Chapter 88: Chapter 88

Aleta snorted in annoyance. She folded her arms across her chest. "What?" she challenged.

"What do you've got to say in your defense?" Aleta pointed at Davina, who was now suppressing her anger half-dead so as not to explode.

Davina tightened her grip on the paperbag she was carrying. She couldn't reply to this middle-aged woman in front of her. Especially since Danas' eyes had signaled her not to reply to the words of her in-laws. Making Davina in the end only silent.

Seeing that, Aleta also chuckled. She smiled wryly with a very obvious cynical look. Aleta also turned her face in another direction. Reluctant to look at Davina or Danas for long.

"I just know that my kind-hearted son is not lucky enough to have friends who stab her in the back like you guys," Aleta scolded with a very piercing sentence as she walked out of the room.

Hearing the harsh words that came out of Aleta's mouth, made Davina who had struggled to hold back her anger finally raised her face and intended to reply to the sharp words. However, again Danas held herself back.

It wasn't until the door to the hospital room was firmly closed that Davina growled in annoyance as she released Danas' hand grip on her wrist.

"You-" Davina pointed at Danas. She was at a loss for words. The woman pulled back her index finger and clenched her fist.

"How dare you hold me down? Argh! Danas please come to your senses!" growled Davina. Her tone was rising. She pushed her bangs back.

"Do you think your mother-in-law's treatment is normal? Huh? Tell me Danas what you're thinking right now. Why are you silent about being treated like that. Even if you dare not express it," Davina pointed at her chest. "Me, Danas. I will face her. I will tell her the truth."

Davina stared at Danas in disbelief. "I was going to say that, but you held me back again?"

Davina placed the food she had brought on the nightstand beside Danas' bed. She shook her head and looked at Danas who looked down limply. As if she had no power to defend herself.

"Until when are you going to keep quiet like this? Huh?" Davina exclaimed in annoyance.

"Do you think they'll believe it?" Danas snapped. She tilted her face towards her best friend.

Her eyes looked frustrated. Davina didn't budge. Danas managed to silence her with just that look. Danas bit her lower lip.

"Melvin has that video. The video where it was clearly seen that I was the one holding the glass bottle that stabbed Amaira. Do you think Melvin and her mama will believe that I'm not the killer when they have a video like that?"

Danas raised both eyebrows, she threw a question that was difficult for Davina to answer. Seeing her best friend who no longer gave a word, made Danas exhale harshly. She rubbed her pale face with one hand that was free from the IV injection. Danas dropped her gaze on the hand that was attached to the IV. Then on to her stomach, where her child was still growing and developing inside.

"We can tell the truth if your position was to remove the bottle that was stuck in Amaira's stomach, not the one that stabbed her."

Danas brought her free right hand to touch her stomach. She shook her head at her best friend's suggestion. "Are you sure they'll believe what we say?"

Danas smiled bitterly.

"It'll be hard to convince them, when what they hear doesn't match the evidence they have. With what they see."

Danas lifted his chin. Returning Davina's gaze. "That's very difficult. They still won't believe us, Dav."

Davina swallowed her saliva with difficulty. She bit her lower lip anxiously. She used one hand to adjust the hair that was blocking her eyes. Then she looked away, unable to look at Danas' helpless face.

"At least we can try to find evidence of your innocence. At least we can try one more time, that's all I ask, Dan." This time Davina's tone lowered.

She became unsure of what she had voiced earlier. Was there really no way for her best friend to be free from the accusation? Davina really couldn't stand to see the injustice in front of her eyes. Even the most painful thing for Davina right now was the fact that she could not help anything for her best friend's problem.

Danas was silent as he gently stroked his stomach. Davina understood. There are many things that Danas is considering right now. And Davina should not force her best friend.

The sound of the door opening followed by a baritone voice broke the silence.

"I agree with Davina's request," he said matter-of-factly. The echoing of his steps made the two women focus their eyes on the man who had just joined their conversation.

"Jagad," Davina muttered. "When did you hear our conversation?" asked Davina. She didn't expect that their conversation would be heard by other people outside the room.

Davina held her lips. She felt sorry for not controlling the volume of her voice. Fortunately, the one who heard her conversation with Danas was Jagad, not their enemy.

Jagad shrugged his shoulders casually. "You yelled at Danas to defend your argument, that's why."

Davina grimaced. She rubbed her nape feeling bad.

Jagad who saw that just shook his head. "You really have to change your habit of always having a high volume when you're arguing with your interlocutor, especially in a hospital. You're lucky none of the patients from the other rooms complained about your high-pitched voice." There was a joking tone to Jagad's sentence.

Davina spluttered her mouth. "My voice is not that loud, bro. Don't make it up," Davina protested.

Jagad smiled. Then he turned to Danas who was now looking back at him. "Danas, I meant what I just said."

Jagad brought up the topic of the previous conversation again. Earlier, when Jagad was planning to see Danas' condition, he accidentally saw Melvin's mother coming out of Danas' room with a sour face. Not only that, even the stomping of the woman's heels echoed along the hospital corridor. Anyone who saw it would immediately be able to guess that the middle-aged woman was not in a good mood.

Jagad immediately walked quickly to Danas' room. He was worried that something had happened to the woman. But his steps stopped when he heard the voice of his younger brother who was arguing with Danas. In the end, he agreed with his sister's words. Jagad ventured inside and interrupted their conversation.

Danas now looked at Jagad with an incredulous look. She thought Jagad would be mature. "I've even let myself be treated like this. I don't think we need to trouble ourselves anymore. The case is closed anyway, it would be very difficult to reveal the truth at this point."

Danas still continued to reject the opinions of Jagad and Davina.

"I will help you, Danas. Davina and I are ready to help you. You are not alone. We just have to try anyway. Everything will seem impossible if we don't try, right?" Jagad persuaded.

"It's not about how your life will be in the future. It's not about whether you'll live comfortably or be tormented by the accusation. But it's all about your child too. Do you've the heart to have a child called a murderer's son?"

Jagad's last sentence was able to make Danas' defense waver. It made Danas' resolve not to reopen the case fail as well. The woman fell silent.

Jagad's words had a point. Danas couldn't be selfish and feel okay about getting the nickname. She must think about her child later. How her child would grow up and be known as a child born from the womb of a murderer. Danas couldn't imagine how painful her child would be.

Danas lowered her face. She closed her eyes and reassured herself that her decision was the right one. She was doing this for the sake of her child. Danas continued to recite that until his head slowly nodded.

"You're right," said Danas. Her eyelids slowly opened. Her hands held her stomach. "My son cannot have a murderous mother," Danas continued.

Then she looked up. Her brown irises looked at Jagad and Davina in turn.

"Let's open this case again to prove that I'm not the killer. I need your help to make my future child not bear the pain I'm feeling right now."

Hearing that, Davina smiled. She immediately approached Danas and held her friend's hand tightly.

"I will help you, Danas. Let's prove to everyone that you're not the killer."
