Chapter 82: Chapter 82

Married to Mr. Arrogant

Subtitle: Getting to know him

Written by : Marvy Hyacinth

... Later that day ...

"Doctor, how's he?" Steve asked as soon as the doctor came out of the Emergency Room.

The Doctor stared at him for a second before nodding his head and sighing at the same time.

"See me in my office please."

Steve looked at Roseau and back at the Doctor. He was almost sure this incident turned out very serious.

"Alright." He replied, dragging his feet behind the Doctor as the latter walked between hospital walls and corridors before reaching his office.

"Have your seat please."

The Doctor ushered Steve a chair while he took off his white coat and hanged it on the coat hanger.

"So, tell me Doctor, how is my son?" Steve asked as he watched the Doctor sit.

"Yes, so, actually he's barely alive if I must be honest with you."

The Doctor started.

"What? What do you mean by that?"

"Apparently, his neck is slightly broken and he broke a couple of bones in his body along with that, although they're not that serious, accompanied by a dangerous sprain of his ankle. He also has an internal bleeding, although we stopped the blood from clotting inside his head earlier, he still needs serious medical attention." The Doctor diagnosed.

Steve started panicking.

" What do you mean not serious? All those sounded terrible. "

" You have to calm down, Mr. Hardey. Just trust me, the only thing serious that could pose a threat to his life is the side of the Atlas vertebrae that got broken in his neck. "

" Can that be fixed? "

" Yes. Yes it can, but any mistake could cost him the ability to turn his neck sideways. "

The Doctor broke.

" I'll pay any amount, just make sure the surgery is carried out successfully. I'm sure you know me, I've been in the news couple of times, money is not going to be the issue here. "

" Then trust that we'll try our best as medical helps. "

Steve looked down as if in thoughts.

" I hope you do."

Then suddenly, he looked up with a glare in his eyes.

"If you don't, I'll make sure to sue you and this hospital."

The Doctor gave a nervous laugh.

" It hasn't come to that sir. There's a question I have to ask though. "

" Which is?"

" How did he fall from such a height?" The Doctor quizzed.

Steve furrowed his brows.

" Fall from what height? "

"Your son must have fallen from a great height to have broken a part of the Atlas vertebrae in his neck. You didn't know? "

Steve's face darkened.

" Mr. Hardey?" The Doctor called to be sure he was alright.

Steve looked up at the Doctor and faked a smile.

"Of course I knew that. Can I leave now?"

" Sure. Just make sure to sign the document one of the nurses will bring to you and pay in a deposit of the surgery fee. Once you sign and pay, I'll start the surgery right away."

Steve stood up.

" How much is the surgery fee?"

"I don't know about that. Just go to the desk on the first floor, someone will attend to you. I'll phone the front desk before you get there so you'll be attended to fast."

"Sure. Remember what I said, make sure my son gets better after this, and on no occasion should any complications that'd pose a threat to his life arise, because if it does..."

Steve broke off the rest of his sentence, sending a bad aura to the Doctor.

" I understand, sir." The Doctor replied and with that, Steve left the Doctor's office.

Steve's POV

I walked back to where my wife was, waiting for me and immediately I saw her browsing through her phone happily, rage filled me.

Why on earth would she hide the fact that Justin fell from a height, which was probably the staircase because that's the highest thing possible from which Julian could fall off and land in the position that I had found him.

I wonder how he could have fallen from the stairs, how could he have...

Oh wait!

Now it finally makes sense.

Julian wasn't home by the time I got to Justin.

Roseau didn't give me the details of what happened. She didn't even know to phone the ambulance or the police for help.

Was it because...?

Oh no!

I hope it isn't what I'm thinking, because if it is, I swear I'm not going to let it slide, not even if my father asks me to.

I got to Roseau's side and when she noticed me, she put away her phone and put on a straight face.

I watched as her lips moved, forming words that constructed into a sentence.

"What did the Doctor say?"

"We have to go pay for the bills and sign a surgery form."

"What? Surgery? Is it that bad?" She asked, her eyes reading shock, but at this moment, I couldn't really trust her.

It could be just an act to cover up Julian's misdeed. She never used to condone Julian's misdeeds, but as time passed, she changed slightly - once a mother, always a mother indeed.

"You don't know if it was bad or not? You were there, you were with Justin even before I got there, so how can you ask me that?"

" Are you referring to me?" Roseau asked, probably trying to doubt her ears.

" Yes. So? "

Roseau's pupils dilated.

" Don't you dare speak to me that way. I'm not some pauper you can boss around, you married me rich, I was a rich bride, so you will give me the respect I deserve. "

Steve took in breaths.

" I don't have time for this yet. Justin's life is more deserving."

With that, Steve turned around and went back to the place that ushered him in here in the first place.

He got to the first floor in a rush, went to the front desk and the nurse the Doctor had phoned on his behalf was already there waiting for him.

He paid for everything in full and signed the paperwork for Justin's surgery. Immediately he dropped the pen, the nurse left immediately with the document he signed.

He followed her back all the way towards the Emergency Room where Justin was still receiving initial treatments to keep him alive.

Soon, as he stood there, he saw the nurses carrying Justin out of the ER in a stretcher.

As they ran down the hall, rolling the stretcher with them, Justin on it, an oxygen mask enclosing half of his face, Steve knew they were on their way to the surgery theatre.

He followed after them, and paused a while to look at Roseau who was only sitting with a bored expression on her face.

"Aren't you coming?"

"No. I'll come down there in a bit, just not now."

Steve could not argue much as the train of nurses with Justin was fast disappearing from his sight as they went in some corners.

"Have it your way."

He ran towards the train and soon, he caught up with them. He held a part of the stretcher for support and looked at Justin. He looked fine on the outside, but indeed, Doctors were scary.

How could that Doctor have said such horrible things about him when Justin had not even a stain of blood on his body? Steve strained his eyes to check which of Justin's ankles was sprained, but it was almost invisible as well.

The body was one great structure to be thankful for, but at the same time, it was as fragile as tempered glass. The Doctor had diagnosed a bunch of things wrong in Justin's body, but he couldn't see any, apart from a big scratch on his forehead.

"Sorry, you can't come in here."

Steve looked up as that seemed to jolt him back to reality.

"What?"

"Only specialized medical experts are allowed in here." The nurse continued speaking.

"But.."

"Please take a seat and allow us do our job please."

The nurse cut him off, wasting no time before going into the huge door in front of her.

Steve trailed his eyes from the bottom all the way to the top of the door and saw a huge sign hung right above the door.

"Operation Theatre." He read aloud.

He wasn't sure if he was to be sad because of the situation Justin was in, or if he was to be happy that this was the furthest his father had come close to get rid of Justin.

"Oh geez."

Steve sighed. He wasn't to be thinking such thoughts, what if it truly happened in reality? What was he to do then?

He staggered slightly and fell on an iron chair not too far away from the operation Theatre.

Running his hand over his head, he sighed, not in relief and not in regret either.

He was just in between - afterall, before he was a father to Justin, he had the responsibility that came with being a father to Julian first!
