Chapter 321: Chapter 321
Kris Cooper’s gaze fell on the security manager’s face. "My assistant will come later. Don’t bill the gate repair cost to the company; I’ll cover it personally."
Public and private matters should be kept separate. Since he was the one who caused the damage, it was only right that he shoulder the cost himself.
"Okay, Mr. Cooper," the security manager hastened to reply, looking at him with concern. "Are you... are you hurt?!" Check latest chapters at NoveI[F]ire.net
"I’m fine. You all carry on. Get the gate fixed as soon as possible, and don’t let it affect the other residents’ comings and goings."
After giving an instruction to the group, Kris immediately turned and hurried after Vera.
Kris chased her out of the villa complex entrance, looked left and right, and quickly noticed Vera walking along the roadside.
"Vera!" He quickened his pace, catching up to her side. "Tommy Taylor will be here soon. Let’s wait for him here."
"Kris!" Vera turned her head, her large, bright dark eyes looking at him earnestly. "Shall we take a walk together?"
He nodded gently and walked beside her.
Vera took a few deep breaths, clearly wanting to say something but hesitating.
Sensing her hesitation, Kris spoke first. "What do you want to say?"
After they had walked a few more steps, Vera turned around and lifted her face to meet his gaze, her tone unusually serious. "Actually, today I... I wanted to refuse as well, but..."
"You silly girl!" Kris lifted his hands to rest them on her slender shoulders. "I trust you. It’s Nathan Leafcastle I don’t trust. I’m a man; I know exactly what he’s thinking. No matter his reasons, doesn’t it all come down to the fact that he likes you?"
"Vera!" Kris moved his hands to gently cup her small face. "Just like you don’t like it when I answer Irene Spencer’s calls, I also don’t want you to meet Nathan Leafcastle anymore. Promise me, don’t see him again, okay?"
Vera gazed into his eyes for a moment, then nodded solemnly. "Alright."
She, too, could sense that Nathan’s concern for her was far beyond ordinary. Now that she had chosen Kris, she shouldn’t let Nathan entertain any fantasies about her. Doing so would not only be irresponsible towards Kris but also hurtful to Nathan.
"Then, can I call him to explain? Just to get some closure."
After all, Nathan had been helping her, even going as far as inviting a doctor from America specifically to treat her. If she just cut off contact without any explanation, Vera would feel too guilty.
Kris frowned slightly.
She sidled closer, batting her large eyes at him pleadingly. "Honey, don’t be so petty, okay? I just want to call him. It’s not like I’ll lose a limb or anything... Just once... The very last time... Please?!"
Seeing the hope shining in the girl’s big eyes as she gazed at him, Kris finally relented, worn down by her pleading. He nodded.
Seeing the girl pull out her cell phone to make the call, he didn’t forget to reach out and gently pinch her cheek. "Let’s be clear, no more than five minutes!"
The girl gave him a playful salute and, clutching her phone, started to dash off.
"Where are you going?"
"Just over there to make the call..." Vera pouted. "Surely you’re not going to listen in, are you?"
Kris raised his wrist. "Timing starts now!"
She immediately stepped to the side and dialed Nathan Leafcastle’s number.
The call connected quickly. On the other end, a hint of pleasant surprise was audible in Nathan Leafcastle’s voice. "Vera?"
