Chapter 21: Chapter 21
Copper
At first glance, she seemed like a simple lady with an outfit that covered her from head to toe. She had a small, round, childlike face that suited her big eyes. The makeup that she chose suited her facial features and added to that look of innocence with a sprinkle of maturity. Darling Stark, was it? I wonder why she's here.
Darling brushed her wavy, black hair over her shoulder. I offered her the same smile I gave everyone else. "Nice to meet you, Darling. I haven't seen you before, are you from this area?"
She shakes her head. "Not entirely. I was away for a little while, but I'm thinking of moving back soon. I hope that's no trouble to you, Miss Harmony."
I raised my eyebrow. Why would that be a problem for me? I barely know her.
"I can see you're confused." Georgina touches Darling's shoulder. "This here is Kenny's old love, the one whose place you're occupying right now."
Darlng's smile broadened. "Yes, I can't wait to be reunited with him! I was hoping to see him today but, I guess it can't be helped if he's busy."
"Oh, don't mind my rude son dear. I assure you he would have loved to see you too."
Darling looks up as if she can't believe what she's hearing. "Do you mean that?"
"Absolutely!" Kenny's father was the one to reply. "Just because he stopped talking to you doesn't mean he no longer cares about you. Every time I tell him how you're doing he pretends he's not listening but I can see his how his face lights up.
She blushes and looks away. "I... I still like him a lot too."
I considered the scene in front of me to be a strange sight. Kenny's family seem to like her and from what I hear they seem to still have feelings for each other. Is that why they were having trouble getting him to marry? If so, then why don't they marry each other? She seems nice enough and things wouldn't have to be this complicated.
"We're helping Darling reach her ambitions," Georgina continues. "If she does well, she'll be a part of the Greenland Household."
Ah! So they're helping her raise her stature first before having her marry Kenny. She's probably not from an ultra-rich family or else they wouldn't be doing this. That makes sense."
I stood up and held one of Darling's hands to shake. "That's good! I hope you accomplish all that you set out to do."
Her smile cracks briefly before appearing on her face again. "The same goes for you, Miss Harmony."
I nodded and retreated back to my seat. Knowing that there is a girl that will take my place makes me feel more comfortable. Maybe I'll get out of this marriage sooner than two years. I also didn't mind if she calls me Miss Harmony instead of Mrs. Greenland. It makes me feel more relaxed.
Maybe we can even be friends. Sher doesn't want to be friends with me. I need them since I've pretty much left everything behind.
I met the Allisons again, went on a walk with Georgina and Kenny's little, then returned to the house since Stanford called and said dinner would be ready in an hour.
Like the last time I was at one of the Greenlands' houses, I took a walk upstairs by myself. Observing the land from this height provided me with an even more beautiful view. This hall had a large window after every column, windows that were bigger than me.
"Oh look at that!" I looked up as someone approached me. "We happen to have had the same idea."
Darling walks up to me with her hands behind her back. She's shorter than me, that's for sure. She and Kenny would make a cute couple with their height difference. RIP for his back, though.
"I guess so." I smiled. "Did you want to take a break as well?"
"Yes, but I mostly came for you. You looked so out of place that I thought you must have gone into a corner to cry. I'm glad to see that's not the case."
My eyebrows furrowed. That's an odd thing to say. Did I really seem that out of place? I thought I carried myself smoothly.
"No, I'm perfectly fine. I actually had fun talking to Kenny's mother about the current shift in fashion. It did get a bit awkward when she asked if Kenny and I slept together," I giggled.
"Yeah, that's impossible."
"I know right!" I nodded, agreeing.
"Because you're not Kenny." The smile slips from her face as she tilts her head and stares at me. "No background, too boring, you're way too fat. Not to mention that awful blond streak in your hair. What are you, An employee at Hot Topics?"
The smile left my face as well. Oh, so this is how it is. I'm not fat, but I'm also not skinny. I have enough fat in me to protect my organs. My skin is a tad more tan than everyone here, mostly because I liked to run around to get my mind off things when I was living with my parents. Plus, I love my complexion and my blond streak. they're a part of me and I wouldn't change them for the world.
So what right does she have to criticize them?
"No, Darling, you know exactly who I am." I held my chin high. "And that's pretty rude of you. It doesn't suit you at all. Are you always like this, or only when the Greenlands are not around?"
She rolls her eyes. "Whatever. Anyway, Kenny would never sleep with you. How can he in good condense when he's obsessed with me."
"Obsessed in what context, cause I don't see anything to obsess over."
Darling steps closer until we're a foot apart. She taps her chin with her forefinger.
"You know, I could have had him if I wanted to. But because I respect the Greenlands and everything they've worked for, I told them that I wanted to raise my status instead, to be worthy of someone like Kenny. My parents are pretty set financially, but they don't have much of a presence in the business world. Just like you wouldn't have a presence if it wasn't for your grandfather taking pity on you."
"Good for you, I guess. But you should know by now that I don't really care. Besides, it seems to me that you're the one who's obsessed with Kenny and not the other way around. Your attitude right now? It's giving... 'I'm desperate'."
Darling frowns. "Don't you dare talk back to me. In this house, you're the one intruding and I'm the precious family guest. Who's side do you think the family will take if they see us arguing? We don't know much about this world, do you? What a pity Mr. Harmony has you for a granddaughter. Your parents must be happy that you left-"
"You see, here's the thing, Darling Stark. Or should I say 'Miss Stark' to remind you that you're not yet a member of this family?" I cut her off. Despite her harsh insults, I'm determined to keep my dignity intact. I folded my arms, mocking her movements by placing a finger on the tip of my chin. "I don't care. I'm only here for one reason and one reason only. To be Kenny's wife. Not to fuck him or to have his babies. If you want to gobble on his penis, that's your problem. This mean girl act is beneath me. It should have been beneath you too, but I guess not. If you said you liked sour candy, I'd believe it because you share the same flavor. The Greenlands has already made it clear that you're going to be his wife, so if I were you, I'd stop acting like a fool. Let's make one thing clear, Miss Stark."
I stared directly into her eyes.
"I'm not going anywhere until the appointed time, and I'm not going to stand for your bullshit. It smells."
