Chapter 31: Chapter 31
After muttering words under her breath, she released Lisa's hands, stood on her short legs and went into a small room covered with a small curtain with a promise to return.
"I don't like this," Adam voiced out his displeasure about the whole ordeal.
"Hush." His wife tossed a glare at him and held a finger to her lips.
The old woman, whose name Adam didn't know, and didn't care to know came out of her inner shrine with two cups of tea. She extended them to Heartman and Lisa and Lisa didn't hesitate to take hers while Adam looked pointedly at the old woman, clearly unimpressed.
"Adam." Lisa glowered at him and he reluctantly took it, rolling his eyes.
He drank it cautiously, while staring deeply into the eyes of the old woman in a somewhat threatening manner.
It really tasted nice and Adam began to think it wasn't just tea anymore.
When they were done with their tea, the old woman took the empty cups and sat in a chair that had seen better days.
She took Lisa's hands in hers again and began to do some incantations while looking into the cups. Lisa shut her eyes like a very dedicated disciple and Adam just couldn't wait for the whole charade to be over.
"Hmm," the seer said, adjusting in the seat and it made a loud creaking sound.
Adam was bored of the whole show and would have loved to be anywhere else but there at the moment.
"I can see..." The old woman, trailed off.
"See what?" Lisa asked in anticipation.
Adam folded his arms against his chest and almost swore under his breath, only holding back for Lisa's sake as he didn't want to offend her.
He felt the temperature rise after a couple of minutes but he wasn't sure if he was imagining it all or if it was because the old woman's voice had gone considerably higher.
"I see a demon." She finally announced and that got Adam's attention.
"Where?" Lisa asked, snapping her eyes open with panic in her eyes.
"In the palace," the old woman finally said and that scared Lisa to no ends.
"How, why?" Lisa asked, taking in deep breaths to calm her racing heart.
"That I do not know, child,"
The seer said in a motherly tone.
"What can we do?"
Adam asked equally alerted.
"You must return at once,"
She informed themand her tone dropped lower than needed.
"We can't," Adam said, already regretting asking what could be done.
"We will," Lisa said sternly, her gaze still trained at the woman.
••••••••••
After leaving the shrine, they headed back to their hotel rooms.
Lisa was worried sick and she began to regret ever leaving the palace in the first place.
If what the seer said was true then Alex could be in grave danger and they would be too far away to even save their baby.
Lisa loved her son but she wasn't sure if he did same with her.
She felt her palms begin to sweat as she paced the room, thinking deeply about just how much trouble Alex could be in that hour.
"Lisa can you please stop pacing and sit down?" Adam asked his wife as he watched her pacing from the moment they had returned to their hotel room.
"Don't tell me to sit down, Adam. Our son's life is in danger. I knew we should never have left." Her voice broke as she held her head, and it hurt Adam that she was already regretting this tour even before it ended.
"We leave tomorrow," Liz said in finality.
"What?" Adam was a bit surprised. He knew they had to return back but so soon?
"Yes, you heard me right."
"Don't you think you're being a bit rash?"
"Rash you say? Did you say rash when it's about the only child I have left?"
"You know that's not what I meant." Adam was already getting frustrated. "And besides, how can we even trust the seer?" He tried to reason with her.
"Yes, we can and will. I felt the energy around her," Lisa said with a lot of boldness.
"What if she was lying, Liz?"
Adam's forehead creased into a deep frown.
"At least, I would no longer have to worry about our child's safety,"
She said while she sat on the bed with her husband.
"I know we haven't been able to spend enough time together and we just caught a break after so many years," she began soothingly, holding his hands in hers as she stared deeply and affectionately at him, "But we need to be there for him even if we weren't in his childhood, at least, we should be now."
Adam sighed heavily in both disappointment and agreement. "Promise we'd do this again and I'll agree we leave."
Lisa smiled fondly at him. He was such a big baby.
"I promise," she grinned and kissed the back of his hands.
Adam smiled back, also kissing the back of her hands.
"I love you," he professed, for the umpteenth time that week.
She chuckled lightly and place a delicate kiss on his lips. "I love you even more."
Adam loved hearing those words from her.
"Do we have to leave tomorrow though?" Adam tried bargaining. He desperately wanted more time with his woman.
"Adam..." She cautioned playfully, "You can't convince me otherwise."
Adam knew she was right.
Still playing with his hand, she said regretfully, "We did wrong by him, Adam."
She regretted how they had neglected and pushed him aside all those years to attend to the matters of the state.
Alex had locked himself in his room day and night, and hadn't even noticed on time as she was always at some stupid meetings with the women in the pack, preparing for one celebration or the other. By the time she finally realized, it was already too far gone and she could no longer reach him no matter how hard she tried.
Then, he started seeing impossible things and they sent him to that crazy psychologist who Hendrix referred them to.
She hadn't even done a background check on the woman whose care she had put her only child. Instead, she had trusted Hendrix to do so. When she found out the psychiatrist was crazy, it was already too late.
"I know, love. We'll make things right this time." Adam promised but Lisa hardly believed him. He mostly made promises he couldn't keep.
