Chapter 13: Chapter 13

Jane was starting to wonder what made her think she could handle the problems in the company in Berlin. It'd been just a week and she had earned a bad reputation in the Company. Her assistant was in the hospital, Marcus was feeling depressed and homesick and she did nothing to ease his pain. As a matter of fact, she was half of his problems. The only good thing that was coming off from the whole situation was her friendship with Suzan. Suzan had been more helpful than Jane had thought she would be. And since Emilia was not in any condition to assist her, the company had let Suzan do the job.

Jane was in her office sipping from her already cold coffee staring at the screen of her laptop. Throughout the day she found herself drifting into thoughts of Emilia. She wasn't really sure why. Maybe it was the moody look Marcus wore every day because Emilia wasn't there to cheer him up. She sighed. She dropped the empty cup on the desk and rubbed her head as her phone rang. She picked up immediately and noticed it was Sophia.

"Hey, girl. I have missed you so much."

"Awwn, look who did not like spending time with me because 'I am too wild," Sophia laughed in mockery.

Jane rolled her eyes and smiled. "Don't be feeling yourself too much."

"I won't. So how is Berlin? Have you made out with Marcus yet?"

"No... I haven't."

"Why not?!"

"Umm...?" Jane could not keep it together anymore. She needed to vent, she needed to stop being all bossy and strong and be weak for once. And who else will understand her in moments like this if not Sophia?

Sophia noticed the sadness in Jane's voice almost immediately. They have been friends for long enough for Sophia to sense if there was a flaw in Jane's voice even if they were kilometres apart.

"Jane, are you okay?"

Jane sniffed and used the back of her hand to clean her tears. " I am losing it Sophy. I do not think I can take it anymore. Everybody in the office hates me, Emilia got stabbed, and ever since I slapped Marcus things -"

"Hold on!" Sophia interrupted. "You slapped Marcus?!!" Sophia could not believe her ear. She knew her friend could be all manner of evil but she never even imagined Jane would hit anyone.

Jane felt embarrassed. She shouldn't have done that and she knew that now. She might have gone a little overboard this time.

"Jane, I asked you a question. Did you or did you not slap your bodyguard?"

Jane shrugged."I did slap him." She mumbled.

"Oh, Lord." Sophia sounded like she had given up all hope on Jane. " Jane, no matter how angry you are, never, and I mean NEVER slap a man. Especially a man as fine as Marcus."

"Okay, I admit I went a little over the top. But that is not the point!" Jane felt her emotions building again.

"Emilia got stabbed for god-damned sake!"

Sophia sighed. "Jane I am sorry you have to go through this. I will love to tell you all the things I think will make you feel better but I know you will disagree."

Jane felt as though the weight on her shoulder got doubled but she managed to smile. "Thank you Sophy, you have already done enough for now."

Jane's eye caught the view of Marcus staring at her through her half-opened door. She cursed under her breath as she walked over to close it. Sophia had already ended the call and she was again left to deal with all the troubles life throws at her alone. She walked to the bathroom in her office to clean up the mess she made on her face while crying. She was just coming out of the bathroom when the ex Accountant of the company barged into her office with Marcus right behind him ready to take him down the moment he made the wrong move.

"Jane," The man sounded out of breath and tired. "Jane, you need to watch your back, things are not the way they appear to be."

"What are you talking about?" Her voice was so calm and in control as she walked to her desk and took her seat. She knew how to flip from any emotions to being bossy and in charge in seconds.

The man was about to reply when the CEO barged into the office with two security men behind him. "That's the man. That's the fraud,' the CEO Mr. Robert said pointing at the accountant.

Almost immediately the man was handcuffed and dragged outside. The commotion had drawn attention as other members of staff stood outside their office watching the accountant being dragged out as a criminal.

Mr. Robert adjusted his collar and forced a smile. "Sorry for the interruption," He said.

"What was that all about?" Jane asked. She was on her feet with Marcus standing right beside her.

"That man was the man we have been looking for," Mr. Robert sounded satisfied and smart. "You just witnessed the criminal we have been looking for arrested."

Something in the man's voice and smile made Jane question the whole thing. Just then Suzan ran into the office panting and went straight to Jane. "Are you okay? I heard what happened. Did that man try to hurt you?"

"No Suzan I am fine," Jane replied with a smile.

"Of course you are fine. Marcus was here to protect you." Susan's statement was just a matter-of-fact kind of statement but it made Jane feel funny.

"Yes," Jane mumbled. "He was here to save me because I am too weak to protect myself."

Mr. Robert cleared his throat and clapped his hands disrupting any conflict that was about to ignite between the two women. "Alright then, with that behind us, the company will like to thank you specially."

"For what?"

"Without your help, we would not have been able to catch the thief, you are a hero. So we shall throw you a small party on Saturday."
