Chapter 67: Chapter 67
Lana snapped out of her daze and gave a cheerful smile. "Hello... It’s a pleasure to meet you, mister..."
"Lucian." A sly smile was playing on Lucian’s lips as if he could see through Lana’s inner thoughts.
With the previous life’s experience, Lana remained steady and composed under the inquisitive gaze.
"Mr. Lucian." Lana finished her words, her steps slowly closing the distance between them, careful and measured.
With a composed expression, she turned her gaze to Nixon and asked, "Where are the files?"
Nixon handed her the folder he was reading and explained in his deep voice, "I checked Anthony’s financial statements, and from the looks of it, he hadn’t hired these ghosts through illegal means."
In his heart, though, he was screaming, ’Whoa... she is the first woman who didn’t swoon on Lucian. What a miracle!’
During his university years, Nixon had personally seen how alluring Lucian’s charm was. 90 out of 100 women liked him, and the remaining 10 had a crush on someone else.
’But why is Lucian staring at her with so much interest?’ Nixon thought; his eyes strayed to his best friend of 10 years.
Though Lucian remained calm and composed, if Nixon couldn’t discern the changes in his best friend’s mood, their 10-year friendship could be declared as plastic!
Lana, unaware of Nixon’s high evaluation of her, quickly went through the documents.
Love aside, when someone’s life was on the line, lust was the second thing she would like to think of.
Various possibilities churned in her mind, yet occasionally her mind was distracted by the faint fragrance unique only to Lucian wafting in her nose.
’Focus! Focus! You can lust after him during your second breakthrough! Lust can wait... life can’t!’
Fear ignited the determination in her heart, and the next second, Lana concluded,
"It must be a stray ghost... but the question is... how did he enter the safe zone?"
By now, Lana was seated on the comfortable ergonomic chair right beside Lucian, while Nixon was seated across the table, staring at Lana, waiting for her verdict.
"Artifact." Lucian hinted, and Lana’s and Nixon’s gazes narrowed.
There was indeed an artifact in the black market that allowed others to smuggle ghosts into Xila City.
"It’s most likely a ghost with less than 5 years of cultivation," Lana concluded. High cultivation ghosts hardly went undetected by machines stationed at the entrance.
"95% chance." Lucian corrected her; his cool voice drifted in the tense atmosphere, surprising Nixon.
Was this person still his untouchable best friend? Aloof and difficult to approach?
He implied that there was only a 95% chance of the ghost possessing only 5 years of cultivation.
Lana contemplated before retorting, "97% chance. A ghost with high cultivation disdains humans, let alone working with one."
Lucian and Nixon exchanged glances before agreeing in their hearts.
"Nixon, are the gauntlets ready?" Lana asked with a glimmer in her eyes.
She wasn’t skilled in combat, but when it came to weapons, she excelled. No one was better than her in it.
In her past life, after getting kicked out by the Almond family and being cheated by her best friend and fake cousin, Lana had become a member of a mercenary team.
Her main job? Fighting souls from ghosts using the weapons.
With her intelligence in weaponry, her title as a burden transformed into a ghostbuster!
"Ten samples have been created, and although they have passed beta testing, they are currently being modified. There are no safety issues with them. Only... their power will be subpar since they haven’t been modified yet." Nixon explained.
"That won’t do." Lana analyzed, "Subpar weapons may seem workable... but at a critical junction, if they make any mistake... we might end up as a troublemaker rather than helping." Lana tapped her finger on the table.
Lucian’s lips curled into a smile, and the raw intensity with which he was staring at Lana attracted Nixon’s attention.
’Hm... Lucian must already have a solution... and now wants to know what Lana was going to plan.’ Nixon murmured in his heart.
"Find a few psychics." Lana’s expression turned grim.
"We can’t apply for a priest, a mystic cultivator, or similar roles, so we can only hire an exoray. Let them use the gauntlets, too. I will make the formation. If my estimate is right, with the exoray and a few tricks up my sleeves... fighting against a ghost with 15 years of cultivation won’t be difficult."
Though a bit uncertain, Nixon quickly hired a few exoray. After soul cultivators, the most common type of awakener was exoray (superhumans). ʀᴇᴀᴅ ʟᴀᴛᴇsᴛ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs ᴀᴛ NoveIꜰire.net
It took Nixon only an hour to assemble a batch of psychics.
"Why psychics, though? There are many different types of Exoray, too." Nixon questioned.
Fire- and thunder-type superhumans were more effective against ghosts, while psychics, though powerful against humans, were counted on the weaker side of Exoray.
Lana, busy sketching the formation, smirked, "They are the most powerful ones; they just don’t have enough weapons to show their true potential."
Lucian watched Lana’s every move with deep interest. Not once did he interrupt; his steady breathing made it even harder to detect his presence.
Once done with her formation, Lana subconsciously turned to hand over the paper to Lucian.
Lucian blinked once in confusion, while Lana screamed internally.
’You, stupid! He must have been suspicious, and now your actions are confirming it! God, Nytheris, if I am your blessed child, please help me! Wuwu! If he sees me as another woman lusting after him, I will cry in front of your statues for 3 days!’
However, the words Lana blurted out later handled the situation.
"You seem to be good with data; please check it."
Hey! With a good head on the body, what can’t be achieved?
"Why should I?" Lucian arched a brow, looking genuinely puzzled. If Lana wasn’t familiar with the habit of Lucian arching a brow whenever he was interested, she would have been fooled.
"You seem interested." Lana smiled confidently.
