Chapter 3: Chapter 3
âI canât believe she actually likes someoneâ Chad laughed.
âGuess how I felt when she told meâ he made a face. âI always thought a girl who hates boys that much has to be gayâ.
âIs she too much to handle?â Chad asked.
âNo way. Annoying yes, but too much noâ.
âSo what did you do?â Chad asked.
âWhat I always do. Leave them speechlessâ.
âWho do you think the poor guy is?â Chad asked.
âProbably meâ he replied sure.
âWhat?â Chad asked.
âIt is really obvious. She telling me she likes someone and Iâll want to find out, spending time with her and thinking Iâll fall for herâ.
Chad was left speechless.
âWell I have to go find her. Wish me luckâ.
Kelly decided to head to the fields to read. Why would anyone want to read there? It was noisy and a lot of distractions, but she liked the scenery. The green grass, the brown tracks, and everyone just doing what they wanted to do.
It was beautiful and peaceful. She wished she could paint a picture.
âSup Kel!â Jason whispered suddenly.
âGah!â she yelled almost diving out of her chair.
âGah? Youâre hilariousâ he laughed sitting down heavily by her side.
âCan you go away?â
âDonât you get tired of that?â Jason asked with a smile.
âNo because I donât like you and Iâm pretty sure you donât like meâ.
âWho says so?â
âMeâ she replied removing her glasses.
He hadnât noticed her eyes before. They were a nice blue grey. It was nice. Really pretty. Too bad the person who had the eyes had a very ugly personality.
She irritated him so much and just made him want to do things she didnât want to do. She just made him so angry.
âWhy do you wear glasses anyway?â
âI canât see very well. The glasses corrects my sightâ.
âThought about contacts?â
âI donât want anything getting close to my eyeâ.
âIf you keep doing this, how do you expect the boy you like to notice you?â
She was silent.
âHave you thought about that?â
âI have actuallyâ she whispered.
âWhoa! You actually thought about a boy noticing you? I canât believe youâ he laughed.
âSuit yourselfâ she huffed standing up.
âWaitâŚ.â
âJason!â a girl yelled from the front.
He looked at Kelly and then to the girl at the front.
âCome hang out with usâ.
âWeâŚ.â
âYour fans are waitingâ Kelly said getting herself ready.
âI have somewhere to take you after school. Meet me at the parking lotâ.
Kelly just picked up her book and Jason made his way past her down the steps.
âWhat are you doing with her?â the leader of the three girls asked.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âSheâs just weirdâ another girl whispered.
âAnyway on to more important things. What are you doing this weekend?â
Jason looked up just in time to see Kellyâs back disappear from sight.
âIâm not doing anything, but something may come up and so I make no promisesâ.
âDonât treat a girl like that Jasonâ she whined.
Jason sat on the trunk of his car waiting for Kelly who was a no show. She didnât actually blow him off, did she? She wouldnât. A guy like him way out of her league, taking his time to talk to her when no one else would.
He saw her approach and he slapped a smile onto his face.
âHeyâ he waved.
âWhat is it?â she asked.
âI told you I have somewhere to take youâ.
âWhere?â she asked bluntly.
âItâs a surprise. You really know how to take the joy out of thingsâ he grumbled.
âThen let me just leave so I donât suck out the joyâ.
âDonât be like that. Please letâs just goâ.
âWell I am curiousâ she thought about it for a while and then she accepted it.
She got into the car and Jason drove. It was quiet. He didnât bring up conversation and she wasnât one to bring up conversation anyway.
Soon they arrived at what looked like an empty picnic spot up the hill.
âWhat are we doing here?â
âWell I like coming here sometimes. Itâs my quiet placeâ.
âSo you wanted to show me your quiet place, why?â
âIâm trying to do something nice, and itâs peacefulâ he said in an exasperated tone. âCan we just sit and talk?â
She didnât reply, but she led herself to a picnic table.
âSo we were talking about you thinking about a boyâ he smiled biting his lips.
She rolled her eyes. âYes we were and it doesnât matter. If he canât notice me when Iâm like this then thereâs no needâ.
âWhy would anyone notice you when you blend into the shadows? And you dress like a grandma and who have you seen attracted to grandma fashion?â
âIt doesnât help talking to youâ.
âWell maybe if you drop your hair, and remove your glasses, and change your fashion senseâŚ.â
âYou wouldnât look bad actually. You could maybe be prettyâ.
âIâm not changing anything for anyoneâ.
âSeriously why are you like that all the time? Always so like this? Annoyed and mean all the time. Crankyâ he finished.
âI am not cranky. I am myselfâ.
âTrust me when I say you need some dick in your lifeâ.
Kelly gawked. Her mouth wide open.
She came back to her senses. âDonât say such vulgar things!â
âIt is the truthâ he shrugged. âItâll change your life and make you less bitchyâ.
âItâs not the truth and I will very much like to change the topicâ.
A nice long dick. Maybe his own. He could just imagineâŚ.
He grimaced. No! No way. Why did he think about that? The girl was infecting him with her weirdness. Why did he even think about her in that way? Her and sex shouldnât go together.
âOkay letâs talk about something elseâ he agreed. For his own sanity.
âWhat do you want to know?â she asked placing both elbows on the table.
âWhatâs the deal with you? I can still remember you called yourself weird one timeâ.
âOh thatâ she said passing air through her closed lips and he just noticed how full and pink. âWell I really havenât talked to anyone since freshmen year, and then word started going round that Iâm proud, and then Iâm weird, and many more stories about me that I think sometimes I have a lookalike doing all that stuffâ.
âSo thatâs why people call you weird. Why donât you talk to people and tell them everything is a lieâ.
âI donât care about them at all. They can say what they want, I know the truthâ.
âWhy donât you talk to anyone?â
âI donât want to talk to anyone. They all rub me the wrong way. Iâve already explained this to you so stop asking me!â
âOkay, okay fineâ.
âGoodâ she sighed.
âSo tell me who you likeâ.
âBack to boys!â she yelled raising both arms up.
âSo are you going to tell me?â
âNoâ she replied.
âDo I know him?â Jason asked leaning closer causing her to move back.
âWeirdâ he thought.
âI donât know. You seem to know everybodyâ.
He smirked on the inside.
âOkay letâs take it away from boys now. Have you kissed a boy before?â
She glared at him.
âIâm guessing thatâs a noâ he hummed.
âLike I would want to exchange saliva with anyone. That is disgustingâ.
âWhat if the guy you like wants to do it with you?â
She was silent. Which meant she was considering it and wouldnât be opposed to it. He hoped.
âWell when you put it that wayâ she whispered her eyes on the table. âIt doesnât sound so badâ.
âWhat about sex?â
âDo you have to ruin things?â
âI should be the one saying thatâ Jason thought.
âSex is for after marriageâ.
Jason laughed.
âWhatâs so funny?â she asked.
âNothingâ he laughed again.
She waited for him to finish.
It was just so funny. He remembered when he told himself that. That heâd save himself for marriage. Well she looked like sheâd stick to it.
âAre you done now?â she asked.
âYesâ he replied sitting up. âSo if you donât like sex, tell me what you likeâ.
âI like my education andâŚ.â
âWell I figured. School and all that. But apart from books, what else?â
âWell there isâŚ..no donât worry about itâ.
âWhat? No way, tell me!â
âI do like dancingâ.
Okay he wasnât expecting that. Knowing her and how she loved to ruin things, she may say ballroom dancing or something close.
âBallet to be specificâ.
âSo youâre flexible?â Jason smirked.
âYesâ she replied not actually seeing anything wrong with the question. âBut thatâs just a distractionâ.
âItâs not if you are really passionate about itâ. He saw the way her eyes lit up when he mentioned the word. It was the first time she really looked to be enjoying their conversations.
âItâs a distraction and I canât afford to get distracted when I have to go to collegeâ.
âWhat do you want to be?â
âA lawyerâ she replied.
âWell you certainly dress like oneâ he thought. If she liked dancing she should really go for it. He really wondered how she was raised. She had no phone, everything was bad in her eye, and dressing so old. She really wasnât enjoying her teenage years.
âWhat do you hate?â
âJason Angleââ she replied but she couldnât hide her smile.
He was quiet. He wasnât going to lose it. He was not going to blow up.
Just then an idea hit him.
âThis guy you likeâŚâ he began and he could see she had all her attention.
âIf you had the chance, would you go for it?â
âYesâ she replied without thinking.
âAnd would you kiss him?â he teased. âYou know, exchange saliva?â
âLike I said, I wouldâ she repeated.
âWhat about sex?â he looked at her holding in a laugh. âWould you fornicate with him too?â
She was suspiciously silent. Okay that was weird. Was she really mulling it over? âHuhâŚ.Kelly?â he asked.
âIt wouldnât be call fornication. I love him, and if he loves me back, itâd be called making love. Different from what you do!â she pointed out smartly.
âEh?â he looked at her confused.
âYou donât love the girls you sleep withâ she explained slowly. âAm I wrong or am I right?â she looked him in the eye, daring him to prove her wrong.
âL-love mustnât be involved before you-before that happensâ he stuttered. So uncharacteristic of him.
âYes. Thatâs why thereâs sex, and thereâs making loveâ she finished.
âI thought you said sex is for actual marriage?â he asked, unwilling to let her get away with that. Was she trying to lie with him?
âEventually, making loveâŚâ she made air quotes. âTurns into sex over time in marriage. Thatâs why most partners cheat. It wonât even be sex for me because my love wonât fade over timeâ. She had a dreamy smile as she said so.
Jason just stared. Lost and dumbfounded. Was she really in love with this guy? And whoever he was, did he love her back. Loving at such a young age only led to one thing. Getting hurt.
âWho is he?â he asked softly.
âSomeone you knowâ and she sounded teasing.
He didnât know why she and others took the term weird. She was a normal high school student. Well she seemed like someone in her freshman year than in her senior year. With the dumb, love-struck expression. She should know the truth. Things like that didnât always work out in high school.
âCould it be me?â he thought. She said someone he knew. And she was being really mean to him. She might be using film logic. Being mean to him, when in reality she liked him. So she wouldnât make it easy for him. He hid his victorious smirk. He would play her game.
âAnd has this boy ever noticed you? Talked to you even?â time for him to be serious. He needed to find out about this âmystery boyâ.
âIâm not really sure. But since I was schooling here, we have exchanged words. Not full conversations, but he is outgoingâ she had a smile, seemed to be remembering a distant memory. Her dreamy face was really funny.
âYou are seriously gone for this guyâ he laughed.
âYeahâ she agreed looking down at the table. âI am goneâ she agreed with him.
âAndâŚ.would you like for him to notice you?â time for him to be excited.
âWell, yes. It is senior year, Iâm not sure if Iâll ever see him again. Thereâs no time for me to live my life, the way I want like the presentâ she said vehemently.
âAwesome!â he exclaimed. A little bit too loud and suspicious for her, but she didnât care. It was strange he was asking about the boy she liked, but that made her happy. And talking about the boy she liked to someone other than herself, was actually really nice. He seemed to understand. Maybe Jason was sincere in his motive to be her friend.
Looks like he would be borrowing everything he knew from the movies. She pretended not to like him, and he was pretending to be clueless. She would be in need of a complete makeover to want to catch the attention of the boy she liked, which was him. They would get closer, until he wears her down and she gives herself to him. Heâll get his five thousand dollars, and sheâll get her experience that things wouldnât always turn out the way she wanted.
She was so innocent and oblivious to some things, that he actually felt bad for her.
âI have an idea!â he announced.
âWhich is what?â she sounded interested to him.
âWeâre going to make this guy you like notice you. Are you game?â he leaned closer, his eyes playful, but his whole demeanor serious.
âI-I donât knowâŚ..â she had said earlier she didnât want to change herself for anyone. But this was for someone she liked. And she wasnât dumb. She knew the type of girls majority of boys liked, and she wasnât that. But she loved him, and wanted his attention.
âI know that you saidâŚ..â
âI accept!â she grinned. âIâm game. Whatâs your plan?â she was so happy.
âDo you have a swimsuit?â he questioned.
Her excited look left her face for a while. âYeah I do. Why?â
âTomorrow, your education begins. Weâre going to the beachâ he explained.
âBut why do we need to go to the beach for that?â she asked genuinely confused.
âDonât doubt my methodsâ he dismissed her worries. âBeach tomorrow. Should we meet there, or will I pick you up?â he asked.
âIâll meet you thereâ.
âBut you donât have a phoneâ he pointed out. âLet me just come pick you upâ he offered. He didnât get why she was so adamant about keeping him away.
âDonât worry about itâ she waved it off. âWeâll see tomorrow. Can you take me back now?â she asked so soft, that he could consider her sweet. But he knew just how bitter she was.
âSureâ he wouldnât spoil it for her. He had made her day. Made her a promise to get the boy she liked to notice her. Which would be a date. Just the two of them at the beach. She was already falling. And soon, Chad would be handing over his money.
âAnd stop hereâ Kelly said.
âWhy canât I just drop you at your door?â he questioned. It was really weird.
âThis is okayâ she stepped out. âTomorrow, bright and earlyâ she smiled at him. She had been smiling throughout today. Normally, she doesnât smile at him. Today was really her lucky day. She was in love with him. How sad.
âI think you should really get a phone. When the boy you love notices you, is it only in school youâll talk?â he had never met someone else like her. Not even the strictest of parents.
âIâll handle that. Later Jasonâ she closed the door. âTomorrowâ and she began her walk.
He watched her go, but he couldnât wait till she walked to a house. She wouldnât be inviting him to her house, and he wouldnât be with her long enough to be in her house. He reversed and drove off.
Kelly opened the door, with a blinding smile on her face.
Senior year was going toâŚâŚwouldnât be so bad. Was this how it was for her sister? Was it little things like this that causedâŚ..NO. She wasnât her sister. She wouldnât commit the same mistake that her sister did. She had learnt from her mistake. Her mum had thoroughly talked to her and advised her.
She knew what to do and not what to do.
She did a little twirl and ran up the stairs. That smile not leaving her face as she walked into her room, straight to her closet and looked for her swimsuit. The beachâŚ.she lost her smile a little. When everything was still okay between the three of them, they used to go to the beach. Every weekend.
At that time, she didnât know. But now it seemed that the beach was the only thing her mum loved. Now there wasnât anything they did together anymore. They werenât a family anymore.
Adriana had justâŚ.
She couldnât let that dampen her mood.
Soon, sheâd have her relationship. And sheâd be happy.
Jason was surprisingly okay to talk to. She didnât know what to expect from him if they interacted. But, he was actually helping her. She should be suspicious. What was he planning? Why anyway? What did he hope to get out of it?
She rummaged through her closet.
Smiling to herself and humming a tune.
All the while, she didnât know her mum stood there, silently watching her. She hummed to herself and walked away.
Something was wrong, she thought to herself.
