Author's pov
" Orni, breakfast is ready. Don't be late, beta(dear)," Srilekha called Orni who was brushing her hair looking at the mirror. It seemed like she was lost somewhere.
Srilekha called again," Orni."
Orni jumped a little bit when Srilekha's words reached her ears. She replied," Coming, Ma."
Entering the dining space she found her father already seated at the breakfast table with her sons. Both of them were wearing school uniforms and looking adorable. They smiled at her while munching on their toasts. She took a seat beside them while patting their heads affectionately.
" Eat properly, Orni. Look how much weight you have lost," Sanjay said serving toast and poached egg on Orni's plate.
Orni took a look at herself and indeed she has lost weight. She was looking different than before specifically her eyes and skin were looking a bit yellowish.
" Are you ok?" Sanjay asked noticing the changes in her.
She assured him," I am good, Papa."
They started having their breakfast though Sanjay's eyes kept observing Orni. Something didn't feel right to him about her.
It's been two years since VR's arrest and Orni moved on with her life. She was now leading a quite happy and peaceful life with her sons and parents. Roman and Rion started going to school recently where Orni works as a classical dance teacher. She got this job last year. In one word, she was doing great with her life.
In these two years, she never heard of VR again or didn't pay much attention to his news. The fans of Ranvijay Mehra aka VR tried their best for his bail but the court disapproved of their demands. After shouting and barking for a few days everyone started forgetting about him just like Orni.
" You are looking a little bit pale. What happened, baccha(child)?" Orni's mother asked noticing her face.
Orni answered smiling," What? I am good, Ma."
" Your eyes are a bit yellow too. You seem ill to me," Srilekha pointed at her eyes. Sanjay diverted his eyes at Orni with concern.
He observed her closely and his wife was telling the truth. Orni wasn't looking ok at all. Her pale face, yellowish eyes and frizzy hair were indicating that something was wrong.
" Once you return from the school I will take you to the doctor," Sanjay said.
Orni insisted," I am good, Papa. Nothing to worry about."
" No arguments," Sanjay dismissed the discussion. Orni looked at her mother helplessly.
Srilekha folded her arms," I am not going against your father."
" It seems like you guys really want to take unnecessary tension," Orni mumbled and finished her breakfast.
Saying goodbye to her parents she started her journey with her sons as always.
She was sitting inside a taxi and looking outside through the window. She didn't want to remember VR but somehow VR's face flashed in front of her eyes. His words rang inside her mind and she recalled the promise she made to him.
" Mumma, look," Roman pulled Orni's dress pointing his finger outside.
Orni looked outside and noticed that the taxi was stuck in the traffic. She diverted her eyes to where Roman was pointing.
" I want a Daddy, Mumma," Roman demanded still looking at the man who was holding a boy in his scooter.
Rion questioned sounding sad," Why did we leave Daddy, Mumma?"
Orni was baffled by her son's question. She always avoided their questions about their father and tried her best to make them forget about VR. But, Roman and Rion never forgot their father. They miss him badly and wish their mother to bring back their father.
" Because your Dad hurt Mumma," Orni answered honestly softening her eyes.
Before Roman and Rion could ask anything further Orni started panicking. She felt a sudden pain in her abdomen that led her to scream painfully. The boys got scared watching their mother in pain. Both of them started crying loudly.
" What happened, mumma?" Roman shook Orni's trembling body.
Rion cried," Mumma, are you ok? Please talk."
Orni couldn't answer because of the gut-wrenching pain. Her eyes moistened and the next moment she threw up on the taxi.
" Lady, are you ok?" The taxi driver questioned sounding disturbed.
Orni answered with great difficulty," 99******* please call this number."
A few hours later
" What happened to our daughter? Is everything alright?" Sanjay questioned the doctor who was checking Orni's reports. Srilekha was already wiping away her tears.
Shivansh questioned again," Why did you shift her to the emergency ward? Is there something serious?"
Orni was taken to the hospital by her parents once they got a call from the taxi driver. Sanjay informed Shivansh about Orni's sudden sickness and he didn't waste another moment. He rushed to the hospital hurriedly.
" Yes. Something serious," The doctor adjusted his glasses before diverting his gaze to Shivansh.
The doctor started explaining," The patient has kidney complications."
Srilekha sniffled after hearing the doctor. Sanjay was dumbfounded by the doctor's words.
Shivansh blinked his eyes," How? How can she have kidney complications?"
" Well, from the patient's medical history, I got to know that she was drugged severely which led her to some mental problems. Later she was under medication to treat her mental conditions and the medicines that were used to treat her had side effects on her other organs specifically the kidneys," The doctor explained everything.
Shivansh clenched his jaw tightly and cursed VR for drugging Orni.
" That bastard ruined my daughter's life," Sanjay's eyes moistened.
Srilekha sniffled," I wish that monster dies in jail."
The Dr added further," Moreover, the patient failed to understand the seriousness of her situation. She thought the antibiotics will help her."
Sanjay sounded shocked," Antibiotics?"
" Yes. The patient thought she was suffering from normal fever and fatigue. So, she just took antibiotics. For a long time she had been consuming antibiotics making her situation worse," the doctor explained making them numb. " Don't you know that she was having antibiotics without any doctor's prescription?"
Srilekha hiccuped," She never shared what was bothering her."
Sanjay remained silent looking down. He was guilty. He has seen Orni taking some pills. He thought those pills are for headaches. Nothing serious. He wished he confronted her. But, the main question is why she hid such a trivial matter.
" What are you suggesting dr? I want my sister healthy," Shivansh asked controlling his emotions.
The doctor answered leaning on the chair," Kidney transplant."
Everyone looked at each other's faces with unexplainable looks.
" This is the only way to save her and the surgery should be done as soon as possible. It would be better if the surgery is done within this week," The doctor explained with his professional voice.
Sanjay answered," Then, fine. Do the surgery. If it's the only way to save my daughter then I have no problem."
" Yes, doctor. And, don't worry about the expenses," Shivansh added.
The doctor chuckled," Money is not the problem."
" The main problem is a donor," The doctor said increasing everyone's tensions.
The doctor started explaining," Kidney donors are rare you know. Cheery on top even if you find a donor the donor's blood group has to be similar to the patient. You know how rare is the patient's blood group. It's AB negative."
" You should arrange a donor as soon as possible," The doctor suggested.
After agreeing with the doctor they left to meet Orni who was laying on the hospital bed. She was talking to her sons with her weak cracked voice.
" Why did you hide your health problems from us?" Sanjay's loud voice boomed.
Srilekha questioned with her shaky voice," Shouldn't you consult a doctor before taking those antibiotics?"
" Why did you hide what you were going through?" Srilekha asked bursting into tears. " We are your parents. At least you should have shared your problems with us."
Orni cried out," I did not want to see you guys in distress for me. I have given you enough headaches. I just wanted to sort out everything on my mine."
" Except for anxiety and distress, I have given nothing to you," Orni hiccuped. " I did not want to be a burden again."
Sanjay answered," I failed as a father. I couldn't even make my daughter believe in me."
Orni felt her heart burning after hearing his disappointed voice. She couldn't tolerate her father's tears.
" I am sorry, Papa," Orni apologized while Sanjay left the room with a heavy heart.
***************************************
" I miss you a lot," VR whispered finishing Orni's sketch which he has been drawing on the wall.
Placing his head on the wall he murmured," I am sorry, Angel. I wish I could go back in time and............."
He couldn't finish his sentence and a fat drop of tear left his right eye. He regretted whatever he did to his innocent angel.
Well, VR spends his time drawing Orni's face on the wall with charcoal. Her smile is the only thing that kept him alive otherwise a lot of time he thought to finish himself. He knew that he deserved this punishment for his sins. He knew that he deserved all the hatred.
VR's concentration was interrupted by a Constable. He turned behind hearing a harsh voice.
" Someone is here to meet you," the constable said opening the door.
VR did not react because he knew who was it. It was none other than Akash. Though VR is in jail, he couldn't stop himself from stalking Orni to know what is happening in her life. Always he would be eager to know how is Orni, his sons and Neela. So, he ordered Akash to keep bringing news about them to him.
VR stepped into the meeting room balancing himself with the help of a strong stick. He had lost so much weight that now he had to take help from sticks to balance his body.
" How is Orni?" VR questioned Akash who was looking at VR with pitiful eyes.
VR creased his eyebrows watching Akash silent. His gut feeling was saying that something was wrong. Something might have happened to his angel.
" Is she and the boys alright? How is Neela?" VR questioned sounding concerned.
Akash answered," Neela and the boys are fine but Orni madam............."
VR's eyes got clouded with anxiety," But, what?" He yelled.
Then, Akash explained everything to VR about Orni's health. VR stumbled backwards after hearing everything. He couldn't balance his body anymore. He fell to his knees.
" Bhai," Akash said holding VR in his arms.
A painful growl left VR's mouth," I am responsible for her situation. I should have suffered like that. Not her."
" You are already suffering," Akash tried to console VR but his dry words didn't work.
VR punched the ground drawing blood from his knuckles," I am the root of all problems. I should have died."
" She is innocent. Why God is punishing her for my sins?" VR kept yelling in his remorseful voice.
For the next few moments, VR kept cursing himself for Orni's situation. He tried to harm himself but Akash didn't let him. He even snatched a gun from the constable and tried to kill himself but it wasn't that late. The constable snatched the gun from him and punched him in the nose.
The constable shouted giving VR a nasty glare," You deserve that dark cell." The constable stared dragging VR.
" Akash," VR called wiping away the blood from his nose. " I want to save Orni."
Akash questioned," How?"
" Convince Shivansh to meet me," VR ordered Akash and the next moment he was thrown into the dark cell again.
