Chapter 20: Chapter 20

Kenny

While Copper met with her grandfather, I went to the sunroom and looked at the information my assistant sent me.

Attached to his text is a link. I clicked on it.

It brought me to a video. In it, the same woman who appeared at my wedding, whose name I don't even know, was kicked out of my family house that my father and his wife still live in. The people kicking them out are members of the security force hired by my family.

The angle makes it look like a drone took a video. Anyone would think that the drone belongs to the press. Which makes sense. But I don't have the same thought. To me, all I see are my enemies working hard to take down my name. I can't wait to see who's behind this so that I can give them a very friendly slap on the face.

I told my assistant to fire a private investigator without my father knowing. Just then, Copper enters the sunroom.

"You're done here?" I look up and see the state of her face. Her eyes were red and slightly puffy. Her cheeks are also flushed.

"Yes." She wipes her face then puts on a smile. "Let's go."

Copper

Staying in the house with Kenny becomes easier as the days go by. We maintain basic respect, which is all that I can ask for. He's gone to work most of the day, and we eat at the same time every once in a while, but it feels calm.

At least he's acting more mature compared to when we first met. Maybe this arrangement can work after all.

During the week, my grandfather's assistant, Sher, brings me the things I need for school.

I pull out the teal and black plaid skirt. My lips twitched. "Do I have to wear this?"

"If you don't want to be written up for a warning," She says. "Yes."

While grumbling under my breath, I take in Sher.

She has her black hair formed into a tight bun, and her aura and dark lips tell me that she's someone who takes her profession very seriously. Maybe that's why he sent her to inform me of what to know in the first place.

"Your class is class 4-C." Sher taps her tablets. "If you need anything else, tell me directly. You won't need to call Mr. Harmony."

"But I don't have your number-"

Right as I said that, Sher took my phone, put her number in, then handed the phone back to me, doing all this without looking me in the eye.

"Sher."

"Hm?"

"Look me in the eyes."

Sher looks at me, but not in my face. "Why? There are more important things we need to do."

Without waiting for her permission, I held her face and made her look at me. I tilted my head back and forth, making her follow my gaze. Only then did I let her go.

Sher straightens her sleeveless formal button-up white shirt. "What was the point of that?"

I shrugged. "During the entire time you've been here, you've never once looked me in the eyes."

"That... might be true." She admits. "I haven't realized it. Sorry if that offends you."

"No, it doesn't, not really. It's just..." I fall on the bed, causing it to bounce with me. "It's just that you are the only girl I've seen here in a while. It would feel good if we could get along."

Sher tilts her head to the left, eyebrows furrowed. "I don't see an issue. Aren't we getting along enough?"

I shook my head. "No, but nevermind. You probably don't get what I mean."

"Of course I do." Sher chuckles. "But I'm pretending I don't to make fun of you."

My mouth dropped open while a cocky smirk formed on hers. "Sher!"

"Yes, I know that's my name." Sher shakes her head and turns back to her tablet, smile still on her lips. "Now let's continue. Keep to yourself and talk as little as possible. That doesn't mean you can't interact, but don't go searching for those interactions yourself."

She goes on about things I shouldn't have to remember. No matter how high-end my new school will be, I hope it won't be as bad as my old school.

The weekend came by and we received an invitation to go to Kenny's family home for an early dinner. I heard that a guest will be there as well.

The outfit I chose was a short-sleeved emerald green blouse and a black skirt. Seeing as I have no idea who this guest might be, I figured dressing semi-formally would help in making a good first impression. I'm not only representing the Greenlands, I'm also representing the Harmony Household.

"Are you sure they won't be upset if you come in late?" I said, putting on pearl earrings. My braided hair fell down my back. "They're probably looking forward to seeing you more than me."

"I have some things to take care of. And I know them. My parents won't start dinner until hours later." Andrew runs his hand over his black, polo shirt. "By that time, I should be done. In the meantime, you simply woo them like you've always done."

I rolled my eyes. "It's almost like you want them to like me."

"Not a chance."

"Whatever." I chuckled.

After we gathered what we needed, we walked to the front door and reached for the knob at the same time. This ended up with us making skin contact.

We looked at each other.

"You can go first," he said.

"No, it's okay if you open it. I'm sure you're in a rush to get to where you need to be."

In the end, Mary Sue was the one to open the door. Thankfully, she saved us before things could get more awkward. I mouthed her a "thank you and hurried outside to my car.

"Have a good day at work, even though you should be allowing yourself to rest on the weekends," I called out to Kenny as I unlocked the driver's door.

He stood next to his vehicle with an expression I couldn't quite interpret. All he said was, "Thanks", then got into his vehicle.

Although it didn't seem like much, it did make me smile as I whispered a "you're welcome" that he'll never get to hear. I'd prefer it if things remain like this, where we can be civil to each other while still maintaining our space.

I should have known that this peace would only last for a little while.

The guards that came with me stayed outside while a butler led me to the sitting room. That's where I found Kenny's parents, stepmother, and the rest of his family deep in discussion.

"Honey," Kenny's mother approached me and gave me a hug. "Glad to see you're here, even when my own son refuses to make time for us."

"Oh, come on, it's not like that." A polite smile forms on my face. "He just has a lot on his plate, otherwise he would have come with me."

"Of course you'd say that. You're his wife."

We laughed, and I greeted every else who was there before taking a seat on an empty couch. All except a girl a girl my age sitting close to Catherine.

"Right, allow me to introduce you two." Georgina motioned to her. "Copper, this is Darling Stark. Darling, this is Copper Harmony, Sylvester's long-lost granddaughter and Kenny's current wife."

My expression continued to appear respectful, but in my mind, I couldn't help analyzing her words. Current? Why did she feel the need to add that when she was introducing me to this girl?
