Chapter 31: Chapter 31

Niah tightened her grip on my shirt. It was not my first time seeing an awful sight of mounds of skeletons, but I guess it’s her first.

“Do you know this place?” I asked.

I gulped as sweat soaked the back of my shirt, though the humidity was freezing. The place felt like poltergeists haunted it for a very long time.

“I-I do not know…”

Why is there a basement under the library? Who else knew this place? Who are these corpses?

I looked intently at Niah as I held her cheeks. Her eyes were on the verge of crying.

“Listen. Pull yourself together. We have to get out of here as soon as possible before anyone notices our disappearance, especially Luxferre and Vad,” I said.

I hugged her and caressed her back.

“Calm down. I’m here, you’re not alone. Remember that you are the chosen one. You need to be strong for your people.”

Her heart throbbed loudly against mine. Before I knew it, she fell asleep in my arms.

I sighed.

A lot of questions have occupied the space in my head. But one thing is for sure, someone evil is behind these. That person knew this place, and the first person I can think of is Luxferre. He literally spends most of his time protecting the book of enchantment. He can manipulate his people because he is their hero.

After an hour, Niah woke up. She rubbed her eyes and gazed at me.

“Are you alright?” I asked.

She nodded.

“The book of enchantment is our last resort. Teach me how to do magic.”

We stood up and grabbed the book. The writings were unfamiliar to me, but Niah can read them. She scanned the book to find a spell that would help me see evil spirits.

“Here it is,” she said, and glued her eyes to the middle page.

“In order to make this work, close your eyes and chant the spell inside your mind. But you have to remain focused. It will not be easy,” she added.

I know everything won’t be easy, but I have to take this seriously because our lives are on the line.

I closed my eyes and repeated the chant in my head. It was hard to memorize it because it’s in Latin words. I’ve stuttered countless times and bit my tongue. The stinky odor of the place made it even harder for me to concentrate.

“Focus!”

I opened my eyes when I heard a familiar voice. It’s Osca, again. It surprised me to hear his voice more often than usual. His words motivated me to never give up.

I closed my eyes and heaved a sigh. My troubled heart seized on pounding swiftly. In slow motion, I fluently uttered the chant.

My body elevated when a potent force entered my body. My lungs suffocated for ten seconds and I thought I was about to face death. I held my neck to grasp for air. Niah was shocked and unable to move. She’s clueless of what’s happening to me.

“Kylo…”

She could only call my name with a shaky voice.

The floor cracked when my body dropped on it. Niah came to me and lifted me to see my condition. My eyes were half opened and my body felt sour like a group of bad guys beat me to a pulp.

“What have I done? You have bruises,” she said.

She sniffed and wiped her tears away. It was the last sight I’ve seen before I lost consciousness.

A breath of fresh air awakened me. My blurry vision became clear as I saw the pleasant blue sky and sunlight striking my face. A hand appeared above my face and shaded me from the heat of the sun.

I sat up and saw his angelic face. Osca smiled at me and lent his hand. I took his delicate hand and was mesmerized. My eyes gazed at his handsome face.

“It’s been a long time, Kylo. You’ve been having a hard time,” he said.

I smiled bitterly.

“You knew it all along, but you did not help me.”

“I’m not in the right position to make things easier for you. This is your fight.”

“Then, at least tell me who the enemy is.”

“I would have told you if I had known. I only take orders from above. I know little.”

I sighed and roamed my eyes. We were on a beach. The waves were calm, and the wind was gentle. I was in my original form because I was in my dream state.

“Do you know someone named Racan?” I asked.

He stared at me with a surprised look on his face.

“Who?”

“Racan,” I repeated.

“How did you know about him?”

“So you know him?”

He paused for a while.

“He’s an archangel like me. I haven’t seen him for a long time, but I heard he failed to do his mission.”

I was taken aback.

“An angel? That’s odd. Luxferre said that Racan was an Animie who cursed their land and ran away with a mortal. He abused the book of enchantment and used its power for his own greed. He fell in love with a mortal and left the portal.”

His brows furrowed.

“That’s not possible. Racan will never do that. He will never abuse magic because angels can’t use magic from the other world. They have their own power. Also, angels can’t fall in love with a mortal.”

“But how--”

“Kylo!”

Niah’s face welcomed me. My dream was like a nap, it’s too short. I stood up and stared blankly at the floor.

“We have to get out of here now. Look for a spell that can teleport us back,” I said.

“What’s wrong?”

“We have to hurry. I have to talk to Vad.”

Niah searched through each page. My heart was in panic again. Wagner has to know what Osca told me. Only he can figure things out.

“I found it,” Niah said.

I snapped out of my thoughts and glanced at her.

“Like what you did before… you need to concentrate while chanting the spell. Be careful. You might actually die if you can’t fight the massive force. Are you sure about this?” she said with agitation evident in her voice.

I nodded. I closed my eyes and prepared myself.

She suddenly hugged me.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“We have to be like this so the both of us could teleport.”

“Oh, okay.”

She chanted the spell, and I repeated it inside my head. I was more eager this time.

Both of us elevated as an aggressive force entered my body. I hugged her tightly as I ached in pain. My jaw tightened as I controlled myself from collapsing. I can’t lose strength and miss this chance.

A few minutes passed by before our body touched the ground. I panted as my body rolled down. We’re back in the garden.

“Kylo! Are you alright?”

Niah tapped my face.

“My bones…” I uttered.

“What about it?”

She looked worried.

“All of it… are still intact.”

“I thought…”

She suddenly punched my chest.

“Aww! What’s wrong with you?”

“Don’t scare me like that again!” she hissed.

I chuckled.

“Is this funny to you? Huh? Unbelievable!” she blurted out.

I stood up and helped her stand up. I cleaned the dirt on her dress.

“Let’s go find Vad,” I said and held her hand.

We were about to get inside the mansion when the door opened, and Luxferre came out.

“Niah. I’ve been looking for you. It’s time to go,” he said.

I gazed at Niah. And she’s obviously not ready to go. She’s scared.

“Hang in there. If something goes wrong, expect me to be there. You’ll be fine,” I said.

I was not sure about the words that came out of my mouth. There’s not a safe place if it’s with Luxferre.

She let go of my hand and joined his company. As they turned their backs on me, my head hurt and a buzzing sound came through my head. I was deaf for a couple of seconds. When my sanity came back, I looked at Luxferre.

I saw white lights flowing from him. It’s strange… I thought black and blue auras are the signs of evil? Why is it like this? Is there something wrong with me?
