Chapter 11: Chapter 11

~Akeyla’s POV~

Wondering how the party went? Don’t bother, just know that my dear best friend actually abandoned me at the party when she met her crush. I even got lost at the party searching for her. Only when she was done making out with her so-called crush did she come to find me. Trust me; I will never go to a party with her again.

“Will Brenda be coming over later?” My mom asked me as she walked into the sitting room where I sat on the sofa.

I turned to her and shook my head. “She has a tight schedule today. She has to do shoot for some business commercials.”

My mom nodded before she sat down beside me. “The life of a celebrity.”

I nodded in agreement. “She even met a few of her fans at the party and they were all asking for her autograph.”

My mom smiled, “Aww, how sweet.”

I nodded and rested my head against the sofa before I heaved a long sigh which made my mom turn to me.

“What’s the matter? Are you okay?” She asked me.

I smiled at her, “Of course I am okay mom.” That was a lie. I couldn’t stop thinking about what I would do if my company did not call me back. What if they decided to fire me and I become totally jobless?

“Are you still on a break?” My mom asked.

I gulped and looked away. I couldn’t bring myself to tell her that I was suspended at my place of work so I lied to her that my boss gave me a short break. How was I supposed to tell her something like that? It would make her very worried and bothered.

“Yes mom, I will um… I will be going back soon.”

She nodded, “That’s great. I also want to start doing something so I can be able to support you.”

I smiled as she said that but there was no way I was going to allow stress herself when she was sick.

“No no mom. I told you not to bother yourself, I can handle it. You need to be strong first. The doctor said you should stay away from anything that would trigger your illness.

My mom sighed, “I cannot just leave everything for you alone, and you know that.”

Of course, I knew she would say that. If I hadn’t been keeping a close eye on her, I am sure she would have started working herself out just to ensure she supported me. I would not allow her do that and not even when she recovers. She had gone through so much already and that even contributed to her illness.

“Just rest mom, I can handle it, its fine.”

She sighed and nodded her head. “Alright. So… when are you going to show me your boyfriend?” She asked changing the topic.

I placed my hand over my forehead as I heard her say that. I chuckled and shook my head; there she goes again. “Please stop mom. I don't have a boyfriend."

My mom smiled, "But why? You're too beautiful to be single Akeyla."

I smiled, my mom eh. "Thank you, mom, but I don't want to be in a relationship for now, men are scums." No guy should come at me for saying that but what could I say? All they did was lie and make fake promises that they would never keep. My ex was a very good example. After we dated for two years, I found out only two days to his wedding that he was getting married. Could you even imagine that? And when I confronted him about it, he told me that he was already betrothed to the girl from birth. I mean come on, what kind of sick lie was that? Anyways, that had already passed, I have moved passed that already.

My mom chuckled loudly and smiled broadly at me. "Oh baby, don't say that. Just because you dated guys that were scums doesn't mean all men are scums. There are still good men out there who would do anything for the women they love."

I shook my head, "You might be lucky to meet dad, mom but me... I am always unlucky when it comes to guys."

She sighed and reached for my hand. "Don't say that baby. All you need to do is to try and trust. I didn't know that I would end up with your father, I simply followed my heart and allowed myself to be free from my past. True love does exist, baby."

I stared at my mother and couldn't help but smile. “Dad did not lie to you mom.”

She smiled at me and shook her head, “And why do you think that?”

I narrowed my eyes, “Has he?” I shrugged my shoulders. “Well, he might have lied to you but not the same way those guys lied to me.”

She shook her head and moved closer to me. “What if I tell you that I started dating your father without knowing that he was married?”

My eyes widened in shock, “What? Mom are you serious?”

She smiled and stroked my hands. “Well… She sighed. “How should I put it? He was indeed married but his wife no was no longer living with him. They were already planning to divorce.”

I tilted my head as I grew more confused, “I don’t understand.”

She sighed, “He was already prepared to divorce her but she was adamant to sign the papers. She only moved out of the house and they lived separately.”

“So how did you find out about all that? Did dad tell you?” I asked her as I couldn’t believe something like that actually happened and she still ended up with dad. That must have really broken her heart.

“Well, we were already dating for about like…six months when this woman suddenly pooped out of nowhere claiming to be married to him. Henry…” She called dad’s name and sighed. “your father, he um… he tried to explain to me but what could I do but believe the woman when she showed me their wedding pictures and certificate?”

“So, what did you do? Did you leave him?”

She chuckled, “I wanted to but …well, I was heartbroken that he didn’t tell me, I wanted to leave but he kept begging me. He told me what really happened and…” She shrugged. “I decided to give him a chance. His wife really gave me a lot of trouble but they got divorced eventually. We were not talking to each other for quite a while and things were awkward for us.”

I nodded and sighed. “You and dad really had a long history together. At the end, you forgave him, right?”

My mom nodded. “Yes, I did because I love him.”

“Well, that was because dad loved you but it’s not the same with other men out there. That was then, now, the world has changed. Love is hard to find now.”

She smiled at me, “I pray you experience how it feels one day baby and you will see how wonderful it is.”

I nodded my head, “Yes, mom. Thank you.” Then, my phone started ringing and I turned to my side to pick it up. I glanced at the screen and smiled when Brenda’s name popped up.

“Hey girlfriend.” I smiled broadly.

“Keyla! Please…Please come over, I need your help!”

My smile disappeared as I heard her voice and I sprung up to my feet. She sounded like was in trouble because her voice sounded strained.

“Brenda, what’s wrong?” I asked with a worried voice.

“Please come over quick!”

“Brenda, what’s the problem? Why…” The line went dead. My eyes widened as I stared at the screen. I quickly turned around heading for the door but my mom stopped me.

“What’s the matter baby?”

I swallowed hard, “I don’t know mom but Brenda sounded like she was in trouble and just when I was asking her what the problem was, the line went dead. I… I have to go and see her.”

My mom stood up, “How bad is it? Will you be, okay? Should I…”

“Don’t worry mom, let me go and see what the problem is.” I quickly started running for the exit. I ran outside and went to stop a taxi before entering inside. What could be the problem? Was she hurt? Why did she sound like she was in pain?
