Chapter 23: Chapter 23
Jane could hear the whispering as she and Marcus made their way to her office. The employees were in groups of two or more glaring and pointing at her. She was not invited to the usual Monday meetings and when she had gone for it she was asked to leave the conference hall.
“Well, today will be interesting.” She mumbled to herself when she entered her office.
“Yes, ma’am,” Marcus replied.
Mr. Robert matched into her office with two security behind him.
“There she is he said pointing at Jane.” The two security took a handcuff and went towards Jane. Marcus quickly pushed Jane behind him and stood in front of the securities.
“I am afraid you have to move sir.” One of the who seem to be the boss said in his thick German accent.
“I am afraid I cannot do that.” Marcus retorted.
“What is all this about?” Jane asked.
“You are being arrested for the murder of Suzan Jonas, you have the right-”
“Hold on,” Jane said cutting the security. “The murder of who?”
Both security men looked from Jane to Mr. Robert and then back to Jane. “Urr Suzan Jonas, your late personal assistant?” They replied skeptically.
“Oh,” Jane mumbled. “Well, then you should have a sit.” She said pushing past Marcus who didn’t want to let her pass to her seat
Both Marcus and the securities looked at her confused.
The puzzled securities frowned. “You do know we are here to arrest you for murder right?”
“Jane this is not one of your silly games, the company has decided to press charges for murdering Suzan!” Mr. Robert retorted vexed.
“The company or her sugar daddy?” Jane murmured. “Anyway, I understand this is a serious crime, I just want to call my father to tell him about the ‘Company's plan to arrest me.” Jane replied, spinning her chair. She placed her elbows on her desk and intertwined her fingers together. “You do know who my father is right, Luca?” She asked with a smirk on her face.
The Security who had been doing the talking, Luca whispered to his colleague, the colleague nodded and whispered back to Luca.
“Er, are you Sir. Morrison Davis kid?” Luca asked.
Jane snickered. “I am not sure, do you mean the Morrison with whose help you became lieutenant?”
Verzeihung Jane, I had no idea it was you, would you please forgive me?” Luca pleaded.
“What on earth is happening?!” Mr. Robert Scowled.
“I am sorry sir, but we cannot do are asking us to do, you have no evidence.” Luca replied putting the cuffs away
“What the hell are you talking about?!” Mr. Robert roared.
“You have to keep your voice down or you will be arrested for harassing a corp.” Luca snapped angrily.
“This is not over yet,” Mr. Robert growled at Jane, eyes glinting hard.
Jane smirked as Mr. Robert marched out of her office. “So, Lucs, how are your family and the boys?”
Luca grinned sheepishly. “They are doing just fine.” He replied.
“Alright, I will tell my father you said hi.” Jane said distracted by the ringing of her phone.
Thank you…” Luca replied.
Luca nodded toward Marcus and left.
I told you, sir, everything will be fine, and you do not have to worry.” Jane said into the phone.
“The hell I have to worry!” The voice on the order line yelled. You got Emilia stabbed and now you murder the assistant Berlin gave you, what is wrong with you?!”
Jane sighed. “You raised your voice at me and I will make sure you lose your job and never get any other job again.” She said softly into the phone. “Now I have work to do, I have no time to listen to what so ever you have to say.” Jane added and cut the call.
“Who is that?” Marcus asked staring at her curiously.
“The director in Austria.” She mumbled.
“What does he want?”
Jane smiled ruefully. “He said I already failed the job.”
Marcus stared at her compassionately.
“He is probably right.” She continued, unwelcome tears making their way to her cheeks.
Marcus walked over to where she was and pulled her to her feet. He held her face between his hands. “You are doing great Jane, never forget that.”
Jane nodded. “Can I hug you?” She asked shyly but couldn’t look down because of Marcus'’ hold of her face.
Marcus smiled. “Of course, you can.” He whispered.
Jane removed his hands from her face and wrapped her arms around his waist. Marcus stroked her hair softly. “It’s ten seconds already.” He said softly.
“Shh,” she whispered softly.
They stood that way for a few minutes taking in the smell of each other.
“You have to work Jane.” Marcus whispered in her ear.
“I do not want to.” Jane mumbled.
Marcus removed her hands from around his waist and held them. “You have to work.” He repeated.
“Okay.” Jane murmured glumly.
I will be right here watching you” he answered in a seductive purr.
Jane nodded and sat down to work.
Later that afternoon, Jane was making her way out of the building for her lunch she bumped into a woman with two beautiful girls.
“I am so sorry, ma’am I wasn’t watching where I am going.” The woman apologized.
Jane smiled at the woman. “No, I was distracted myself.” Jane mutter glancing at Marcus who smirked. “Do you work here?”
“No ma’am,” The woman replied.
Jane noticed the bruises on the woman’s face and frowned. “What happened to you?” She asked raising her hand to touch the woman’s face.
The woman pulled away, her eyes instantly became guarded and her smile was replaced by a doleful frown. “I am sorry ma’am but I have to go.” She said, pulling the hands of her children.
Jane held the woman’s arm. “Who did this to you?” She hissed.
Just then Mr. Robert’s voice came from the reception. “Mia!” He called. He then walked swiftly to the parking lot and yanked Jane’s hand from the woman.
“Do not touch her.” Mr. Robert snapped, his eyes burning with rage. He turned to the woman he called Mia. “I thought I asked you not to talk to strangers.” He hissed through his teeth. His glare was vicious.
“I am sorry, I was just apologizing for running into her.” The woman replied head down clearly afraid.
Most typical of you, pathetic!” Murmured his expression growing more resentful.
He glared at Jane and Marcus. “Stay away from my family or else…” He threatened.
He then turned to the woman and pulled her behind him. The woman looked back at Jane tears collecting in her eyes, Jane could see her eyes screaming for help.
Jane turned to Marcus. “We have to help that woman.” She said.
Marcus agreed.
* **
Unlike the usual lunch, Jane used to have with Suzan or Sophia where the talked about boys, complained about people they hate, and talked about more boys, this one was different. Different in the sense that instead of talking about boys, she was talking to a boy and instead of complaining about life, Marcus made her see things to be grateful for even if it seemed like her world is crumbling.
They were both leaning into each other on the table faces inches apart, food put aside.
“So what you are saying now is I should also be grateful for you?” Jane asked
“Why yes, if not for me you would have been kidnapped, slapped, killed, and even arrested today.”
Jane scoffed. “I had the arrest thing under control.” She said softly.
Marcus narrowed his eyes. Are you sure my torso wasn’t the source of your confident?
“Ha ha,” Jane said sitting upright.
Marcus mirror her position with a crooked grin plastered on his face. “So it's a yes?” He asked picking one of the biscuit breads that was served.
“I could have done the same thing whether you were there or not.” Jane said defensively.
Marcus twitched his lips to keep from smiling. “You act like a child.”
“That’s not true.” Jane objected.
Marcus raised his eyebrows.
“I don’t” She whined.
Marcus chuckled. “Yeah, because it is normal for accountants to whine the way you just did.” He said mockingly.
“You are unbelievable.” She mumbled.
“We should get back to the office.” He stated looking at his wristwatch.
“Say who?” Jane asked beaming.
Marcus crooked his eyebrows. “Why are you smiling?”
“Because I can.” Jane replied, looking at him with a mocking smile.
“You are being weird Jane, let’s go back to the office.” He said.
Jane pressed her lips together into a thin line to keep from laughing. “I am not going back.”
Marcus frowned. “You cannot work like that Jane, you—”
Jane shushed him. “Should I remind you who my father is?”
“You are abusing power.” Marcus muttered.
Jane took a deep sip with her straw making funny noises and glaring at Marcus.
“Are you always this weird?!” Marcus asked frustrated.
“Absolutely not.” Jane replied trying to look offended. “I am just taking your advice, I am being grateful for this glass of coke.” She had a crooked smile at the end of her sentence.
“Don’t go down that road.” He warned in a disapproving voice.
“Who is going to stop me?”
Marcus rolled his eyes. “But seriously, you should go back to work.”
“I am not going.” Jane said stubbornly.
“Alright fine!” Marcus said frustrated. “But at least let’s go back to get your things.” He suggested.
Jane groaned. “Alright fine.” She murmured.
