Chapter 48: Chapter 48
Karen's POV
I watched in shock as the doctors and nurses took his lifeless body into the operating theater, my heart beating rapidly.
"How's he?" I asked a nurse who came out of the operating theater, she ignored him and entered the doctor's office. I couldn't hear them but it appeared urgent, the doctor quickly came out of his office with her and they both ran into the operating theater and closed the door.
It was really confusing because I couldn't see anything there. The door was covered inside with a curtain. "Karen," I heard a familiar voice and I turned to see my mom in tears. Running towards her, I hugged her and began crying. It was all my fault, none of this would have happened if I didn't deceive Brody.
"Mom, I'm a bad person." I murmured amidst tears.
She kissed my forehead and looked at me. "No, you're not a bad person, everything would be alright soon." She assured me but I couldn't be consoled. Tears flowed down my eyes freely as the image hit me, the image of Brody on the floor lifeless. "Mom, I hope he makes it alive."
"He will." She muttered.
She held me and we both went to the waiting room to sit down. "Mom, how did you know about this?" I inquired.
"It's all over the news," she answered and paused. "Billionaire's son falls down lifeless in Los Angeles." She mimicked the headline trying to make me smile but I couldn't even smile. I was really heartbroken.
A nurse walked inside. "Mrs Taylor," she called out and I stood up. Looking at her, I wondered why I got up as soon as I heard that name. Taylor was Brody's family name and since we got married, it became my name also. It was the first time someone called me that and I managed to smile after everything. "Some reporters from the press would like to see you." She announced gently and my heart skipped a beat.
I definitely could not handle all the questions and attention. I was a person who wanted a low and private life. Could I do this for Brody? "My daughter is uneducated, there's no way she can speak to the press." Mom told the nurse and I shook my head.
No, this was not right. Looking at the nurse, I replied. "I'll speak to them."
The nurse smiled at me. "Alright, they would be in this room in five minutes. If you're done answering their questions, you can press the button in the corner and they'll leave." She said.
I nodded and watched her leave. "Are you crazy?" My mom asked me as soon as I turned to look at her.
"I'm not, Brody's family must be worried right now because they must have heard the news. I don't want them to be worried."
Mom shook her head and held me. "What are you going to tell the public? Will you tell them that it was a contract?" Mom asked, obviously annoyed and irritated.
"Mom, if you were Brody's mom, won't you want your son's wife to speak up for your son?" I asked her and she became quiet. "I'm the reason Brody's on that hospital bed fighting for his life."
The door was pushed open and the reporters ran inside the room with their cameramen. I stole a glance at my mom, she seemed worried too because she knew that I hated a social life. The first question sent a shiver down my spine. "Mrs Taylor, what made Brody faint?" One of the female reporters as the cameras were focused on me.
I cleared my throat and faked a smile even though tears were in my eyes. "He had a slight headache, there's nothing more to it."
Another reporter asked. "Why is he in Los Angeles with you?"
I wondered if that question was important. "We came for our honeymoon, I suggested to him that Los Angeles was a perfect city to have fun." I lied.
Did they believe my lie? I couldn't even ask myself some questions. It was all my fault. I broke down in tears. "Do you think your husband is suffering from an illness?" The reporter asked and my heart raced. I had never thought of that, Brody looked perfectly alright.
"Like I said earlier, he had a headache and fainted. He was just stressed up and nothing more." I replied.
As soon as I realized they were not done with the questions, I pressed the button on the wall and they all sighed and left with sadness written all over their faces. I couldn't keep on lying to them when I knew that everything happened because of me.
"You did great." Mom said and I turned to look at her.
I faked a smile and we walked out of the waiting room. My mind drifted back to Brody, I hope he was already conscious. "Mom, what do you think?" I asked her as we walked back to the operating theater. We stood outside, waiting for the doctors and nurses to come out.
"I don't know, I'm just as confused as you are. I wished you listened to my advice at first. This would not have happened." She reprimanded me.
I nodded, my eyes full of tears as I listened to her. She was definitely right, Brody would not be on that hospital bed if I had listened to her.
One of the nurses came out from the operating theater and looked at me. "The doctor needs to speak with one of his family members." She said.
"I'm his wife." I told her and she smiled.
"Please, wait in the doctor's office, he would be with you in less than a minute." She replied and I smiled at my mom before walking into the doctor's office and slammed the door gently.
I pulled out a chair and sat down waiting for him, it was my dream of becoming a doctor but I had to leave school because my parents couldn't cope. It required a lot of money to attend a medical school and my dad discouraged me.
The door opened and the doctor walked in. "You're his wife, right?" He asked me, closing the door behind him.
I nodded and stood up. "Your husband has kidney failure." He revealed and my heart skipped a beat.
"Is he going to make it?" I asked and closed my eyes. I didn't want to hear something that would break my heart.
"He has a slim chance of staying alive." He answered.
