Chapter 27: Chapter 27

" So... Mr Richardson is it?... I reckon it'd be best for me and you if you would just be a good rich person that you are, and own up to your deeds. No games, we can all go our separate ways" Inspector Roosen stated in an indignant just as she the door to the interrogation room shut close behind her. She walked towards the sit on the other end of the sturdy iron table in the middle of the room.

Bob who had raised his head to see who had entered the room silently watched as the lady with dark short brown hair of average height propped herself into the seat on the other end of the table between them.

" You killed that man didn't you?"

Bob's heart sank!

He realized a little too late that what had happened was a trap that was all setup by Courtney, just as the incident between himself and that strange lady back then in their house.

' Damn that bitch!... This is all her doing. B-but how am I to tell this to the police without sounding like I'm trying to push the blame on someone else and proving insane. I literally possess no evidence...' Bob panicked in thought over this fact again. This was all he'd been thinking all along even before inspector Roosens came into the room to conduct the interrogation.

He tried as much as he could to think and reflect before he said anything to these people if he had to. Or he could be very well sending himself to lifetime jail.

First, he had to tell everything that had happened in sequence to this person. The only thought that came to his mind was this, nothing else. A murder charge was too much to bare for Bob currently, and he felt so overwhelmed that he started to speak with a sense of urgency.

" Look, I-I'll tell you everything that had happened in there okay? I swear that I was only in there at the wrong moment. Why would I make the attempt to call the emergency line and stay to help him?" Bob tried to persuade inspector Roosens as he pressed his palm forward on the table, as if to assure the lady cop.

" Give it up already. We know you killed the man because your wife has been having an affair with him. Isn't that right?" Detective Roosen corked her head to the side and gave Bob a piercing glance. With years of experience, she had been able to make a conjecture from the information that had been given to her by detective Taylor beforehand.

Detective Taylor standing outside the interrogation room, watching through the one-way mirror as his boss and partner conducted the interrogation, couldn't help but shake his head. This was what she meant earlier by saying she already had an understanding of the case premise?

" N-no, that's not how it is!" Bob shook his head with panic and distress evident in his gaze. He stared at a loss on the table as a thought occured to him.

That... That's what Courtney was after! Bob kept falling deeper and deeper in the rabbithole.

That wench had planned this whole thing ever since she came to that hotel room? Bob sucked in a deep breath. Isn't he just done for?

" Well, this case is as much as closed with that look on your face, Mr Richardson. You might as well confess now..." The Inspector crossed her arms and rested her back on the iron chair she sat on as she said with a creased gaze.

Bob jump out of his thoughts, startled at her words.

Does this mean Courtney had fabricated other evidence to make him the criminal? was he going to be charged to court then, is that it?

" But, I could do with a little bit of some story. How about you tell me yours?" Inspector Roosen asked with a mischievous smile worn on her mature face.

Bob lowered his head to gather his thoughts. What was this? How could he have been so stupid to not have caught on to his Courtney scheme? It was all plain and glaring that they were both on end terms, and she would do anything, literally anything to strip him off of everything he had. Bob now understood clearly what Courtney's motive is.

" I-it all started with her coming to my hotel room... where I stayed since we're going through a divorce trial at the moment..." Bob started to speak in a rueful manner which sounded more as though he was reliving his mistakes up to this point, hoping to figure out if there was a way out, any at all.

" W-we had sex and she told me the name of our child's biological father, as well as where she lived. I had prepared to go talk to Mr Adam for the sake of our child and although I knew it was dangerous, I still had gone thinking I could just-"

Bob suddenly remembered something that he'd been so overwhelmed by the thought of going to jail and losing everything he had, that he forgot to even think of.

" That's right! phone record!" Bob suddenly exclaimed out loud, leaving detective Roosen baffled.

" Yes, yes! I had my phone recording the whole time I was in his apartment. I had went to Shenandoah Drive E to ask Mr Adam if he knew about Charlotte after all and had put my phone on audio recording with the hope that I'd get him to make a statement that I could use as an evidence in court." Bob rambled in delight, breaking into a frenzy of hope as he spoke.

Inspector Roosen gave a glance to the window and frowned upon realizing something. " Charlotte? you mean your child?"

" No, she isn't mine. I realized this and then I thought I could make Mr Adam help me out in my divorce case and hopefully, reunite with Charlotte as her biological father" Bob explained in a fit of chuckle, he kicked his head back and held his face in his palm.

Inspector Roosen kept an arm folded across her unimpressive chest while raising the other vertically to put a finger on her chin in thought.

" This is getting a little interesting..." She muttered.

" I'm telling you, this is all a setup!" Bob yelled with arms spread at the inspector. " Please help me! I'm being honest!" At this point Bob held his palm together in front of him, literally begging. He knew Courtney wouldn't approach the police to bribe them as that might as well be her making a confession, hence, he believed the inspector could help him out.

Inspector Roosen was silent for a while and just watched Bob with a thought in her mind.

' He's either a very good actor and a manipulative criminal... Or he's telling the truth!'

" In the first instance, how did you know this man is the father of the child?" she asked.

" I had found a hidden conversation. And she confirmed this by telling me. It didn't occur to me why she would but now it's clear." Bob stated staring at his hands, he didn't want to expose the fact that he already had a DNA test result proving this.

" I mean, it's obvious right? why would she do that knowing i had asked the court to disprove paternity of the child. It all adds up to this event of Mr Adam's death" Bob added to convince the inspector.

" Hmm..." Detective Roosen hummed, seemingly convinced.

" Inspector!" The sound system in the room suddenly resounded and Inspector Roosen who still stared at Bob in thought rose after a while and left the room without saying anything.

Bob was left uncertain, his heart pounded in panic in the oblivion of what the future holds for him. He realized he certainly couldn't do this alone, he needed his lawyer.

' I'll make a request for my attorney as soon as they return...' Bob made a mental note, knowing it was probably the best thing he could do. He hoped they find the audio record and that Courtney hadn't paid someone to delete it. This was his only hope of getting out of this...

" His phone" Detective Taylor who stood beside some other cop in police uniform.

After hearing Bob's claims, he had called for someone to bring the "Exhibit". He'd immediately looked for the audio record and having found it, he had turned on the mic to the interrogation room to inform inspector Roosens.

" He might be telling the truth" Detective Taylor said with a frank frown on his face as he handed out the phone.
