Chapter 147: Chapter 147
Chris did not know if he should apprehend the person walking briskly away from what looked to him to be Nancy's ward or to rush into the place to confirm.
He couldn't possibly accuse someone just because they were walking briskly away from somewhere. So he dragged his children hurriedly into Nancy's ward.
She looked so white with the machines all round her. The atmosphere and appearance of everything was eerie.
With thumping heat and trembling hands, he drew close to Nancy to feel her heartbeat.
In his haste, he did not notice a moment in the room. The person who had got to the room a few seconds before him hid behind a curtain.
He was sure now that this Whitman guy suspected him. Why else would he come to Nancy's ward from Jason's?
Chris moved close to Nancy's bed and felt her pulse. It was very faint but it was still there and he heaved a sign of relief.
He wanted to leave but something made him hesitate. He did not know what it was but looking at Nancy, he felt like staying a while longer with her.
He hushed his children and asked them not to make a noise.
They just stood by Nancy's bed, each holding her hands and squeezing.
Chris looked at them and could see how sad they were.
'Dad, when will aunt Nancy wake?' Vera asked.
It occured to Chris that Vera had regered to Nancy as aunt. It was formerly just 'Nancy'. Tears stood in his eyes but he willed them away.
'Very soon but we have to pray for her', he said, hoping to God that he was right. His children had grown attached to Nancy and though as kids they would soon get over her and get attached to someone else, it might still affect them and he didn't want that.
He decided that he was not going to being them to the hospital again. Thank goodness they had seen both Jason and Nancy.
They were there when the doctors came to see Nancy's chard and the readings on her heart.
Vaughn dropped a little toy superman he had in his hands and as he bent to pick it, his eyes happened to move toward the curtain where he saw a pair of shoes. It looked suspiciously like the one the doctor in uncle Jason's room had on.
'Why is the doctor staying behind the curtain?' he asked innocently.
'Keep quiet, the doctors are working. They have asked is to leave and we should so that they can do what the came here for', his father cautioned him crossly.
'But Dad...'
'Shut up and let's leave'.
As they left, Vaughn was not very happy. He was still bothered why a doctor would not come out and examine his aunt Nancy with the other doctors.
So he pulled his hands off his father and ran to the curtain and pulled it up and behold, the imposter was standing there, hidden by the curtain.
Chris who had run after his son, wanting to scold him for playing pranks was dumbfounded. His son had been more vigilant than he himself and had just saved Nancy because the doctors may not have thought to check the curtains like he didn't and the man would have had ample chance to end Nancy's life for real.
Before he could react, seeing that he had been caught, Maze rushed out of the room.
Chris was fast and held on to the lab coat he had stolen but Maze was faster as he thought fast on his feet and pulled the coat off as he ran off as shputs 'Imposter!', 'Murderer!' rented the air.
The doctors were surprised, they had not expected such a scene but the head specialist recovered quickly and called the security at the gate not to allow anyone out of the hospital premises. But he did not do it early enough because Maze who was fast on his feet as the criminal that he was, had been running but as he drew close to the gate, he started walking briskly to avoid suspicion and had just walked briskly out of the gate just as the call ended and the security shut the gate. It had been a narrow escape.
He cursed those children.
They had been responsible for the fouled plan. He would deal with them next time because it was not over.
He planned to keep trying until he had succeeded in ending the lives of those two people who had put them all in this mess.
Inside the hospital, everything was riotous and the police had been invited and they asked for the description of the imposter a d Chris who had had a brief discussion with him about the name Parker Ratfield described him as best as he could. His children also supplied details that they could remember and though the police kept their suspicion to themselves, they felt sure that it was Maze because the description matched him by about 95% .
'It is evident that the lives of these patients: Jason and Nancy are in danger. Either you increase the security around them or they should go home where there would be more people caring for them', the police suggested.
'That would have been good but one of the patient is in the intensive care unit. How can she be safe in the house?' the doctor in charge of Nancy asked.
'Well, I do not know about that and we have alot of pending cases and I can't afford to spare my men now, they are needed. But you could discuss this with Campbell, I hear he is now conscious'.
This reminded Chris that he had locked Jason up in the room and he felt that he would be awake by now and may have been knocking but the ru'ckus caused by the imposter must have prevented them from hearing any noise from the room.
He quickly returned to Jason's hospital room and found Jason seated on the bed.
'Why did you have to lock me in? What was the ruckus about?
' Don't take it too seriously but my children just saved both your life and that of Nancy'.
'What do you mean saved our lives?' he asked bemused.
Chris went ahead to tell him all that happened in his room and Nancy's ward .
'The police have checked everywhere but can't find him. My guess is that either he escaped before the police were called in and the guards instructed not to let anyone out of the gate or he is still around in one form of disguise or another', Chris said.
'I don't think so. He is very lithe for his heavy frame. He has escaped but he will be back. He will try again'.
'You seem to know him'.
'He is the goon that escaped. He has come to complete the task that he could not complete but when he tries again, that would be the last task he takes on himself.
I shall personally guard Nancy in her ward. She will not be moved from here. She is in a critical condition and any movement could be detrimental', he said deep in thought, wondering why he had not thought of it, that Maze would want to make an attempt on their lives here at the hospital to prevent them testifying again him and his gang.
