Chapter 13: Chapter 13
Chapter 11
Mrs. Clea quickly snatched me up, went to my room, and shut the door. Yna and Gina were left outside while Mrs. Clea was tense inside our room. "Don't you know how dangerous what you did was, Amara?" Mrs. Clea’s voice was angry. I bit my bottom lip because I knew Mrs. Clea was right. I consider myself fortunate to be alive. Because it's wrong no matter which way you look at it.
"I'm sorry," I admitted regretfully. I overheard her sighing incongruously. "The last thing Vikki wants you to do, Amara, is get involved with the Alpha King because you know how dangerous he is!" Mrs. Clea said as I bit my lower lip. Is the Alpha King's attitude truly so bad that she fears for my life?
"Is he really that cruel, Mrs. Clea?" I asked, looking her in the eyes. I've seen everything earlier, so why don't I believe it now? Is it true that I am so blind to the truth that I refuse to accept everything?
Mrs. Clea came up to me. "You are very beautiful, Amara, and this must be one of the reasons why you are still alive today," Mrs. Clea said as she carefully examined my face. "Because if it's just a normal occasion…your head is probably rolling on the floor by now," she said quietly as she backed away from me and approached the door to possibly leave.
"Your work is done for the day," she said as she left my room. "You will be assigned to clean the guest room tomorrow, so be early," Mrs. Clea said as she left.
When Mrs. Clea left, Yna and Gina entered and inquired about my condition. I assured them that I was fine, but they remained by my side until they were called to work. The rest of the time, I remained inside the room, unable to sleep. I'm still processing everything that happened earlier.
I still can't believe the Alpha King isn't the person I imagined him to be. Maybe I was just too blinded by his status and appearance to notice that even when I heard bad news about him, I didn't listen and believed.
So now I'm here, and I'm experiencing trouble, particularly with what the Alpha King said to me. I'm not sure why he didn't arrest me then. I don't want to think that Mrs. Clea said that the Alpha King didn't arrest me because of my face.
But I also don't understand why he just let me go and forgave me. But this time I think owe him that forgiveness. He stated that I am now indebted to him.
Now, I am afraid of what might happen.
When the time came for dinner, we were all summoned. The frequent stares of my fellow housekeepers became more intense, possibly as a result of what had occurred earlier. The brave housekeeper had answered the alpha rudely, and the word was sure to spread.
"You've only been here in the palace for two days, but you're already famous!" Yna laughed. "But I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, Yna," I explained.
"Let them be, Amara," Gina said. It's a good thing Yna and Gina are with me because otherwise, I wouldn't have much to show for it.
While eating, I couldn't help but hear whispers about me.
"That's why she has the courage to fight the Alpha King because—"
"It's not because she's beautiful that she has the right to fight the Alpha King. Maybe because she’s just a thick face!"
"What you say is that maybe she wants the Alpha King’s attention because she wants to be queen. As if she would be the Luna of our Alpha king. The Goddess of the Moon is not insane to partner the Alpha with a...poor orphan like her." I think it was Joy who said that.
I certainly did not respond to all of their allegations. I had no bad intentions earlier. I just want to stand up and fight for what is right. I just want to protect Joan because she reminds me of Shena.
"Amara..." I was eating when I was interrupted. I was surprised to see Joan.
"Joan!" I exclaimed. She bowed, clearly embarrassed. Joan is petite but tall. I am aware that she is also older than me. I recently discovered that I am the youngest housekeeper here. I'm only seventeen, and nearly all of them are in their twenties.
"T-Thank you for your help earlier. If you hadn't been there...perhaps now I'd be one of those being punished in the cell," Joan said earnestly.
I reached for her hands and smiled at her. She looked up at me. "It's nothing, Joan. I just did what I think is right," I said. "It'd be fantastic if you were the Alpha King's Luna," she suddenly said, I stilled and only laughed it off. "It would be impossible, Joan," I said.
"You're only seventeen, right? If so, there's still hope! Your wolf can't recognize him because you're not yet eighteen, and the Alpha king can't either. He can't feel you yet because you're still not at the right age; perhaps this is why the Alpha King hasn't found his mate yet!" Joan's imagination got the best of her. I had no idea Joan had such a broad mind.
"It would be a great story to tell, but...I don't have any money to publish a book, Joan," I joked. She pouted.
"You don't believe it, do you?" she asked. "But believe me, I think you'll be a great queen," she added before our conversation ended. Joan's words left me speechless.
"Is Joan really twenty?" I kept asking Yna and Gina before we went to bed. They both laughed. "Why? Isn't it obvious?” Gina amusedly said.
“Well... she's..."
"Child-like?" Yna finished what I was about to say, and I nodded. They both laughed. "Well, you're right," they said with a shrug before falling asleep in their beds.
That night, I sighed and went to bed. Mrs. Clea's order was carried out the next day. Yna is now helping me clean the guest rooms. I couldn't help but wonder while cleaning, "Why did they suddenly want to clean the guest rooms? Is the palace expecting a visitor?" I asked Yna.
She turned to face me, surprised. "Haven't you heard yet?" she asked. I scowled. "What?" I was puzzled.
"There's an event coming up next week, I believe it was a ball or a party. Some of the great empires or kingdoms will visit the palace, including Pack clans from various kingdoms," she explained. I had no idea there was going to be such a big event.
“Why? Is there something to celebrate?” I inquired intrigued, she shrugged, "I'm not sure. However, rumors say that the event's purpose is to find the rightful mate for the Alpha King," she explained.
And then it will be held the following week? My birthday is also next week. My third birthday that will be spent without Shena.
"Are you all right, Amara?" she inquired when she noticed my silence. I nodded quickly.
We were cleaning the guest room when the door unexpectedly opened, revealing Gina, who was gasping for air. "Amara!" she exclaimed as she spoke, exhaling deeply. "What?" I inquired, surprised. Why does she appear rushed and exhausted?
"The Alpha King...wants you to serve his lunch, Amara!" she said, my eyes widened. My heart pounded, and I felt as if all of my strength had been drained.
"W-What?" I was so stunned and shocked.
