Chapter 158: Chapter 158
Miles Grant’s eyes curved into crescent shapes as he laughed, his beautiful eyes flickering slightly.
Landon Lawson, seeing that Miles was fine, nodded in relief. He had been worried that Mr. Grant would give Miles a hard time. "As long as he didn’t make things difficult for you, I would feel very guilty if he had." Landon spoke slowly, and Miles chuckled softly, gently patting Landon’s shoulder, "Don’t worry, with the relationship we’ve had for so many years, how could it end over a business deal?"
They walked toward the car, and Miles looked up anxiously at the window where Vera Yates was. The bright light went out suddenly, so it seemed Vera must have fallen asleep.
Landon noticed that Miles had stopped walking and turned his head to look at him, only to find Miles still staring at the elevated apartment. "If you like her, why not pursue her?"
"You know perfectly well; the one she has always loved is you."
When they reached the car, Miles didn’t get in but directly faced Landon: "For all these years, her heart has been with you. Even though you married Sienna Quinn, she never gave up, even telling me she would never marry. Why can’t you give her a chance?"
Looking at Miles’ serious expression, Landon slowly replied, "I’ve always seen her as a sister; you know that. I can’t give her the future she wants."
Seeing Landon’s unprecedented determination, Miles was unsure whether to be happy or sad for Vera. "But now, because of you and Sienna, she’s not only become depressed but her work has also been affected. I know you’re completely focused on Sienna now, but Vera grew up with us. Can you just stand by and watch her being defamed ?"
Landon furrowed his handsome brows. What Miles said had been on his mind these past few days, but one side was Sienna, the other was Vera, how was he supposed to choose?
Moreover, there was one point Landon felt Sienna was absolutely right about.
"Vera is the princess of the Vance Family. Even if I don’t get involved, the Vance Family can handle it well."
"Landon, are you really going to choose a woman over everything else now?" Miles, uncharacteristically angry, usually gentle and elegant, now had red eyes, staring angrily at Landon, rendering him speechless.
Landon pressed his lips together. Though he and Miles had known each other for many years, he’d never seen him lose his temper before; it seemed today he was truly furious.
"I can’t keep giving Vera the wrong impression; it’s so easy for me to lead her on."
"Lead her on? You’ve been leading her on for so many years already."
Miles said furiously, but this time Landon chose silence. Since he had made his choice, he would act on it.
Miles, seeing Landon not speaking, realized his emotions had been too intense a moment ago. He calmed down and spoke slowly, "I’m sorry for getting so emotional earlier."
"It’s alright. Actually, you’re not wrong; only by being firm with her can she truly start living."
Landon slowly spoke, opened the car door, and sat inside, while Miles didn’t get in, stating he just wanted to clear his mind with a walk.
Landon understood Miles was worried about Vera, and his outburst was understandable. Having known Miles for so long, how could he not understand his nature?
Though reserved and gentle, he was also a stubborn person; giving him some space to think alone could be beneficial.
As soon as Landon left, Miles turned back to Vera Yates’ apartment.
At that moment, Vera had taken off her pleated skirt and was searching back and forth, unable to find what she was looking for, her brows furrowed: "Where on earth did it fall?"
The doorbell rang, and Vera changed clothes and opened the door to see Miles standing there, "Miles? Didn’t you leave with Stephen?"
"I’ve brought you something."
Miles took out a small silver blade, only the size of a thumb, which if not looked at carefully, was barely noticeable. This text is hosted at novèlfire.net
Vera’s pupils shrank.
"How... did it end up with you?" Vera realized she’d misspoken as soon as the words left her mouth. Miles had never known what kind of person she was, but now she spoke wrongly; how could he not be suspicious?
Miles chuckled softly, his eyes peering into the apartment, "Aren’t you going to let me in?"
Miles sat on the sofa, looking at the pleated skirt lying next to him, his mouth curling into a smile, "The blade was taken off your pleated skirt."
"I know everything." Miles spoke gently, and even having uncovered Vera’s actions, he didn’t lash out, nor did he show any disappointment. Such an attitude from Miles made Vera unable to fathom him.
"Actually, when I saw the cut on Sienna’s palm, I knew it was a blade wound. Don’t forget, I’m an expert with scalpels; if I couldn’t recognize such a wound, I really should resign out of guilt."
Miles chuckled softly, placing the blade on the table, its tip still stained with Sienna’s blood.
Vera squinted at Miles, wondering what he meant by saying these things to her. Not only was he not angry, but he was increasingly gentle with her, which made Vera feel something was amiss.
Lowering her head, Vera realized that since Miles could still speak to her so calmly, he must not be angry. So, she didn’t have to act so carefully anymore. Clearly, Miles had no intention of exposing everything; otherwise, he would’ve shown the blade from the start, and no matter how she tried to explain, Landon wouldn’t have believed her.
"So, will you tell Stephen?"
Miles lifted his head, looking at Vera’s tear-filled eyes, his heart softened, and he hastily said, "Why would I tell him? You only did this because Sienna went too far, and besides, I understand the feeling of loving someone. No matter how excessive the actions are, it never feels too much."
The man pressed his lips, his handsome face filled with urgency.
For Vera, he would do anything, as he knew too well the frustration of unrequited love. Even if it meant falling out with Landon, he thought it was worth it.
Vera sniffled, her voice choked, "I really won’t do it again. Please believe me."
"Of course, I believe you. If it weren’t for Sienna’s aggression, you wouldn’t have done this. You’re the most kind-hearted." Miles gently ruffled Vera’s hair, his eyes shadowy. Since things were , it was time for some actions.
Sienna, your good days are numbered!
