Chapter 23: Chapter 23

After Clinton snubbed his parents, doctor Ken was asked to give the phone to the maid that has been taking care of Clinton. It was best they say hello to her and thank her heartily for not running off like other maids. All their guess pointed at Karen the chief housekeeper but what surprised them was that doctor Ken claimed that she wasn't a major maid in the house and therefore can't describe her to them which in essence means it isn't Karen. But who is she.

Doctor Ken replied yes and started to walk towards Elizabeth to give her the iPad so she could speak with Mr and Ms Smith.

"Elizabeth, Mr Smith and his wife would like to speak to you,"Doctor Ken announced on reaching where Elizabeth was. Elizabeth was somehow startled and reluctant; something she didn't understand herself as it wasn't like it was the first time she would be speaking with the Smiths or maybe because she hasn't spoken on phone with them or probably because of the situation of things currently but she took the iPad from the doctor and placed it before her.

At the end of Mr Smith and his wife, husband and wife wondered which of the maid was bold enough to stay back and care for their son since it wasn't Karen, they couldn't think of anyone else who could make such sacrifices especially as it was mostly Karen that they treated specially more than the other maid.

"Hello Mr and Ms Smith," Elizabeth greeted forcing a little smile. She could see the shock expression plastered on their faces. Why wouldn't they be when they allowed their son treated her like she was nothing. They would have sworn with their lives that a day like this would never come but no one actually knows tomorrow.

"Hello, Elizabeth...how are you…" Mr Smith stuttered while his wife shifted uncomfortably in her seat.

"I'm very well sir," Elizabeth responded. Mrs Smith was behaving like prickles was placed on her seat. She didn't know whether to sit or to stand. Elizabeth laughed in her mind. Such shameless people.

"Errrm, thank you my daughter for saving my son…"

'Who is your daughter? Please mind your words old man' Elizabeth meant to reply but instead nodded calmly.

"I truly am grateful… I mean my family and I, and the doctor has given me report on everything you asked for. I will make sure you are provided with all the necessary things and support you where and when you would be needing it…" Mr Smith concluded.

"Actually sir, I was waiting for you to be back before tendering my resignation letter but since it would take a while for you to get back and you are here...I mean we are speaking now...I would love to officially tender my resignation intentions to you now…"

"Resignation? You don't have to my dear. I will pay you triple of your salary…"

"It's not about the money sir, I want to leave," Elizabeth blurted out without thinking but she didn't regret it as she felt irritated by Mr Smith intentions of trying to buy her with money. Do they think everything is about money.

"Please my daughter, help us...I understand my son hasn't been nice to you but I hope you can find a place in your heart to forgive him and take care of him... please my daughter…" Ms Smith pleaded.

Elizabeth in her wildest dream would never have believed that Ms Smith could plead in that manner and definitely not with her of all people in the world. Well, it's understandable, she needs help and right now she is their only hope for their son survival and being safe from the public. Why won't they throw their pride under the carpet and beg. And now all of a sudden, she has become their daughter. She felt like making them plead more but decided to pity them a little as they are still her employer.

"Okay sir, ma I will stay a little more for his sake… I mean I will stay and help him get back on his feet."

"Thank you," the couple said in chorus. Elizabeth felt a little awkward watching the almighty Smith look so pitiful before her. She took the iPad away from her face and handed it back to doctor Ken.

Doctor Ken took it from her, said a few things with the Smiths before ending the call.

"Done checking out the whole place?" doctor Ken asked as soon as he dropped the call and started walking towards where Elizabeth stood.

Elizabeth just nodded without saying anything.

"Then, can I have a word with you now?"

"Sure doctor Ken," Elizabeth answered and turned to face him.

"Clinton today refused to speak with his parents nor hear them out…"

"Why?"Elizabeth interrupted getting interested in what the doctor wants to say.

"I guess he is still mad at them."

"Errm, okay so why are you telling me? I mean…"

"Can you speak to him? I believe he will listen to you if you speak to him about it please."

"I'm not sure doctor Ken. We are not exactly best of friends or even in the good book of each other so what makes you think he will listen to me.

Seriously, doctor you don't know Clinton and most importantly you don't know our history. Forget it doctor Ken, I'm the person he hates the most in this world and I doubt he will even listen to me for any reason whatsoever." Elizabeth said as she remembered her days of being hated by Clinton Smith. She hated to think about it but times like this she couldn't help but remember it. While she feels sometimes that bad should be paid back with bad and good should be paid back with good, she wonders if she is doing the right thing. What baffled her all those times Clinton treated her bad was there was no tangible reason for him to have hated her that much or maybe he had his reasons which she knew nothing about but if only he told her or if she had any idea in any way, maybe she would have known how to plead with him and know how to appease him.

"Please if you don't mind, can you at least give it a trial, Mr Smith and his wife would really appreciate."

"I can't assure you anything. I will give it a trial anyway," Elizabeth said and left.

She would try to talk to him but won't stress on it. She shouldn't be involved in their family's issues and try to sort out their difference and problems and not put her head into it. When in the world did she become the right hand person to Clinton.
