Chapter 38: Chapter 38
BOTH Kelly and Jeff turned to me.
"I think it's from Gideon. Though… I'm not really sure." I pursed my lips.
"Your husband?"
Before I could answer Jeff, I already heard my cell phone ringing. I excused myself from them and answered the call. It was Gideon.
"Hi, Bianca." Gideon's deep voice welcomed me.
Now, I could confirm that he's really the one who sent the food. Why else would he call, right?
"Hey. Uh, we received a delivery from IL Fornaio. Did you send us lunch?"
"Yeah. I called to check if the food already arrived."
I could hear some background noise from the other line. Was he outside his office?
I cleared my throat. "Why did you do that?"
"Send you food?" he said. "Well, you're my wife. And I wanted to make sure you're eating good food."
I frowned. "I always eat good food."
"Hmm, Kelly mentioned that you only had a burger at lunch yesterday?"
Even if I didn't see him, I could imagine his brow was lifted as he said those words.
"It was a one-pounder burger," I justified. Now, I feel like I suddenly wanted to wring Kelly's neck.
"But thanks for the food, anyway," I said in a small tone before clearing my throat. I still wasn't used to thanking him.
"You're welcome, wife," he answered in a soft voice that made me feel something in my chest.
I pursed my lips and tried to check on my nails. They were painted, unlike Kelly's.
"Uh… how about you?" I bit my lower lip. "Have you had lunch?" I decided to ask.
"Not yet. Dad and I have a scheduled lunch meeting with a French investor outside," he answered. "By the way, is it okay if I won't be able to fetch you later today? Dad asked me to come with him to visit a site in Nevada. I told him I'll ask you first."
I frowned. "Of course, you can go. You don't have to ask me first, Gideon."
"You're my wife, Bianca. I didn't want to make decisions without informing you first."
I pursed my lips but didn't say anything. Damn. He'd been really acting like a good husband.
"Sir Gideon… your father was already asking for you."
I heard someone say from the other line.
"Yeah. I'll be there in ten. I'm still talking to my wife."
I blinked. He's talking to me around someone?
I cleared my throat. "I'll end the call now, Gideon."
"Alright. See you later. I'll be home by eight."
"Yeah. Uh... see you."
"Bye, wife. Enjoy your lunch."
When I came back to the table, I found out that the food was still untouched.
Apparently, Jeff and Kelly were waiting for me.
"Sorry," I apologized. "Gideon called."
"Is he going to come here later?" Kelly asked as I sat next to her. "I wanted to personally thank him for the food."
I gave her a small smile. "No. He'll be in Nevada later." I thanked her for handing me a plate.
"I hope you don't mind, but what's your husband's business, Bianca?" Jeff asked. "The food he had sent was already worth my month's salary here."
I cleared my throat. "Uh… He worked in the Henry Corporations."
Kelly looked at me. "Oh, wow. That's a huge company. Is he one of the managers there?"
I bit my lower lip. Should I tell them the truth? I didn't want to lie to them. "He's the CEO of the company."
Both of them stopped eating and looked at me with wide eyes.
"Gideon, your husband, is the CEO of Henry Corporation?"
"Gideon's last name is Henry?"
I nodded at them. "Yeah. He's a Henry. His family owns the Henry Corporation."
Kelly blinked at me. I wanted to laugh at her bewildered expression. She looked like someone had just dropped a bomb at her.
"You two are married. That means you're also a Henry!"
I nodded reluctantly. "Well, technically, yes. I'm carrying their name."
"Holy cow. Then what are you doing here?" Kelly spat out me. "Your husband belongs to one of the richest families in the country and you're out here, working as a store assistant?"
I already expected this kind of reaction from them. "Gideon's rich. Not me." I only said, shrugging my shoulders.
"But you're his wife."
"We have a prenuptial agreement. Besides… I'll be divorcing him months from now."
Kelly stared at me. "What? I mean, why are you divorcing him?"
Even Jeff in front of us was curious and waiting for my answer.
I gave them a small smile. "It's complicated. Let's just say that we didn't really get married because of the right reasons. Gideon and I didn't love each other. And I can't stay in a loveless marriage for the rest of my life."
The woman beside me frowned. "Really? But I could tell that your husband's in love with you! Right, Jeff?" Kelly even looked at Jeff for support.
"Yeah. Your husband looks like he's smitten with you, Bianca."
"See? He even sent us this lunch." Kelly motioned at the food in front of us. "That only means he cares for you."
Helen. Kelly. Jeff. Three people had already told me that Gideon was in love with me. Four, if I would include Gideon himself.
But I didn't want to believe that. These people around me, they didn't really know my exact relationship with Gideon. They didn't know what kind of person he was.
I refused to believe that he really fell for me in that short amount of time. Gideon was just confused. He didn't have any memory of the past. He woke up believing we were a normal couple.
I looked at Kelly. "Well, even if he's claiming to be in love with him, I don't love him."
"Oh…" Kelly muttered while her eyes were still on me. I felt like she was trying to read me or something.
"Yeah." I cleared my throat and smiled. "Come on, guys. Let's just continue eating."
