Chapter 17: Chapter 17

"Walter, I need to talk to you and I want you to listen very carefully." Serena started, in a serious tone.

Walter looked taken back with her statement.

"Why do you look so serious? Is there something wrong?"

Serena pulled out the blue velvet box fr her bag, and gave it to him.

"I can't marry you, Walter. I'll just make your life difficult, and I can't make you happy."

Walter wasn't able to speak for a couple of seconds, and it was obvious that he was shocked by Elizabeth's sudden decision to break off their engagement.

"Did I do something wrong? I'm sorry if I hurt you in any way---!"

"No, you didn't do anything wrong! You're the most loving, adorable, and most honest man I've ever met, and because of that, I don't deserve you...." Serena felt that she's not the one who's talking now, but it was Elizabeth.

"I'm finding it hard to understand and accept this... Maybe you're feeling pressured now? Or you might be having a cold feet---we can delay the wedding for a few more months if you want..." Walter stated, and he's now looking desperate.

"We can't do anything to fix this. Please don't make it difficult for us."

Walter became teary-eyed, and Serena knew that he was just trying to control his emotions. She felt so sorry for him.

"But how about our baby?"

Serena already anticipated this question from him. She wished that she will never use her final plan, but she doesn't have any choice now.

She looked at him straight into his eyes and spoke in a clear voice...

"The baby's...gone."

"W-What do you m-mean?"

"You know what I mean, Walter."

Walter looked at her in utter shock.

"Why did you...?" his voice faltered, and he was stupified by his fiancée's confession.

Serena's heart is breaking for this man, but this is what Elizabeth wanted, and it's the appropriate thing to do. She doesn't want to change the past, and this is the only way for her to go back to her own timeline.

"So, would you still want to marry a woman like me?'

Walter wasn't able to answer. He was just staring at her as if she was possessed.

Without a word, Serena walked towards the table and laid down the blue velvet box with the blue sapphire necklace inside.

Then, he walked out from Walter, and she didn't dare to look back...

********************

Serena's been staring at the mirror for quite a long time already. She finally finished all of her mission, but she still feels sad for Walter.  She didn't hear anything from Liam after their last talk, and she was able to retain Elizabeth and Katherine's friendship.

So,what's next? How can she go back to her own year?

She's been emotionally drained with all of the recent events that happened, and she's more exhausted than ever. Maybe she needs to take a rest for her to regain her energy and have a clearer mind the next day...
