Chapter 72: Chapter 72
**Cassie’s POV**
I am on my way to Derek's company. I know; I am excited too. It has been a long time since I went to that tall building where I started my new life as a werewolf hiding her identity as a human and a simple secretary.
My life is not as eventful as it was when I was still living with the pack. Human life is not a fairytale with lots of happiness, surely, but one thing is for sure... It is not as bloody and dangerous compared to the life we had living and fighting for the territory.
I am not saying that I entirely hate that life. It is a werewolf instinct to live and enjoy the life of hunting as the predator of the forest, and I did not and will never regret living that life. My memories with Kaiden are forever in my heart.
The taxi car stopped, and I went directly to the building. I am so glad that they can still remember me. That is something to be happy about because they are all still greeting me like I am the same old secretary to the CEO.
I went inside the elevator, and inside, a woman was wearing a familiar uniform. I realize that maybe this is the secretary for Derek.
"Hi, are you the new secretary of Derek?" I asked her with a smile on my face, but I received a grunt, and she was not happy to see me. Did I say something wrong?
"Yes, and why?" Wow, she is so rude.
"Ah, nothing," I said, stuttering because I could not believe how poor this woman's manner was. She cannot even hide her disgust at seeing me.
"Why are you even here?" She asked like she was so irritated. I did not even know her name, so why is she acting like this?
"What is wrong with you?" I finally snapped out
She smiled hideously; she bit her lips while looking at me up and down, gazing at me with those judging glares.
"It so happened that I should be the secretary if not for Angel, who recruited you for the position that is supposed to be mine. But thankfully, both of you are out of my way. Mr. Derek is mine," she said like a son of a...
When I heard that she was claiming Derek as her possession, I felt blood rushing through my veins. I had never been this angry with a human; I wanted to rip her head off, but I gave her a good beating first.
"What did you say?" I asked her. She might regret answering me the wrong way. This elevator ride is taking too long!
"I said, he is mine alone, and if you came back to seduce and leech the CEO, I am warning you not to mess up with me, or I will make you taste what hell is." She suddenly grabbed my hair.
But clearly, this woman has no idea who she is making war with. I twisted her arm enough to make him tremble in pain.
"Ouch! What are you doing? You monster! Let me go!" She shouted, and I heavily let her arms go.
"You better stop annoying me, or else..." I warn her with my incomplete words.
"We are not yet done," she warned me. I stepped outside of the elevator, and to our surprise, Derek was waiting for us... or maybe for me.
The secretary began to act like she was a puppy being beaten and bullied. She showed her semi-injured arms to her boss.
"Sir! This woman did this to me!" She said she was acting like a kid, and she is so mindless that what she did made her look like a completely stupid fool. What a shame.
Derek looks at her with a glare. "She will never do that without a reason. Tell me, Ms. White, what have you done?" He asked with danger in his voice.
"Sir... Excuse me, sir. The secretary hurriedly left the place, and I bet she went back to her table. What a complete mess!
"That is why I want you back to be my secretary." She is constantly flirting with me, but she is the only person I think can handle the rest of the work, but she has this attitude," he said with a regret in his tone.
"I am fine; don't mind me at all." Well, I did the wrong thing by physically hurting her, but she is still wrong. She just pressed the wrong button by pissing me off.
We went inside his office to discuss the project plan. Don't ask me where my boss is, because that vampire is maybe resting in his coffin or spending his precious time with his mate.
As I am saying, I should be talking about work, but this guy never let me go and constantly hugged me so tight.
"How can we finish this?" I asked him. He is clingy, and is he even a werewolf too? He is always sniffing me.
"Just let me have my rest; you are charging me, and you put me on rest," he said like he was so sleepy. This guy...
Suddenly, someone knocked on the door, and I was so shocked and embarrassed that maybe I pushed this guy away. I am so sorry!
"Mr. Derek! Your secretary is dead already," he said. The guy looks horrified by the news, and even I am shocked by what he said. That rude lady is dead. How?
We hurriedly went to the restroom, and if I am not used to some gruesome things like this, I might be vomiting nonstop right at this moment.
The lady looks tortured by some animals. Broken bones and blood are flowing on the white floor of the restroom. Her eyes are still open, and based on her last facial expressions, she died most painfully. Whoever made this, she or he is certainly a devil.
"I knew this would happen, but this is too much," he said.
"What is that? Do you know who is behind this?" I asked him.
"Someone is doing this like a serial killer. That person is killing whoever I talk with, and as frequently as once a week," he said, and I know he is really scared.
"This is something that a human cannot do," I said while we were leaving the crime scene. I can feel the eerie atmosphere, and I am not foolish not to see the fear of employees.
"I should not ignore the signs, and I thought all of these were coincidences, but this is all plot, but how? The security measure is doubled. I cannot see any reason not to capture the murderer." True, unless this is not executed by ordinary means by an ordinary person. This is more likely the work of a creature lurking in the dark.
But I cannot say this directly to Derek. I can see that he is trying his best not to be scared, but he is. He is trembling; this is not normal.
"What are the things you ignored?" He mentioned it a while ago.
We went to his office after he gave his statement to the officer. The CCTV footage was all destroyed like magic. Right, magic! Of course! If vampires and werewolves do exist, magical creatures like witches and such also live in this world of clueless humans.
"Two weeks ago, I tried to see other girls just to forget you, but of course, that was a failed attempt." It sounds like I don't like where this conversation will go.
"Seriously?" I said, half annoyed at what he said.
His eyes widened, and it looks like he is not fearing for his life, as he should! One last mistake, and I can easily do the same thing we saw on the crime scene. Just kidding.
"Give the whole context or else," I said with a warning tone to him.
He gulped before continuing. "As I said, I went to blind dates and bars. Though I swear I never had sex with them, I can't even make my thing hard. But that is not the point; the point is that both of them were found dead the next day, and the cause of death was the same," he said. A serial killer or an obsessed stalker that is not a human!
"I am worried, Cassie. I am, because what if his or her new target will be you?" If that will be happening, then too bad because I can snap their neck. We are creatures with a highly magical defense. Remember the origin of vampires? They are either made by devils or witches, both using dark magic. And we are creatures of the moon, blessed by the goddess.
I gave him a reassuring smile. "I can manage; trust me." Now I am wondering if I should or should not tell him about the real me.
I am more worried that he will find out that I am not a human, and what will be his reaction? Will he start to hate me and avoid me now?
But I don't want to overthink such a matter. There is a bigger problem here, and I will not stay silent or passive. I will do something about this.
I came back to the office, and I invited Derek to stay at my house for a while. No matter how secure his house is with modern security, it is not and will never be enough to be safe against darkness.
"DALE," I mentioned his name. He is smiling, but I can tell that he is also serious.
"I know; I heard the news. Someone broke the treaty," he said while his smile slowly faded away.
"What treaty are you talking about?" I asked him out of curiosity.
"Well, do you think that we are the only creatures living here in Claybourne City? Of course not! We are many, plenty, like those in the dark corners, disguising as humans, blending into society, hiding from hunters to survive or to hunt. A treaty is where the community promises not to kill humans here without a permit, and someone did it." I never knew such a thing existed.
"Then, is this a serial killer? That demon is stalking my ex-boss." Such a struggle.
"Do you mean your lover?" Now he manages to tease me.
"Stop joking around; this is more of a serious matter, please," I said to him. This is a matter of life and death.
Dale smiled. "I know, I know. Derek is not just a client but also a valuable friend. I will not let him be harmed," he mentions while drinking some wine.
"He is staying at my apartment for the moment; my brother and dad are there, and my place has a strong barrier against those creatures," I said.
"Of course, you are a werewolf, with enough understanding of how to be almost immune to magic." I am at least confident that I can manage to protect Derek.
If I failed to protect Kaiden before when I was in my weakest state, then I will never repeat the same damn mistake twice. I will do anything in my power to protect those I treasure.
It is dark outside when I am walking home. I can sense that someone is stalking me, and he or she surely has the intent to harm me.
That person is at my back and ready to attack me, but I manage to catch her arms, and yes, it is a she.
She looks like what I imagine. White hair, an old face, a disgusting smell, sharp teeth, and dark magic
"I see, not a human this time," she said, laughing like a demonic sound.
"You are dead," I warned her. She managed to kick me, and I flew into a nearby trash can. No one is here; she is using magic to separate us in a dimension that she made.
"In your dreams! Derek is mine, only mine!" she said, and now I see another obsessed bitch.
She started to move forward while using a wand to stab me, but it had no effect on me at all.
"What, why?" she said in disbelief. She is fighting the wrong opponent this time. I grabbed her neck, and slowly she turned into ashes.
