Chapter 299: Chapter 299
Landon Sutton glanced at her, and Shannon Quinn said with a smile, "If I go alone, I won’t know your friends. While you’re talking to others, I’ll just hang out with my girlfriends for a bite."
Landon Sutton frowned in confusion and asked, "Am I not treating you well enough at home?"
Shannon Quinn hurriedly waved her hand, "No, no, I’ve gained over ten pounds!"
The next day Sh annon Quinn finally went out. Walking with her husband was a completely different feeling from shopping with her girlfriends.
The three of them started chatting incessantly the moment they met. Shannon Quinn casually mentioned inviting the other two to the event Landon Sutton talked about tonight.
It turned out that Susan Wilde said, "I probably can’t go. Shawn Rhodes said he also has an event tonight. I guess his dad might also attend, so he asked me to join him."
Erin Bishop added, "Isn’t it a coincidence? Zane Rhodes invited me to be his date tonight too. Could it be the same event?"
Shannon Quinn, however, caught onto the juicy part, "Zane’s back?"
"He got back last night, called me from downstairs, came up for a glass of water, and I sent him away."
"Just a glass of tea, that simple?"
Erin Bishop rolled her eyes, "What else do you think happened?"
"You know what they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder."
"To hell with your romantic notions!"
By the time it was past four in the afternoon, the three women went their separate ways to prepare. Shannon Quinn pried a bit from Landon Sutton and only learned that it’s about an old veteran of the business world announcing his retirement and the distribution of his properties. Shannon Quinn wasn’t familiar with this stuff, nor was she interested, just wanted to get out for some fresh air.
On the way there, she messaged her two friends to confirm that Erin Bishop was indeed going to the event, while Susan Wilde hadn’t dared to ask Shawn Rhodes.
In the car, Susan Wilde sat in the back seat, wearing a black strapless dress, her long black hair draped over her shoulders, with exquisite makeup on her face. The scars on her temples, not fully healed, were nearly hidden by her hair.
In the car, neither of them spoke a word. At some point, she heard him make a call to Rowan Alder, but they seemed to be in a spat because Rowan hung up on him.
Susan Wilde stared blankly at the night scene outside. When the traffic light turned red, Shawn Rhodes lit a cigarette and glanced at Susan Wilde in the rearview mirror.
She is undeniably beautiful, quietly so. If it weren’t for this marriage, she might have found a great guy.
"Do you feel comfortable at home these days?" he asked.
Susan Wilde snapped out of her daze, turned to him and replied lightly, "It’s alright."
"Without me meddling in your affairs, of course, you’re more comfortable with your wild men."
Susan Wilde didn’t explain anything, she just didn’t like the smell of smoke and rolled down the window a little.
As the light turned green, he threw away the half-smoked cigarette, started the car, and said, "Watch yourself too, or you’ll get caught red-handed someday."
"Thanks for the reminder."
Shawn Rhodes gritted his teeth, deliberately increasing his speed.
As they drove up the mountain road to the top, Shawn went out of his way to open the car door for her when they arrived. She was a bit surprised, and after getting out, saw that his dad was standing not far away, chatting with an acquaintance.
Seeing his outstretched arm, she took it and played the part of a dutiful wife.
Susan Wilde, dressed in all black, her fair skin glowing, looked like a night sprite, captivating to anyone’s glance.
The summer night mountain breeze was slightly cool but very refreshing.
Susan followed Shawn along the large circular swimming pool and into the hall, where she spotted Shannon Quinn next to Landon Sutton. Their eyes met, and only then did a smile appear on Susan Wilde’s face.
Shawn lowered his head and glanced at her sideways. When he saw her smiling, his gaze froze for a half-second, then followed her line of sight, seeing Simon Rhodes standing with Landon Sutton.
He wasn’t sure if that smile was directed at Simon Rhodes, but he spat out a sarcastic comment, "Spotted a wild man? You’re smiling so brightly."
Upon hearing this, Susan Wilde’s smile immediately faded, but then her gaze landed on another familiar person, and she said with a grin, "Just keep an eye on your own wild woman."
Right after she spoke, Shawn also spotted Rowan Alder in front, standing next to a mature man who looked about forty-something.
Shawn instantly left Susan Wilde behind and walked over, frowning at Rowan and whispering, "What are you doing here?"
The man next to Rowan looked at Shawn and smiled, "Isn’t this the Rhodes family scion? I’ve been hearing about you from friends around me lately, didn’t expect to bump into you today."
Shawn seemed to have no goodwill towards this man, too lazy for pleasantries, he directly grabbed Rowan’s arm and pulled her aside, questioning her, "Why are you in contact with him again?"
Rowan pouted, feeling aggrieved, "You didn’t bring me, so I had to find Vance."
"Do you not know what his intentions are?"
"Precisely because I know, that’s why I approached him. I know he wouldn’t refuse me," she seemed to imply, complaining about Shawn’s hesitance with her lately.
Upon seeing his father entering, Shawn hurriedly said, "Laura, don’t cause trouble for me. Go upstairs first, I’ll come find you later, just stay away from that man!"
After saying that, Shawn hurriedly left, fearing to be seen by Mr. Rhodes again.
It was obvious Rowan was doing it deliberately. After he left, she returned to Vance, whispering sweetly as she held his arm, engaging in animated conversation.
It was Erin Bishop’s first time attending such an event alongside Zane Rhodes, the first time assuming the role of his date, standing by his side.
To be honest, her heart was unsettled. However, seeing Zane’s calm demeanor, she controlled herself, not letting her inner feelings show.
On the way over, the two only exchanged a few words. When others asked about the woman beside him, Zane glanced down at Erin and simply introduced her as his "date."
Shannon Quinn had left Landon Sutton and joined up with Susan Wilde. Upon seeing Erin arrive, she waved at her.
Erin threw Zane aside, saying, "I’m going to find my friends."
Zane gave her a cold look, nodded expressionlessly, "Okay."
Erin walked away fuming, thinking to herself, "Is saying a few more words too much to ask?"
The three women gathered at such an event were bound to engage in gossip.
Erin was the only one from within their circle. Although familiar faces were few, she knew most of them, aware of who was whose lover and who was involved in inappropriate affairs, secrets even gossip reporters didn’t know.
Shannon Quinn suddenly pointed with her chin in a certain direction and asked, "Hey, is that woman Rowan Alder?"
