Chapter 40: Chapter 40

Trish appears behind me, draping her arm around my shoulder to comfort me.

"It's horrible, isn't it?" She sniffles, her words a soft murmur. I nod, unable to open my mouth to respond to her. Everywhere I go, I think of Ivory and where she might be. Every day, Myra rings the police station countless times to see if there's an update on her case. Jake is right, the police aren't helpful when it comes to the important stuff.

"Every time I walk in class, I expect her to be sat there, big grin on her face." Trisha murmurs, her voice sad.

"Most of the time she was hungover from the night before," I reply, chuckling dryly at the memories. Beside me, Trish laughs quietly, her eyes filling with unshed tears. I squeeze her shoulder comfortingly —

"Come on, let's get to class."

She nods, agreeing with my words and the two of us began to walk in the direction of our classroom.

"Urgh, snake alert." Trish mumbles, nudging me slightly in the ribs. I look up at the direction she's pointing in and an immediate scowl fills my features.

"What do you want?" I sigh, stopping in my tracks as Violet comes face to face with us. Trish and I stand up straighter, our heads held high as we glare into Violet's eyes. They appear red and puffy, almost as if she spent her weekend crying endlessly.

"How is he?" She sniffles. I frown at her question, my eyebrows scrunching up unattractively.

"How is who?" I ask, taking a step back from her. I haven't forgot the way she kissed Jake or the multiple threats to break up apart.

"Jake? Duh?" She responds instantly, her eyes darkening. My eyebrows shoot up in surprise and I let out a scoff —

"Is that why you've been crying? Because of Jake?" I question, shaking my head in disbelief. Her lips curled in a sneer and she hastily wipes at her eyes.

"I care about him!" She snaps, stomping her foot onto the floor like a toddler.

"He doesn't care about you, I'm not surprised considering you act like a five year old." I respond.

"You're such a bitch." Violet sneers, taking a threatening step forward. My eyebrow shoot up higher in shock at her sudden confidence and I struggle to stop myself from laughing at her ridiculous behaviour.

Trish immediately stands in front of me, creating distance between Violet and I. A small smile plays on my lips at her protective behaviour.

"You better back the hell up before I drag you away by your hair." Trish snaps at her, her voice full of anger. I place a hand on Trish's shoulder, letting her know I don't need her protection.

"She's not worth it Trish," I tell her truthfully, shooting Violet another dirty look. Trish huffs beside me, her eyes never once leaving Violet. I gently pry her away, walking in the direction of class.

"You should have let me at her," Trish mumbles unhappily as we create distance between us. I roll my eyes, a smile on my face at her stubborn behaviour — "Like I said Trish, she's not worth it.”
