saw her lying there alone. I had assumed that the man had come there as well. I had been told that one of the men who kept her captive had escaped and I felt that he might be the one, come back to finish the job he could not complete'.
'Objection, my Lord!' Cobberson shouted.
'Sustained. Mr. Chris you must stick to the event and keep your feelings and thoughts to yourself'.
'I shall try my lord'.
'You must do more than just try, Mr. Whitman'.
'Okay your Honour'.
Doctors came to see Nancy while we were there and we were asked to leave. As we were about to leave, my son's toy fell down and he bent to pick it and saw a pair of feet behind a curtain in the room.
He called our attention to it and at first, I thought it was another prank not to leave the room but he ran and pulled up the curtain.
We were all so shocked to see someone there and it was none other than the Maze man. What could he be doing in Nancy's room after visiting Jason's room?
He saw that he had the element of surprise because before we could recover, he ran pass us and pass the gate before the security at the gate was alerted.
I do not want to air my feelings and thoughts but you could well imagine what someone who escaped at a shooting scene that bore casualties would be doing in both their hospital wards!' Chris concluded.
When asked if he wanted to cross examine the witness, the defence attorney said he didn't.
