Chapter 283: Chapter 283: What it takes to survive!
"This should be enough," the baron said with a smile.
There were ten trees fallen on the ground. Almost all of them were chopped from the middle and made equal heights to use as building material.
The next one hour, Theo saw a side of the baron he hadn’t before.
With the ten trees, a lot of tangly branches as rope, and the big leaves as the roof, the baron was able to instruct the small group in making the whole shelter.
When it was done, Theo went inside it again and nodded to himself. He was sweating a lot from the hard work, but it all felt worth the time when the end product was in front of them.
"We have made our sleeping arrangements, but a camp is not complete until you have a campfire." The baron spoke and instructed the trio to bring as many sticks as they could find on the ground.
Theo couldn’t help but be curious as to how similar the gate’s world was to theirs, and his old one. Nothing except the glowing orbs on the trees and the crawlers seemed to be out of the ordinary.
"Hmm, you have done well picking the driest sticks. Good job." The baron said and started stacking them in a way it looked like a campfire.
When Theo was wondering how he would ignite the fire, the baron just got the metallic box out and rummaged through it.
Another small tool came from it, and he just scraped them together to ignite sparks that were dense and big enough to ignite the firewood and start making the smoke come out.
"I see you have brought the utensils needed. I won’t be bringing mine out for now then." He spoke and asked for them from Clara, who happily passed them.
"Alright, I need all of you to have a mind that can think practically." The baron spoke while eyeing each member of the trio with a knowing smile.
Elias only gulped, while Theo could tell something bad was going to happen.
While Clara just stayed neutral, anything was okay for her.
"See those beast corpses there?" he said, pointing at the one circle Theo had made when he was surrounded.
"Get one of them to me right now," he spoke.
There was silence for a few seconds, and finally, Clara took the first step and got the one closest to them.
Theo could feel the disgust Clara was feeling while holding that thing covered with sticky liquid.
Clara casually handed it over to the baron who had a smile on his face. She was able to keep up her poker face, but Theo could tell that was not what she wanted to do.
In front of everyone, the baron used the poison tester again, and when it came out to be ’green’, that was when Theo realized what was going to happen.
He had an inkling before, but now he was sure.
"Who has the best butchering skills among you three? I know my son isn’t. Leaves you two." The baron asked while swinging the snake left and right, making the sticky liquids start slobbering down.
Theo pointed at Clara, making her shoulder jerk. She looked at Theo with a defeated look and nodded toward the baron before going to the small bag she was carrying.
Taking her butchering equipment out, everyone stared at her near the campfire while she was readying herself to make the first cut.
The next five minutes were hard to watch as it took that whole time to get that whole slobbery skin off.
When Theo looked at the inside flesh, he couldn’t help but be surprised.
"I thought this would be whitish inside, like a shelled crab." Theo spoke out, and yes, there was a beast with this name in this world that Theo liked eating a lot.
"Hmm... It’s better that it has proper red flesh rather than those disgusting things you like to eat." The baron said with relief, making Theo remember that one dinner when the baron almost threw up due to being curious about what Theo had on his plate.
Ten minutes later, there were proper cuts of textured meat in the big leaf they had got from a fallen tree. The leaf was washed with the help of the drinking water they had brought.
And according to the baron, he had a thousand more of these bottles inside the spatial box, making them spend the water with a lax mind now.
The sliced meat pieces were then cooked on the fire with the help of cooking utensils and spices.
And before they knew it, there was a plate in front of everyone with a few pieces of that cooked meat on it.
"Why does this look so good?" Theo asked to himself but out loud, making Elias nod.
"I tried my best to make it presentable, my lord, young master." Clara said while eyeing the slices of meat on her plate.
Just while they were being skeptical of whether they were hungry enough to eat this kind of stuff yet, the baron already had the last piece of the slice in his mouth while his plate moved to Clara again.
"This needs more spice. I don’t know which one, but for now, it’s okay. Give me more." He said while still chewing the food, making Clara nod and first give a lot more pieces to the baron until he said it was enough.
Theo already knew the overeating habit of the baron, and so did the others, so nobody cared.
He took the first bite of the meat, and it took him a few seconds to get used to its taste.
"It’s a little gamey, but better than what I had in mind," Theo spoke with flashing eyes while he had the second bite.
The food in front of the campfire had another kind of taste and calming effect to it.
And before Theo knew it, he was already hooked on camping and eating like this, making him think why he always had those extravagant dinners all this time instead of this.
