Chapter 15: Chapter 15

: Possessive

→Narrator: Kam

When I saw Asa coming around the back, my heart skidded to a stop.

She was so beautiful, it hurt to look at her.

I felt my heart constrict within me as she tucked an errant loc behind her ear, long earrings, dangling, baby hair, gelled to perfection.

Her hair, thin faux locs, coiled up midway through the end, was done in a stylishly messy bun, that I wanted to mess up when I kiss her. She wore a large T-shirt that clinged to her slender curves, beautifully, ending just below her round ass, exposing golden brown legs that I wanted wrapped around me and tangled up with mine.

Every single second I spent without her was unbearable and seeing her, not being able to talk to her, was driving me nuts.

I wanted her so much it hurt.

A low annoying whistle suddenly came from Teriq, a guy from the neighbourhood, beside me.

He had shown up with a group of friends, moments after we pulled into the driveway, with beer and pizza, introducing themselves as our neighbours. We had started a barbecue and they had decided to stick around.

Well, now, I wish they hadn't.

"Damn, Kam! You been holdin' out on me! Din't tell me you got fine asses wichya." Teriq grinned, taking his lower lip between his teeth as he eyed them. "I got my eye on that one. That one right there." He actually pointed, staring lewdly and unabashed at Asa.

My. Girl.

I felt a vein pop as my fists tightened.

"Watch it." I warned him, lowly, trying to rein in roaring anger. "She's off limits."

"Well, Kam." There was a taunting smile on his annoying face that I wanted to punch off as he sized me up. "What you gon' do if I don't?"

I stepped closer to him menacingly, all traces of common sense, effectively thrown out the window as rage pumped blood to my veins, overtime. "I said," I growled, lowly, "watch it."

The smile was gone now, an evil smirk, replacing it. "You tryna come at me, pretty boy?"

"Woah, hey hey!" Jemi suddenly came between us, pushing Teriq back. "You ain't about to start a fight in our backyard. You got sometin' to settle, we settle it like bros. Peacefully."

Teriq glared at me, then at Jemi and his menacing sneer, transformed back into a playful grin.

He raised his hand in surrender. "Don't mean no harm. Just fuckin' witcha."

I watched as he stalked away towards his group of friends who had watched our confrontation with attentive gazes, ready to spring into action if one of their own needed help.

"Be careful, Kam. This isn't the island. Kids our age here, think they're the closest thing to God. They're trouble. Remember that before walking into a fight."

I nodded at him, raw anger, receding back into its tresses. "I swear, if he steps an inch close to Asa, I'm shoving my boot down his throat."

"If he tries shit with Asa, we split the whole business of kicking his ass and hiding his carcass. I got your back, bro." Jemi placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder and patted twice.

"Thanks." I gave him a small smile, glad he was here after all.

"So?"

"So what?"

"Are you gon' talk to Asa yet? You gats tell her how you feel."

I closed my eyes, pressing two fingers to my temples. "Man, I was down for that a second ago. Then douchebag comes along and starts talking shit."

Jemi nodded, understand. "A'ight. I get you. Goodluck, though. You'll need it."

Well, turns out I did need the goodluck.

Why?

Because Asa was fucking avoiding me... Again!

No matter how much I tried to get her alone, she just seemed to slip through my fingers like I was grasping at air.

And then, there was Teriq, who was deadset on getting Asa to notice him.

There was an obscene, almost maniacal kind of satisfaction I felt when she told him off and put him in his place while we were eating grilled chicken around the evening fire.

"Yo, I may have a girl as pretty as Asa here for a girlfriend but I'd still cheat, no cap. There's too many of you pretty chicks for a sinner like me to remain faithful. Ain't no bitch alive that will tame me." He ended the last part with a wink at her and she had snorted and stuck up her nose at him in that demeaning way she usually looked down at people.

"Your first mistake was thinking I'd stoop so low to date a dog like you. Don't make that mistake again."

His face flamed up as his friends whistled and jostled him for getting roasted by Asa.

"Whatever." He said. "She's not that hot, anyway."

"Ah, Riq! You just saying that 'cause you been burned good!" Devontae, one of the cooler guys from his clique, shoved him.

"Fuck off." Teriq snapped, walking away.

I grinned inwardly.

Teriq made me protective of Asa...

No. Possessive of Asa.

I knew I shouldn't treat her like that, she was more than an item to possess, she was human and she belonged to herself before she belonged to anyone.

But I just couldn't stop myself from wanting to prove she was mine and I was hers.

Jemi had adviced I don't go to her. That I let her come to me. But it was taking everything I had in me not to walk over to where she was and take her in my arms.

She was talking with Kosi and Lola and she kept glancing at me, desperately tugging her shirt, trying to pull it down to cover more skin until Kosi slapped her hand away.

I chuckled to myself. Kosi had probably forced her in that get up. It wasn't her usual style.

"So, as I was saying. I've been to Italy before. My dad has a vacation home there, but I think I prefer Greece," the girl beside me said. I looked at her, struggling to recall her name, and failing.

She was Teriq's sister... Or cousin. Whatever.

I gave her a generic reply along the lines of "yeah. That's cool."

She beamed at me.

The girl was pretty but there was something wrong with her. She kept batting her eyelashes rapidly at me, like she was possessed and the thin straps of her shirt kept magically falling down her shoulders.

She'd peek at me from underneath heavy lashes and smokey eyes and flutter those lashes so quickly, I started thinking she was epileptic.

"So, how about we ditch the others, yeah?" She asked, taking her bottom lip between her teeth, her voice lowered to a purr. "I know a place you'd like."

Uhh... I struggled to look for something to say.

"Hey!" Soft hands went around my waist, hugging me from the side. My heart thudded painfully as I looked into her beautiful coffee black eyes that reminded me of plane crashes and thunderstorms.

"Sorry I took so long. Miss me?"

As shocked as i was, my hands automatically went around her, holding her in place as I hugged her to me, breathing in her rich chocolate scent that I missed so much.

"Always, Asa."

She was smiling at me.

She looked at the potentially possessed creature in front of me. "Hey."

The girl scowled, narrowing her eyes at Asa. "Hey. I'm Amander." She looked up at me in annoyance. "Who's she to you, Kam?"

"I'm his girlfriend." She beat me to a reply, stressing the word meaningfully. "Name's Asa."

"What? Your parents couldn't name you Ass 'cause it was already taken?"

Asa's eyes blazed. Gone was her plastic smile. "You're one to talk, seeing as you're named after a salamander."

The girls eyes bulged and she scoffed and left.

"Girls keep flocking to you like flies to shit."

"Did you just compare me to shit? I don't know whether to take that as a compliment or an insult." There was a smile playing on my lips.

"Take it anyway you want." She smiled back.

Her eyes were big and round and she was finally in my arms, where she belonged.

And everything seems right in Kam's world again.

"You've been avoiding me."

She lowered her gaze, refusing to look at me.

Slowly, leisurely, I kissed her cheek, very close to her lip, satisfied with sensing her shiver in my arms as I dragged my lips across her skin to her ear. "We have a lot to talk about."

She whimpered softly when my lips found her neck, pressing another soft kiss there. "I know, Kam... We... Kam!"

"What?" I smiled against her skin, nuzzling her hair, sending her shivering again.

"Stop that!"

"Stop... What?" She shivered when my hands skimmed her ass. "This?"

"Kam, everyone's watching." She said, through gritted teeth.

Good. "Let them watch."

"Kam!"

I inhaled the skin on her neck, gripping her hair as my lips travelled slowly to hers. "I miss you, Asa."

"Let's go to the beach!" She squeaked suddenly.

I smiled against her skin, stroking her hair, softly. "Let's."
