Chapter 192: Chapter 192
Having the thought that Boss B and Blake are not to be bothered at the moment, Donde had to hold himself back from dialing their number. It did not cross his mind to contact Jack Foster. Or maybe, the whole idea of being on a mission is something that created a subconscious barrier in his mind to just wait until any one of them gets back or make the call to check on how things were doing on his side.
And that long-awaited call came today.
“Hello?” Donde answered the call that came through the store phone line.
At first, he thought it was just another customer. Some of their neighbors would call to get their things ready, so they will just have to pay and grab their items when they are in a hurry because Donde would already prepare them if he is not busy with other walk-in customers.
“Who came to get Charles out of the building?” Jack asked as soon as the line got connected.
He did not beat around the bush. Checking the security footage, he realized this incident happened a few days ago already. And no matter how hard he tried to recognize the people in medical scrub suits that came with an ambulance, Jack could not get a decent identity with their faces half-covered with surgical masks, and as if they knew where the lenses of the cameras were, the medical crew seemed to have avoided being captured with a clear view.
“I don’t have any idea. I wanted to call Blake first when he asked for my phone as he said he was going to make a phone call, but Boss Charles said Boss B, Blake, and the team were on a mission. He said I shouldn’t bother any of them as my call may cause someone to lose a life or end like him, injured and useless,” Donde explained eagerly.
Jack sighed. He was furious, but Donde did not know anything. Knowing how Charles Anderson can be manipulative, Jack shouldn’t be surprised how he got into Donde’s weakness and achieved whatever he wanted to do. And that was to escape, to leave the safe house where he must have felt like he was imprisoned. Brianna shot him in the chest, almost fatal, with an inch distance from his heart. Charles Anderson must have feared to see Brianna return and finish him in no time.
Besides, they did not give the memo for Donde never to let Charles make any phone call to anyone. Adding to their mistakes, they did not give so much concern about Charles’ recovery. They never thought he would have someone to run to, even in his ugly predicament. He would have been useless to anyone, after all.
“You said Charles used your phone to make the call, right?” Jack asked.
“Yes.”
“Do you still have the dialed history for me to check who he made the call to?”
“I will send you a screenshot of all the dialed history on my mobile phone if that would be of help,” Donde clipped the telephone receiver between his shoulder and jaw to make use of his hands in swiping his smartphone unit. “There, I sent them to you. I also asked the crew where they were taking the Boss before the vehicle left, but the guy just glanced at me. He did not say anything and drove away. I took a note of the ambulance’s plate number. That was the only thing I could do. I’m sorry, Jack….” Donde apologized sincerely.
“Good, good!” Jack praised Donde for thinking about jotting down the car number. However, he was not hoping so much from it. Whoever came to pick up Charles would probably be wise not to leave any traces knowing Brianna and her team might be after them. “Send me everything you think would be useful. If you can draw a picture of what they looked like up close, that might also be helpful because the surveillance cameras are far and they had surgical masks. II cannot make a clear identification of who they are. If you heard any one of them speak, or any distinguishing behavior or anything that caught your attention, and I mean anything at all, you have to tell me, alright?”
“Is anything wrong?” Donde asked with fear. “Did I cause you guys any trouble?”
“No, it’s not your fault. But we might have to find out who is behind this series of attacks against Brianna and her team. B’s place almost got invaded, although they all failed. At the same time, Blake and the team got ambushed while on their way to back up B. Whoever got Charles might be the same person or group doing all of this,” Jack did not hesitate to share the information with Donde.
Not because Jack Foster was hundred percent sure of Donde’s loyalty, but he was trying to feed information in case he was a mole. And if not, nothing will change the way they treat each other, but if yes, Donde will get to know that no one dares to bump into a barb-wired wall without getting hurt.
Jack was recording their conversation on his side of the line to make sure he did not miss anything. Jack was thinking about replaying this conversation later to check if Donde’s voice and tone would tell if he was on their side or not.
“I don’t think the Boss was taken against his will. He even made the call, remember?” Donde frowned as he tried to recall.
“Did they appear familiar with each other, or was Charles familiar with any of the people who came to take him?” Jack casually asked.
“Not really. No one of them spoke, not even simply hi and hello,” Donde stated.
“I see, thanks, Don. Let me know if you notice anything out of the ordinary around you, okay?” Jack said as he was about to cut their conversation.
“Hey, man!” Donde blurted.
“Hmmm?” Jack hummed as he waited for Donde to go on speaking.
“Please check on the security cameras here from your end once in a while, okay? I don’t know why but ever since the Boss left here, I am getting jumpy for nothing really to bother about,” Donde said as he looked right into the lens of the camera closest to his spot. He was thinking Jack would be there on the monitor looking right into him. “I am afraid to wake up dead one day.”
Donde chuckled, but his face paled and clearly showed worry and trepidation.
“Your speed dial is still the same, right?” Jack asked.
“Of course, I will never change that in my lifetime….” Donde answered firmly.
“Then don’t worry too much. Get a good grip on yourself and stay calm. That is the only way for you to respond accordingly when things go south for you and threaten your safety,” Jack advised Donde. “And just to add peace to your mind, She will never ignore your emergency call whatever she is doing and wherever she may be as long as she is alive. She may not get to you personally, but I am sure she will send someone to assist you to safety.”
“Thanks! It indeed brought me peace of mind,” Donde nodded as he murmured emotionally.
“Don’t forget to send me everything that might help. I got to go now. Bye!”
Jack pressed a button to end the call, but he remained watching Donde’s every action. Soon after, Jack received a few messages from Donde, including the car’s plate number. Jack started to trace every information at hand.
Jack Foster checked the plate number, and just as he had thought, it wasn’t very useful. The ambulance was hi-jacked just a few blocks away from the safehouse. The real medic crew was tied and kept in the attacker’s car until their task was done, and Charles was moved from the ambulance to another van with a fake plate number. No wonder they did not care if their actions were captured by the surveillance cameras nearby and every route they took until they decided to lose whoever would be tracing their tracks.
And when Jack checked the call log on Donde’s phone, he was no longer surprised to find nothing. Of course, Charles Anderson had erased the number he dialed already.
Dead end for Jack Foster!
“Who could Charles call for help?” Jack asked, thinking aloud all by himself.
