Chapter 61: Chapter 61

Chapter 61

After a while, I stopped paying attention to Rika's case. It no longer had any relevance to me. Initially, I was quite apprehensive about this unusual case, but over time, that sense of worry faded away. Sometimes, it would just become a topic of conversation during our meals.

However, that doesn't mean I forgot. Occasionally, glimpses of something would trigger thoughts of that horrifying case, sending shivers down my spine.

"Regarding resigning, can you reconsider, Flora?" My boss leaned forward, speaking gently, and I couldn't ignore his demeanor.

"What's there to think about? I've already completed the collaborative project with the DIZ Corporation, and any unfinished tasks have been handed over to others." I replied matter-of-factly. He had no more grounds to question me as I had successfully accomplished all the important tasks.

Boss looked puzzled, glancing between me and the resignation letter in his hand, "I disagree. You've been doing an excellent job. It's highly impossible to find someone as capable as you."

"Someone as capable as me?" I raised an eyebrow, questioning. It was true that I believed Boss and all the company's employees thought highly of my skills and abilities, which is why someone like Mr. Enzo Robert had taken notice of me.

But they didn't know what I had to give up to achieve the current level of success. I wasn't useless, but when facing Enzo, I could only comply helplessly. If it weren't for his sudden interference halfway through the collaboration project with DIZ, I wouldn't have had to make such sacrifices.

"Indeed, you don't need to be modest." Boss chuckled.

Seeing my silence, Boss presented an enticing proposal, "You see, now if you were to move to another company, you'd have to start everything from scratch, even if it's a high-ranking position, adaptation takes time. Through this collaboration project with DIZ, you've done exceptionally well, and you're also the financial director of the company. Your superior is only me. Do you really want to resign?"

Upon hearing that, I felt a slight tremor. It was true that I held the position of financial director at present. And my company, though smaller than DIZ, had its own overseas branches and was well-known.

Thinking back to the time before I knew Enzo's true identity, I had to juggle three jobs, all of which were menial and paid very little. It was a tough period, and it wasn't until I secured the position of financial director that things stabilized, and this achievement wasn't due to the collaborative project with Enzo.

"I'll reconsider..." I said.

The boss displayed clear satisfaction and continued, "I know you still have many doubts and concerns. It's right for you to reconsider. The company has also made such remarkable progress thanks to your contributions. I really don't want you to resign, Flora. You need to think this through."

I didn't say anything more, just nodded and left the room. People in the company hurriedly approached me, asking questions, but I just smiled and brushed it off.

During dinner, I shared the day's events with Ron. He also advised me not to quit because achieving what I had achieved wasn't easy, even without the collaboration project with DIZ.

However, I had a condition of my own.

"For all projects, contracts, policies, and meetings related to the DIZ corporation, I won't participate. If you accept that, I'll withdraw my resignation," I said firmly to the boss.

The boss looked at me with a mix of perplexity and reluctance, but my determination left him no choice but to agree.

"You can assign those projects to someone else within the company; there's no shortage of talent here," I stated.

The boss sighed. "If it were that simple, it would be great, but DIZ only wants you. They won't cooperate otherwise. Dealing with you and them puts me in a difficult position."

Hearing this, I didn't feel guilty about my decision, only saying, "Well, then you have to make a choice. Good luck."

The boss failed to elicit any sympathy or pity from me.

With the project concluded, Enzo no longer employed those peculiar terms and strange affections towards me. However, I believed he also felt remorse for how he treated my son.

As usual, when I returned home, I found Min sitting by the door. She was huddled, her legs drawn up, and her face buried in her hands, her eyes closed as if she were incredibly weary.

"Min, why did you come here?" I gently shook the little child, feeling the cold floor beneath us.

"Mom, Mom's back now. Didn't Dad tell you anything last time? I waited for you to visit me, but since you didn't, I asked Dad to bring me here." Min innocently spoke.

It was only now that I remembered that Enzo had indeed said something like that when we met at the police station, but I had thought Enzo was just using Min as an excuse, so I firmly refused.

"Well... your dad did mention it, but I've been really busy lately, so..." I quickly stumbled, trying to hide my embarrassment.

Ron returned, also surprised to see Min. I thought he might not be pleased since I was only staying here temporarily; it wasn't actually my home. However, contrary to my expectations, Ron wasn't annoyed or showing any similar expressions. He greeted Min warmly and spoke with her, even though she didn't respond.

"Min... seems like she doesn't like me," Ron said to me with a hint of sadness.

I sighed and shook my head. It wasn't that Min didn't like Ron; she was like that with everyone, not just anyone in particular.

"Min... your daughter, she resembles Enzo a lot," Ron added.

I didn't deny that, as it was obvious. Rollo didn't share many similarities with Enzo, so from the start, Enzo suspected that Rollo wasn't his biological son. But with Min, it was the opposite. She inherited Enzo's entire appearance, both in personality and spirit. She resembled him so much that sometimes I even thought Min was a female version of Enzo.

"Ron, I've found a good apartment," I said.

Ron quickly sat down next to me, looking puzzled and concerned. He said, "Why do you want to move? Isn't it good here? I have no ill intentions towards Min. I only said that because she reminds me of Enzo. Please don't be angry."

I was taken aback by his words, realizing that he had misunderstood me.

"What I meant is, I've been staying at your place for a while now. You've helped me a lot during this time, and I've also found a suitable apartment," I explained, looking at Ron's anxious and confused expression, feeling both touched and amused.

Ron remained silent, bowing his head before looking up at me with a question in his eyes. "Can't you stay here? You don't need to look for a new place," he asked.

I shook my head, knowing Ron well, but that didn't mean I wanted to intrude on his life. "That's a matter for another time. In two days, I'll go see a new apartment if you're available to come with me."

"But... Rollo will be very sad... you should think about our son. The little one has just gotten used to this place, sudden changes in his living environment won't be good," Ron softly spoke, hinting for me to reconsider.

I knew Ron wanted to hold me back, to keep me with him because of his feelings, but I felt uncomfortable because he suggested I think about our son.

It sounded just like Enzo's words from before. He had always told me to stay with him for Min's sake.

"Ron, I have my own decision. Rollo will also be happy if you come to visit the little guy," I said, then stood up and walked straight into the room, leaving Ron with a surprised look.

Entering the room, I realized I had been a bit harsh with Ron. Suddenly, I felt weighed down and exhausted. Both Ron and Enzo were like that, always advising me to think about our child before making decisions.

I sighed and sat down on the bed, perhaps I had become too sensitive to such words because time had influenced me too much.

"What mother wouldn't want to do what's best for her child?"

"Mom, are you not asleep? Can I sleep with you?" Min opened the door, her hopeful gaze fixed on me as she asked.

That night, we slept together. I didn't ask Min why Enzo didn't come to pick her up, because I wanted her to be able to stay with me, which I thought would be better.

In the middle of the night, unable to sleep, I looked at Min. Her eyes were closed, but I knew she wasn't asleep.

"You're not sleepy either, huh?"

"Mom, is Dad really bad? Is that why you didn't come back?" Min suddenly asked, catching me off guard and making me worried. I didn't want my children to know about the issues between Enzo and me. But Min was old enough to understand things, and she was quite intelligent. "Uh, I'm sorry."

"Why are you apologizing when you haven't done anything wrong? Since I was little, Dad never cared about me. He just sat and watched TV, throwing around random things, while Mom worked three jobs to support all three of us. Dad never came to pick me up from school until after Mom decided to get a divorce. He hid his noble and wealthy identity, he knows that Mom had to do three jobs simultaneously, but he never asked or comforted."

"Even when he's Enzo Robert, and we lived in that big mansion, he still looked down on Mom—"

I looked at my daughter, who understood the situation and wanted to cry, but I didn't want to hear her continue. "Min, that's enough. You're already being so good to me. That's why, between your father and me, we can't continue. I don't want to live a life chasing after one person."

Min listened to my emotional outpouring in silence. But no matter what, I wanted her to forget the past. A father's image is crucial to children.

Before going to sleep, Min turned to me and said, "I can understand you, Mom, but I'm not sure if Dad can."
