Chapter 1962: Chapter 1962
"Let’s go then." Zheng Minghui rubbed his belly. While speaking, he accidentally touched the wound on his waist, causing him to gasp in pain.
He lifted his shirt to look, and the wound had already scabbed over. The recovery was quick, but it hurt even more now.
After Shen Mingke nodded, the two walked in a certain direction. Meanwhile, they failed to notice the figures quickly passing by in the distant buildings and the miniature drones in the sky tightly surveilling them.
Two hours later, at 2:52 AM, the two stood before an eerie alleyway, deep in thought, having circled most of the Cloud Gorge Base.
"Who knows, it’s been years since we’ve been here."
"Shall we go in and take a look?" They exchanged glances, nodded, and then Shen Mingke led the way as both entered the alley. Shortly, dazzling lights from the Zombie King Camutos appeared from the south. This place was a multi-level building, three stories up and down, with a complex structure. In the center was a square-shaped building. The lack of sunlight for years had resulted in a heavy musty smell upon entry. The building had very few visible entrances, mostly long and narrow windows on the gray walls.
"Yes, it’s here!" Although not very clear, Shen Mingke vaguely remembered passing this place when they first found the person with Zheng Minghui.
However, compared to back then, the atmosphere here was dead silent, and the surrounding buildings showed no signs of life.
"Next, we should go down, right?" Zheng Minghui said uncertainly.
The two walked down the stairs; the further down they went, the darker it became. Soon, it wasn’t above ground anymore, and the corridors connected many underground parking lots. If someone accidentally entered here, it would be hard not to get lost.
After about ten minutes, they finally found a rust-covered water tank at the bottom level, relying on memories that time had almost corroded.
"This is it!" Zheng Minghui exclaimed joyfully, and Shen Mingke also showed an excited smile. He jogged over to the water tank and examined the welded ladder. Though rusty, the ladder’s steps were unusually smooth, indicating frequent use.
"Let’s go up." Shen Mingke called to Zheng Minghui, jumped up decisively, while Zheng Minghui, due to his waist injury, climbed up the stairs obediently. Above the water tank was a metal hatch covered with sod. Ordinary people wouldn’t consider opening it unless they were crazy.
But the two were different. Shen Mingke went over and grabbed the hatch with both hands, exerted strength, and with a "crack," the locked hatch was brutishly opened!
Without hesitation, he jumped in; the interior of the water tank was another world. The ground was hollowed out, connected to a deeper sewer. Shen Mingke, having jumped in without expecting it, crashed onto the platforms on both sides of the sewer with a loud thud.
"Damn, Old Shen, what’s wrong?"
Shen Mingke’s cry startled Zheng Minghui above. He immediately peered down to check, but it was too dark to see where Shen Mingke landed until his voice eventually reassured him.
"I’m fine, damn, that guy hollowed out underneath, it’s a bit high."
"Is that so? How high?"
"Then no worries, I’m coming down!"
"Hurry up!" In the darkness, Shen Mingke waved his hand at Zheng Minghui above, not worrying if he saw, and began examining the surroundings. He remembered that the first time he and Zheng Minghui came here, the tank’s bottom wasn’t hollow, but there was a field of mud. They had to crawl through a natural rock opening to reach this sewer.
Looking up, Shen Mingke vaguely saw the original rock opening was sealed; the only way down was to jump directly from over ten meters. Even if ordinary people accidentally climbed onto the tank, faced with such height, they’d give up immediately.
But they were Level 6 New Humans, such height meant nothing to them!
In no time, Zheng Minghui jumped down too. Despite being prepared, the splash of sewage mud was inevitable, landing him on his butt in the mess.
"You really picked a great spot."
"Ma De, have some sympathy, I’m injured, you know."
Complaining, Zheng Minghui stood up, hurriedly climbed onto the side platform, and scraped the mud off his hands onto the wall. They then proceeded forward, but a minute later, both halted and frowned.
"That guy didn’t move, did he?"
Before them was a red brick wall, blocking all paths ahead, erasing the narrow passage from memory. Shen Mingke scanned the surroundings. Except for the sewage openings on either side of the sewer, there was no door or any such entry. The thought that finding the person might be in vain struck them; had they come all this way for nothing?
Could it be... they were destined to wait for death at Cloud Gorge Base?
"Impossible, he couldn’t have left here, Old Zheng, let’s search carefully, the entrance must be hidden somewhere!"
Given the situation, Shen Mingke gave Zheng Minghui an instruction. They began examining the sewer surroundings, while he moved to the brick wall, punching it to pieces. But there was no path behind, only bare cement!
Still unconvinced, using the brute strength of a Level 6 New Human, he continued tearing into the wall!
Another four or five minutes passed. The cement wall was forcefully torn by hand to create a tunnel about six meters long, but the cement seemed endless. When the final punch hit, Shen Mingke’s hand plunged into the cement, pulling out dirt instead!
It had reached its end, and he stood dazed. Meanwhile, Zheng Minghui, unsuccessful in his long search, ran over, exclaiming, "Can’t find it; after so long, could that guy already be dead?" ɪꜰ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴏʀᴇ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs, ᴘʟᴇᴀsᴇ ᴠɪsɪᴛ 𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭⟡𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘦⟡𝘯𝘦𝘵
"Already dead..." Shen Mingke mumbled, struggling to accept this truth. But this seemed highly probable, leaving him bewildered.
Soon, dejected, he walked out of the tunnel and sat by the side platform, staring blankly ahead. Zheng Minghui also felt downcast, but just as he was about to comfort Shen Mingke, he suddenly recalled the smooth steps of the water tank ladder outside. He couldn’t help but narrow his eyes.
Soon he seemed to recall something else, quickly turning his gaze to the surrounding sewage openings!
