Chapter 123: Chapter 123
"Stephen, don’t be angry. When you’re , it scares me too." The woman’s voice was so feeble, and her trembling body made Landon pause for a moment. He hurriedly patted Vera Yates’ shoulder, afraid that he had just frightened her. ɪꜰ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴏʀᴇ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs, ᴘʟᴇᴀsᴇ ᴠɪsɪᴛ novelꜰire.net
"It’s me who scared you just now," Landon tried to rein in his anger, comforting the woman he had scared.
A cheerful laugh interrupted the two, and Landon frowned slightly, displeased, before looking at Sienna Quinn with visible annoyance: "What are you laughing at?"
"Laughing at the two of you!" Sienna replied bluntly.
Landon’s brow furrowed slightly; he had already experienced Sienna’s sharp tongue. But no matter how sharp a tongue is, there should be a time and a place for it. Why cause trouble when Vera is at her most fragile?
"Actually, I’m just curious. Actress Vance has always avoided these situations since becoming an actress, knowing they are inevitable. Why is she attending today?"
"Because of the rumors online..." She glanced pitifully at Landon, causing him to feel guilty. He hadn’t realized that because of the news about him and Sienna, Vera’s situation had become so difficult.
"I no longer have any jobs scheduled, and my agent is anxious, trying to help me get my next role. I can see her difficulty. If I don’t go, she’ll have a hard time, especially since that person is the biggest investor in this film."
Vera Yates appeared pitiful, always thinking of others, even if it meant sacrificing her own comfort.
"Vera, it’s my fault that you’re in this position," Landon frowned deeply. He never liked bringing trouble to others, but this time he had made things so difficult for Vera.
Vera shook her head with a gentle smile, her gaze full of tenderness, "It’s okay."
Evan Quinn rolled his eyes, seeing his dad’s satisfied expression. What a fool; couldn’t he see the pretense?
Evan deftly pulled over a chair and looked up at Sienna with a bright smile: "Mommy, sit down and talk. Standing must be tiring."
"You’re always the best, Chloe," Sienna affectionately ruffled Evan’s hair. She hadn’t originally wanted Vera to know about Evan due to Vera’s cruelty, which she had long realized. Even though she returned with Evan, from the first day they were back, she was wary of these people. Landon might fight her for custody, and others might directly harm her child.
But now, not only did Landon know about Evan, the media had captured him, and even Miles Grant, who once personally attempted to end her life, had seen him.
In the past life, Miles’s relationship with Vera was murky. Since even he knew, how could Vera not? She would stop at nothing to win Landon, so how could she not be bothered by Evan’s existence?
But since Vera knew, hiding Evan further would be useless. This woman would try anything to target Evan.
Rather than keeping him hidden, it would be better to openly let Evan be seen by Vera.
Vera stared intently at Evan. This was Landon’s son, standing right before her. She’d seen his photos before, but seeing a face so similar to Landon’s stirred a burning rage within her.
Why did Sienna dare to give Landon a child?
What right did he have to exist in this world?
All the resentment and anger mixed together.
"This must be Stephen’s and Sienna’s child. He’s truly adorable," Vera said weakly, though her gaze was tender. Yet, the smile that didn’t reach her eyes chilled Evan, making him shiver. That strange lady’s gaze was terrifying.
Evan buried his head in Sienna’s chest, arms wrapped around her neck.
Evan’s reaction made Vera uncomfortable. She nestled against Landon’s arm: "Seems like he doesn’t really like me."
Sienna sat down, holding Evan on her lap, and looked directly at Vera, smiling gently: "It’s normal for my son not to like you, isn’t it?"
How could a child who almost didn’t exist possibly like her?
Children’s emotions are the purest, and they express them directly. Who they like and dislike is evident at a glance.
Sienna’s words were unapologetic, making Vera give a forced smile, struggling to maintain her demeanor.
Landon squinted at Sienna, but she was unfazed, her gaze once again turning to Vera, "Because you can’t land a role?"
Sienna shook her head, scrutinizing Vera, "A Vance family daughter, never short on money, scoring leading roles right out of the gate, would bend over backwards for an investment she despises? Perhaps Actress Vance is still drunk, muttering inebriated nonsense?"
Landon frowned; although Sienna’s words were harsh, they weren’t without reason given Vera’s background and connections. If she wanted roles, she could get them. Why bother with a nobody investor?
The Vance family, though not as prominent as the Lawson family, is still a prestigious household.
Landon’s subtle actions were clear to Vera. He was actually swayed by Sienna’s few words.
"I don’t always want to rely on family connections; I want to fight with my own strength."
"Then you should be fully prepared, so what’s the purpose of calling Landon? Isn’t his appearance another form of reliance? And this is the first time I’ve heard you can’t drink?"
Though phrased as a question, Sienna’s smiling lips and deep eyes startled Vera. How did Sienna know about her ability to drink? Was Sienna going to tell Landon everything she knew?
Sienna stared at Vera. Starting with her grandfather, the Vance family loved wine research, and their villa had a wine cellar. The two were childhood friends; Sienna often followed Vera into the cellar and witnessed her excellent drinking capacity firsthand.
How could this party’s limited alcohol make her blackout unless she was performing for Landon, declaring her stake? Was Landon hers?
Sienna smirked, but the feeling of everything under control made Vera’s wariness of her grow from within.
Landon noticed Vera’s frail look and near-teary eyes, feeling some discontent. Wasn’t Sienna’s speech overly barbed?
No matter what, Vera was her friend. Why speak so sharply, assuming everyone had such malicious intentions?
