Chapter 142: Chapter 142

Suddenly, there was sound of a police siren coming their way and Jason heaved a sigh of relief.

He was beginning to think that all hope was lost because what use was it fighting with one's fist against a blasting gun by a professional shooter?

As he ran towards the rock, a bullet caught him on the shoulder, he still kept running and praying the police would get there in time.

As he was about to jump behind the rock, another bullet caught his leg.

The police came and so did the last goon to help Maze in the war outside the gate.

The police asked them to stop shooting but they seemed to have gun deaf.

'You are surrounded, surrender yourselves. Stop shooting. This is the police!'

The shooting halted and Jason smiled at Nancy.

'We made it!' he said.

Nancy could see that he was growing weaker.

'You have been shot!' she screamed.

'It is nothing provided that you and our baby are safe! I will be treated. It is no big deal'.

'But it is!'

She stood to call the police to send for an ambulance and one single shot rang out.

Nancy fell.

Jason whose eyes was gradually closing rushed to her and seeing blood, screamed to the police to send someone over.

Two people were sent to them and they carried Nancy bleeding from the head into the police van and Jason staggered after them thinking that his life was over.

How could Nancy survive with a gunshot to the head and in her pregnant state too? Just when he thought the war was over and they were victorious. What victory was it without his Nancy?

As soon as he got into the car, he collapsed. He had bed too much.

An ambulance was wired for and it came swiftly and took the casualties to the hospital.

Maze and the goon who tried to escape were caught and apprehended but on the way to the van, Maze escaped.

The police promised to look for him. They already had his description.

The lodge was searched and Rodney was found and the other two goons who were just coming round were also apprehended and taken to the station.

Jason was told all this layer after he had come to about two days later.

'What about Nancy?' he asked.

The police as well as his sister and Chris who had stayed back for linger than they had planned to help with the missing Nancy Kept quiet.

Jason recalled the last sight he had had of Nancy was of her bleeding head being carried into the car.

'Where is Nancy?' he shouted.

'Her injuries were much so....'

'Go on, so what happened?'

'Well they had to perform a surgery on her. You were still unconscious and they needed someone to sign, so Chris did for you'.Sally explained.

'You have not answered my question yet!' he shouted all the louder.

'Well we do not know if the surgery will be successful or not. The doctor said she had 50% chance of surviving.

The bullet lodged in a sensitive part of her brain'.

'Please get the best Neuro surgeon for her. She does not have a choice but to survive. And if anything happens to her, I shall shut down this hospital!' he threatened.

'I wish to see her'.

'The doctor said no one can see her just yet. The surgery was concluded yesterday but she is yet to wake. She is still in a coma. We have been asked to keep our fingers crossed or pray for her if we know how to do that'.

When Jason heard that, he could not remember praying before but he started murmuring some words of prayers to whoever was up there that listens to prayers.

'The police have been checking on you and want to get your statement.

He wanted Richmond to rot in hell. He was not going to cooperate but if his statement would serve to nail Richmond's coffin, then he would do that.

'I am angry with the police force. I sent several messages, if you had come when you were supposed to, Nancy would still have been okay by now'. he accused.

'Take it easy Jason, you are not yet fully recovered. You list alot if blood and you are weak. It is a miracle that you are still alive. Don't strain yourself too much', his sister said anxiously.

'Well, Mr. Campbell, we got the message late. It may have been tampered with somehow or the network or something and when we got it, we were led to another lodging.

We search all through but didn't find anything there and had to apologize to the inhabitants.

We could have thought that it was a crank call but we knew you could not do such a thing and started looking at other out of the way lodgings. We were going to give up when we saw your car somewhere along that road that seemed abandoned and deprived of live.

We started tracing the tire imprints we saw on the road and more over we got intelligence that there was lodgings somewhere on that road and that was how we got there.

We are sorry we got there late but not too late to save you from eminent death obviously', smiled the inspector understandingly.

He had been in love before and knew what Jason was passing through.

The feeling was a very powerful one. It could destroy and it could mend.

'What use is this life you have saved if Nancy is not here to share it with me?' he wailed.

Phoebe had been quiet all this while. She felt guilty. She never meant for anyone to die. When she had gone into partnership with Rodney, she had thought that he would take Nancy far far away where she couldn't come between her and Jason but though she was sorry for the state she was in and feared that she might not survive, Nancy was still there between Jason and her.

Jason had not once asked how she was, or even ask about her at all. To him, she did not exist.

Sally looked at her and smiled sympathetically at her.

She was happy for one thing though, all the fuss about looking for Nancy had caused Jason not to take her to the doctor for a second opinion concerning the DNA test.

She knew it was not over since Nancy was still hovering over and between them but at least she could enjoy her reprieve.

When she had first heard that Jason had been shot, she had nearly had a hypertension.

That was when she realized that it was no longer just pretense but that she had fallen in love with Jason.

She sincerely wished that the baby she was having was his but it was too late in the day for that and such wishes could not come true now.

Afterall it was said that if wishes were horses, beggers would fly.
