Chapter 11: Chapter 11

Marcus was doing well in his verdict to avoid Jane. After the incident that happened the day before he had decided to keep his distance. He had decided that other than his work relationship with her, nothing will make him want to be around someone as goofy and ill-mannered as Jane.

Jane had decided that she was going clubbing that day and even though Marcus did not think it was a good idea to party the night before one starts work in a new place he did nothing to stop her.

“Jane is so irresponsible.” Emilia had whispered to him before he and Jane left the house.

Since Jane saw it unnecessary for Emilia to go with her to the club, she made her read and gather everything she could about the company and its employees. She wanted every information she could get before she starts work the next day.

Marcus was standing at the far end of the party hall watching as Jane and other rich kids waste money on expensive drinks and things he deemed unnecessary.

He watched dolefully as Jane saturated herself in the excitement of the party, gulping shots upon shots.

“Hey, pretty boy.” A girl he guess would be about the same age as Jane said grinning from ear to ear with a bottle of champagne in her right hand.

Marcus nodded and forced a smile at her. He wasn’t really in the mood for flirting or making friends at the moment. All he wanted was for him to finish whatever work brought him to Berlin and leave without breaking.

The girl look intently at him from the top of his head to the tip of his toes and smiled seductively as she traced Marcus' right cheekbone with the tip of her long manicured nails.

“Let me make you happy” She whispered in his ear.

Marcus carefully removed her hand from his face and shifted. “I am really sorry milady but I am here to work not to mingle or make friends.

The girl slouched and took a step backwards as she sipped from her bottle of champagne. “What kind of work?”

“I am a bodyguard,” Marcus said firmly raising his head and shoulder higher.

“What?!” The girl exclaimed more in disappointment than in shock. “Who would want to turn a fine man like you into a bodyguard? I would rather you destroy my body than protect it.”

Marcus did not know how to respond.

“I believe your boss is gay and he is just –”

“Excuse me drunkard but this is my personal bodyguard and he is not here to keep you company.”

Marcus stared at Jane weirdly.

She did well to avoid eye contact with him but he could trace the feeling of jealousy in her voice.

"Oh, it's the whore, Ava." Jane laughed sarcastically.

The girl frown. She looked at Jane and then Marcus and then Jane again. She then burst into laughter.

"You work for this weakling?" Her voice held mockery and arrogance.

"Ma'am I think we should go," Marcus said sensing the tension building between the two women.

"No pretty boy," Ava said pulling Marcus' hand. You need to hear the story of how and why Cletus left this bitch to be with me."

Before Marcus could make sense of what was happening Jane and Ava were exchanging punches. He quickly carried Jane up on his shoulder and rushed to their waiting ride.

Jane didn't stop hitting and fighting Marcus to let her go fight with Ava. When he finally dropped her in the car and the driver drove off, she sneered at Marcus.

" Keep in mind that I do not pay you to socialize or go digging my past. You have one job, just one job which is to keep me safe and if you cannot do that get the hell out of my car."

Marcus was dumbfounded. He stared at Jane in pure terror. Every day Jane found new ways to show how insolent and arrogant she was. Without saying a word he turned away so he was not looking at her.

His head was spinning. He was fuming with anger. He felt foolish for ever thinking he liked her. No matter how faultless her face and body were, she can never be the kind of girl he will like. He hated himself more as memories of all the times he had tried to show he was feeling her.

He was so engrossed in his anger he did not notice Jane sniffing. A few minutes after the driver pulled over to their house Jane was still seated in the car crying.

Marcus stared at her and all he could think of was how angry he was. He would have loved to comfort her but he did not deem it fit. "She will only use it against me and make my life more miserable when she feels better." He mumbled to himself.

"Don't you have somewhere to be?!" She yelled as she saw Marcus was not leaving the car either.

Marcus took the opportunity and left immediately. " With pleasure." She mumbled again and left.

Marcus woke up the next morning and at first couldn't explain why his head was banging so hard and why he was still in the tuxedo he wore for work the day before and why his shoe and diamond earring were still on.

He stared at the bottles of vodka on the bed at first surprised and then disappointed. He only wanted a few drinks to clear his mind but then a few more needed to be added before he knew what he was doing he had drank 6 bottles to forget all his trouble and his aching heart.

It was just 7 am which gave him more time to correct his day before Jane would try killing him with her insensitive behaviours.

He meditated for a while. A practice he had come to love during his partnership with Brian.

The cook was in the kitchen already making breakfast but Marcus wanted to cook for himself. He made pancakes and herbal tea. After eating he worked out and then cleaned himself.

He was sitting in the living room sipping his last remaining cup of tea when Jane came down the stairs with Emilia trailing behind her.

"Good morning Jane." He greeted.

"Marcus try staying out of trouble today. Don't go around sticking your nose in other people's business. Stay in your lane." Jane said as she left the room.

"Lord, please give me strength," Marcus mumbled as he slowly stood up and follow her.
