Chapter 151: Chapter 151
The two, Brianna and Lucien, walked cautiously and stealthily. The dogs were calm, but they still had to be careful. The main door was not among the options of getting into the house, so Brianna led Lucien to the side of the house where a balcony was facing a garden with concrete railing wide enough for a pot to be placed on the corner pillars. It was easier to climb since there was somewhere to step their foot on as they grabbed hold and climbed up.
"Watch your steps, okay?" Brianna reminded Lucien in a hushed tone.
"Okay."
Lucien was determined to do as he said earlier. He did not speak when he wasn't asked. Even when he replied in response to her asking to remind her why he was here, he was ready to retort and say he just answered her question if she reacted differently to his answer. But as her next words were not something he needed to answer, he kept his mouth shut.
Brianna felt weird to hear this blabbering man suddenly become one-word responding, but she decided to ignore him. It wasn't the right time to ask if she wanted to know his reasons.
Soon they were inside the balcony. The sliding door was slightly open. Brianna expertly opened the door enough to get in.
But she paused.
"What?" Lucien whispered when he noticed Brianna being alert.
"This is not good," she whispered back. "You don't leave a door open like this. It's intentional."
Brianna checked the surroundings. Then she was about to leap off the railing, but Lucien grabbed her hands.
"Where are you going?" Lucien asked, barking in a low voice.
"I'll be right back. Just give me ten seconds," Brianna answered, tugging her hand off Lucien's hold, but the man tightened his grip.
"No! Stay here. We can ask Jack or anyone to check the movements of the people inside," Lucien insisted.
He was not willing to let her out of his sight, no matter what. Brianna, on the other hand, was not used to anyone questioning her actions, especially while on a mission, so she was taken aback. She was not fond of relying on everything to others. As long as she could handle things on her own, she would prefer to move by herself than ask or bother others. Teamwork is not supposed to be burdening; besides, speaking might also compromise her location or situation, so she would rather move in silence than ask for anything.
She was about to do as she wanted, but Jack had already heard their conversation. Everyone could actually hear the conversation between Brianna and Lucien ever since they arrived. While they were on the way, their communications were still off, so no one heard the conversation between the two. The car driving behind them only saw their car stop in the middle of the road, but nobody went out of the car and continued driving, so they also followed.
"There is no movement inside except in the study room. It's the room to the left from your position," Jack replied.
"That is even weirder," Brianna frowned as she stared at the open door. "You wait here, follow after three minutes," she ordered Lucien and did not wait for his response before she disappeared.
But Lucien was on her heels. He did not wait for even a minute before stepping into the same spot Anna went into, invading the house. Brianna frowned as she looked back, noticing he was right behind her.
"What did I tell you?" she groaned.
"I didn't hear you say anything," Lucien retorted. He was prepared to argue if she said she was going to check the safety before he could follow her inside. That was something he was not going to obey. He should check if the place were safe, not the other way around, but as she won't allow such, Lucien decided to walk in with her. "I am not going to let you out of my sight. I made myself clear with you from the start," he added.
His tone was too firm and serious that Brianna fell speechless. She was annoyed, but she was also helpless. She could not get totally annoyed to hurt this idiot by words or anything. She realized her patience was somehow being applied where she won't even bother giving it a thought applying. Annoyance was not something she was fond of tolerating. That is why no one dares to annoy her. But this man is unbelievably bold. And she is unbelievably tolerant.
She was about to say something, but she realized they were already close to the study room where Jack said they had some movements.
"Okay, fine! If you blow this one up, I am going to skin you alive and let ants eat your flesh while you scream in agony!" Brianna fiercely threatened him.
She was hoping her words would at least make this man back off because she was not sure how to react to his silly behavior. They were not excessive, but they were not usual to her. Realizing he is even more persistent when it involves her safety, Brianna did not know how to reprimand him. If it felt like underestimating her capabilities, it would have been easier for Brianna to handle, as pride would have taken over her, but she could feel it was not the case. Lucien seems to be aware Brianna could protect herself, but he was like a failsafe measure.
"I will help you find the most deadly ants, in case," Lucien nodded firmly as he stated.
"God! You're hopeless!" Brianna peeked inside the study room.
There was only the woman in a wheelchair. The very same woman she saw at lunch today.
"Please, come in," the woman turned her chair around to face Brianna. "I have been waiting for you. Again. I almost dozed off."
Brianna smiled as she leisurely leaned on the side of the door.
"Sorry to keep you waiting. I just had to make sure I wasn't walking into a trap," Brianna replied, still on her spot, casually looking around the room.
She could see no hidden camera even with her thoroughly keenly scanning eyes.
"There is none," the woman chuckled.
Only then did she walk into the room.
"Why did you have to do that?" Lucien complained as he walked behind Anna, coughing.
"Did what?" the woman on the wheelchair asked, frowning.
Lucien pouted as he looked at Brianna's back, obviously aggrieved.
"It's her. She choked me with a hand while she casually spoke to you," Lucien replied.
"You must have been too noisy to her liking," the lady nodded as she chuckled. She was entertained to see the young man pouting like he was robbed of his favorite toy by someone he could not fight back.
Then she looked at Brianna intently. After a while, she spoke gently.
"You are like the woman version of your dad. I am sure he is very proud of you," the lady uttered.
She had been watching from her monitor. She expected someone to find her, but it made her feel too tired to wait for almost all day. She is not young, after all. Adding to that fact, she was tied into a wheelchair. But she felt weird when her Dobermans turned quiet. She could see them awake but not behaving like they used to be. She sent her servants out to empty the house, in case she was found by the other party than the late Leith Peters' daughter. Being alone for her would be more efficient than having someone around she should worry about. She has her secret doors to hide herself, but even her servants do not know such parts of her house, and she wants it kept that way.
