Chapter 40: Chapter 40

They jogged over his lifeless body, Mom screamed and stooped down to his level; taking him into an uncomfortable embrace. She was sobbing hard, Dad and Kassim were trying to take him out of her grisp but couldn't.

"You know what? I think we should just let him die!" Kassim thundered, he was tired of trying to hold Adyan and Mom shrugging off his hand. He knew upon hearing the word; death, she would let them have him.

She snapped up her head and glared at him with her bloodshot eyes. "Every soul shall test death! But don't you dare call that upon my son, he will die for sure-but not now. Idiot," she yelled and stood up, handing Adyan to an unspoken Dad-he couldn't get himself to utter a word, Adyan's lifeless body was a hard blow to his brittle heart.

Kassim squatted down and lifted up Adyan, "I'm sorry, Mom, that was just for you to let him go. We have to be in the hospital, remember?" With that, he flashed her an apologetic look before walking towards their car.

The drive was hushed, only Mom's ruffled sobs and Dad's and Kassim's hammering heart. They would turn severally and have a glimpse of his face that was placed on Mom's laps before turning their attention back to the road.

They arrived at the hospital, and he was taken into the emergency ward; whilst they stood hanging in the corridor-their Adyan's life swinging on the fastest swing they have ever seen.

The doctor came out, and Adyan was taken to the resting room-oxygen mask placed firmly on his face. The doctor ordered them to meet him in his office and walked off-them tailing behind.

"What happened to him? Could he be safe and out of danger?" Mom whimpered, without even sitting on the chairs facing him.

Kassim guided her to the chair and made her sat down, before the doctor answered her question. "I can't say he is out of danger, but his heart is in danger; it can fail in every second we're counting," he informed, removing his glasses off the bridge of his nose.

A shocked gasp escaped Mom's lips, as she covered her mouth with both palms-avoiding a wail to escape. "Doctor, please-he just came back two days ago, how could you tell me that his heart will fail anytime? He was perfectly fine before this evening," her words trembled, with tears soaking her face.

Pinching the gap between his eyes, the doctor felt the words were so heavy for him. How could he tell a heart broken mother the condition of her son? "I'm sorry Hajia, but your son suffers from hypertension; that's what caused this bradycardia attack-which means decrease in heart rate. And I'm sorry to say, but his has gotten to the worst phase, and if care is not taken-it may lead to death."

All their eyes bulged out, hearts gripped with an unvocalised pain-as they stare at him dumbfoundedly-even Mom couldn't move a finger, all they hear around them is their heart beats.

"What's the solution to this, Doctor?" Kassim tried to speak up, seeing how his parent got hooked into a hiatus.

"We'll put him into medication, but all I have to say now is; you should try and ask him what's eating him up, also-he should have a two weeks bed rest for his blood pressure to regulate-or else; there is way for paralysis."

"Thank you, Doctor," with that, Kassim grisped their hands and guided them to Adyan's resting room. They were all silent through their walk, Mom had her eyed shut close, only her could feel the pain in her heart. Could this be how Adyan loves Hayfah? Right there, she avowed on finding Hayfah no matter where she is in the world.

They entered the room and found him sleeping lifelessly on the bed, with only the heart rate machine humming silently, and the sound shattered their hearts.

They didn't know how Dad was suffering so hard to breathe, when their attention was back to them, he was almost out. "Take him home, give him his medicines and stay with him, Kassim. Don't leave him for a second please, I will stay with Adyan," Mom slurred, painfully looking at Dad, she can't take more pain, her frail heart is already scorched.

"Will you be safe?" He asked haltingly, taking a grisp of Dad's hands.

"I'll call Hajia Indo to stay with me, don't worry," and she smiled ruefully at him. That's the nature of Ni'imah; she always smile even in time of distress.

He nodded and left the room with Dad's hand wrapped over his shoulders.

She rummaged for her phone in her bag and dialed a number, told her about the condition in hand and the hospital before ending the call-as she stare at Adyan without blinking an eye. She isn't feeling anything in her heart, it's as if her heart was ripped off.

About thirty minutes, an agitated woman barged inside the room, with sweat drenched on her forehead. How she heard her friend talked wasn't something she could delay for, she knew it might be something huge.

"A'i," Mom slurred, her eyes were red; but there wasn't tears shedding; only a carved pain etched in her eyes.

"Hajia Ni'imah, what really happened?" She asked, taking her hands in hers.

"He's in pain, he might die or get paralyzed. Ali too, they'll all leave me, won't they?" Mom asked dryly, looking at Adyan without a brink of tears.

"Listen, you need to voice it out, cry and feel the pain, let's go to the mosque, he have to rest," with that; she lifted her up, and wrapped her arms around her shoulders.

"I can't leave him alone, what if he wakes up?" Mom argued, her eyes glued to Adyan's sleeping figure.

"Don't worry I came with a lady, she'll stay with him," Maami consoled and dragged her out of the room-almost bumping on Hayfah that was entering the room with a food basket in her hands.

"Where's Rayhan?" Maami asked, looking at Hayfah's worried face-she knew something might definitely be up, but this isn't the time for inquiry.

"She saw her friend, I left her with her," Hayfah informed, the rhythm in her heart beating erratically. She glued her eyes on Mom, an unfathomable feeling ebbing in her heart.

"Okay, stay with him please, if he wakes up-call me immediately." And with that, Maami guided Mom out of the room; both their eyes were glued on each other. Mom heaved a sigh when they were out of sight.

Hayfah darted her eyes back to the door, and felt her knees going weak, her heart silently humming. She pushed the door knob and uttered a faint salam. Locking her eyes with the white shiny tiles, she felt tears pooling her eyes; and she wondered why. She felt a feeling of contentment, a feeling of finally getting the one gliding through her soul.

She entered the room without looking at the lifeless figure, her limbs were slackened. The chair Mom was sitting was placed very close to the patient. She moved to the chair and was about to lounge it back-when her glassy eyes falled on his lifeless sleeping face.

She gasped unbelievably, not wanting to believe what she's seeing. She knew she was thinking about him all day, could she possibly be hallucinating? Could he be the one? Her tears were rolling in anguish, she couldn't even move a finger.

What happened to him? Was this the life he was living? She didn't believe her eyes-so she slowly stretched her palm to his radiant face, as her face was brought to his face-making her tears to drip directly on his closed eyelids.

"You?" She whimpered, when her warm palm got in contact with his face.

She broke down completely, her chest constricting with pain, the oxygen mask was piercing through her cornea, right there, she knew she was the lucky one-for she can breath normally without being helped.

Drawing the chair very close to the bed, she slumped on it and closed her mouth with her veil, making her sob to sound muffled. Her eyes were intense and unshaken on his face, as she kept crying silently, yet; agonizingly.

"Wake up, please," she whimpered again, not being able to help herself on her choked tears.

The heart rate machine made a loud beep, and suddenly-a long straight line formed! Her eyes grew wide like a saucers, from the knowledge she has, she knew what this meant.

"Adyan!" She screamed, holding his hand, crying profusely. She couldn't believe what she's seeing right now. She had finally met him, and life decided to take him away? No way!

"Adyan please, please wake up-it's Hayfah- I beg of you, Adyan. You need to live, you have to live for me, and for yourself." She was devastated to the extent that she lost her sanity, she was practically shaking him-her tears dripping on his body-as she kept looking between the machine and his chest, as if waiting for any miracle to happen.

"Adyan, I know you can hear me huh? I'm your Tesoro, and it means treasure. Your treasure is out there, Adyan, you have to come back and hide it beneath your soul-I belong there. I belong here!" And she kept fondling the surface enclosing his steady heart.

He didn't move nor flinch from the contact, and that made her more agitated. She sat on the bed beside him, his hand still in her grisp. "You know what, Adyan? Please don't leave me, your Mother will die if you leave, I don't know her, but I feel a spiritual connection with her. You can't do this to us right? You can't scorch many lives at a time huh? Please wake up dear, it's Hayfah," she was talking silently, with his hand brought to her lips as she kissed them ruefully.

Disbelievingly, she kept looking at his unmoving body, "Adyan, one more time; you're shattering my heart, wake up please, dan Allah!" And she rested her head on his chest-finally giving up.

"I love you, Adyan, pleaseeee.....," she let the words trail off, she could feel the pain gliding through her heart; filling those empty vessels of her ventricles.

He took in a deep breath and began coughing laboriously. She heard his chest reverberating, but she knew it was just her hallucination. Slowly, she began feeling his heart beating so fast it scared her, and the machine began humming like before.

Not wanting to break her heart once more, she lifted up her face and looked at the machine-the heart was beating! And with tears of joy and felicity-she yawed her gaze to the beholder of her heart, and found him struggling to take off the oxygen mask: his eyes were spilling tears, even though they were closed.

"Don't, you'll hurt yourself, I'll call the doctor," she placed her hand on his struggling one, trying to stop him-it felt overwhelming seeing him alive!

He shook his head slowly, "I have to look for her, Mom, she's my other half remember? I dreamt about her waking me up, jolting me out of my dark world. She need me, I know she's crying right now, I can feel her tears all over me," his eyes were still close as he finally took off the mask, taking in a heavy breath.

A smile curved Hayfah's trembling lips, and she placed her hand on his, "It wasn't a dream, Adyan. It's Hayfah, I'm Hayfah, open your eyes please."

The machine beeped upon his increased heart beat; he darted his eyes open, and his honey orbs fell into her doe like orbs. "You?" He slurred, feeling as she squeezed their entwined hands.

"Yes, and put on the oxygen mask, I have to call the doctor," she smiled joyfully at him, tears of happiness streaming down.

"You aren't going anywhere, you want to leave again, don't you? And besides-you're my oxygen."
