Chapter 44: Chapter 44
Skye's POV
I panicked when Natasha came to tell me about the ice breaking off the lake. I rushed towards the scene. On getting there, I saw Ava holding the little boy's hand and then letting go as she dived to the other side of the lake.
"I told you, Skye, she's going to save the crescent that just fell and abandoned him," Natasha said to me pointing out the fact.
I walked slowly towards where the boy was but, I couldn't get hold of his hand. I had to dive into the water and pushed him up. I took him to the pack's clinic ignoring Ava who was in the water. He was blue and his mother was wailing. While the pack's first aiders attended to him, I went to find Ava. She was sitting at the fireplace with Luna who was covered in a thick duvet.
"What was that about?" I asked her angrily but she ignored me. "I demand an answer woman!" I yelled at her.
"Before you go about yelling, why don't you ask Natasha?" She finally said.
"I saw with my eyes Ava, you abandoned the boy to save your own!" I yelled angrily. She stood up in a furious way. "What were you expecting me to do? Abandon the only girl entrusted in my care in just a few spaces of time?!" She lashed out at me.
"He was in the water a long time before her. What if he had died?" I questioned.
"She sank. You would have done the same thing if you were in my shoes." She said defiantly.
Out of nowhere, the little boy's mother came and slapped Ava hard on her face. "You left my son David to die in that lake and you claim to be our queen." She said bitterly. Terra held her face and stared at her and walked out of the house. Just then, I heard noises and headed towards the door and I saw the pack yelling.
"You claim to be our queen but you can't protect us!"
"Your pack comes before us!"
"We do not need a queen that won't stand with us!"
"We do not want you as queen anymore!" They rebelled.
"Enough!" Ava yelled. The words got into her as she let out her pent up anger. "Enough I say!" She bellowed and her wolf eyes flashed and they fell silent. She was really angry.
"I warned them not to skate on the ice but they would not listen. The boy David, said I wasn't a blood moon and won't take orders from me."
"Is that why you wanted him to die?" I asked her still angry because what Natasha told me wasn't going along with hers.
She turned to me. "Listen to me before jumping to conclusions," she said and faced the pack again. "I singlehandedly saved two children from this pack and when I left one, just to save one life of my own, you're all aggressive. Now tell me, if you were in my shoes, won't you do the same?" She asked and they stared at her. "What am I even saying? You all will abandon the crescent girl and save your pack first."
"Do not brand us as inhumane," I said, my eyes dark with anger.
"That's what you are and very ungrateful too. Natasha caused this event by telling the kids it was safe to skate while I disagree and when the ice cracked and they fell, I saved two of this pack's children and when I decided to save one of my own, I'm branded as a cold hearted beast." She said really upset.
Natasha had told me that she helped Ava save the children and Ava told her she was going to save the last one.
"First, the alpha's life was threatened by your pack and now, the lives of our children are threatened." They murmured.
"If that's all you all believe, then I leave you all to your stupid sense of reasoning." She said in anger and walked away.
"You see, she's..." Nat began but I grabbed her arm and said. "Tell me the truth."
She stared at me in shock. "What truth? Don't tell me you believe what she said." She said. I summoned for Anna and she came forward. "I want you to find out the event that happened at the lake," I said and she nodded. She held Natasha's hand and she stared at me. "You don't trust me anymore?" She asked.
"Just to be on the safer side," I said.
Anna let go of her hand. "Natasha told the kids it was safe to skate. She pushed Luna to the ice which resulted in another breakage." Anna said and everyone gasped. Nat stared at her in horror. "You pathetic liar." She said grabbing Anna's hair and I pulled her away from her. "Don't ever touch her again," I said and walked away to check the condition of David. He was in a coma and the first aiders didn't know when he'll be out. I sent for Walter, the blood moon doctor in the city.
Ava's POV
I sat by the lake frustrated. "Bloody hell!" I cursed. Who told them I wanted to be their queen anyways? I was mad at Skye for not believing me and for his ungratefulness.
"You little swine," I heard Nat's voice as she grabbed my arm suddenly which resulted in me falling down as she dragged me towards the lake.
"You crazy bitch, let go of me," I said to her but she didn't listen.
"You succeeded in turning Skye against me." She said as she dragged me. I kicked her when we got to the ice and she fell down and her weight broke the ice more and we fell. I struggled to get out of the water but she kept pulling me in to support herself in getting out.
I struggled but I couldn't get out. I jabbed her with my elbow on her face and she fell back into the water. I got myself out to my waist breathing hard. I was about getting free when she dragged me down again and pushed me down the depth of the lake.
The temperature of the lake increased and the water got into my nose as I couldn't hold my breath anymore. I could no longer see Natasha. My eyes were closing as I felt my lungs closing in on me. I was sinking. Was this how I was going to end? What about the prophecy? What about Luna and the pack?
I closed my eyes as I couldn't hold it anymore.
It felt like a dream, I was pulled up and taken out of the lake. My stomach was pressed to remove the water in it but I didn't want to wake up. I was having a beautiful dream. I saw mother and she smiled at me but kept telling me to go back. It kept repeating in my head and I sneezed.
I felt myself pulled into someone's arms and holding me tight. I opened my eyes and I perceived his scent. Skye was holding me.
"Skye," I whispered.
He held me tight. "I'm here, love. I'm sorry I didn't get to you on time. Please forgive me." He pleaded.
I held him closer to myself. For the first time since I've known him, I was glad to see him.
