Chapter 20: Chapter 20
Ava moved about her apartment, a sense of urgency guiding her as she swiftly tidied up the scattered papers, folded the blankets, and arranged the haphazardly placed items. The rhythmic act of organizing her surroundings was a futile attempt to distract herself from the whirlwind of emotions swirling within.
Amidst the tidying, Bryan's face lingered in her thoughts. His genuine invitation had taken her by surprise, and the memory of turning him down left an uncomfortable pang in her chest. She wondered if she should have accepted, allowing herself the chance to get to know him better outside the confines of the office.
As she dusted the shelves, her mind wandered back to their interactions. The undeniable connection she felt with Bryan made her question her decision. Was she being too cautious, too guarded?
Ava couldn't help but feel a tinge of regret as she recalled the flicker of disappointment in Bryan's eyes when she declined. His gracious acceptance of her refusal only intensified her feelings of unease.
Completing the tidying, Ava sank onto her couch, the weight of the evening settling upon her. Her gaze drifted to her phone, a silent reminder of missed opportunities.
The evening wore on, the dim glow of the setting sun casting a warm hue across the room. Ava sat in contemplative silence, grappling with the intricate web of emotions that Bryan's invitation had stirred within her.
As the night deepened, Ava's thoughts lingered on the missed chance. She found herself yearning for a second opportunity to connect with Bryan, to bridge the gap between their professional personas and explore the possibility of something more meaningful.
In the quiet solitude of her apartment, Ava realized that maybe, just maybe, she had been too quick to dismiss the chance for lunch with Bryan—a realization that left her with a lingering sense of longing and a fervent hope for a chance to make amends.
The minutes dragged on, but sleep eluded Ava. Tossing and turning in bed, her mind remained consumed by thoughts of Bryan and the lunch invitation she had declined. Frustration welled up inside her, amplifying the restlessness that gripped her through the night.
Finally succumbing to the persistent turmoil, Ava reached for her phone on the bedside table. With a deep breath, she dialed Bella's number, hoping for a sliver of solace in the midst of her inner turmoil.
The phone rang once, twice, and on the third ring, Bella answered, her voice heavy with sleep. " Don't you sleep? " she mumbled in a groggy tone.
Ava winced at the interruption but quickly gathered her thoughts. " Sorry, Bella. I couldn't sleep. I needed to talk. "
" What's up? " Bella asked, her voice gaining a hint of alertness, sensing the urgency in Ava's tone.
Ava hesitated for a moment before plunging into her story, recounting Bryan's lunch invitation and her decision to turn him down. As she finished, there was a brief silence on the other end of the line.
" What?! " Bella's voice exploded, suddenly fully awake. " You turned down lunch with Bryan? Are you serious? "
Ava sighed, feeling a mix of relief and anxiety at Bella's reaction. " I know, I know. It was just... unexpected. I wasn't sure if I should've accepted. "
Bella's tone was filled with disbelief. " Ava, he invited you to lunch! That's a big deal! He's charming, successful, and single... "
Ava cut in, " That's precisely why I hesitated! It's not just about lunch, Bella. It's about the implications, the expectations... "
Bella interrupted, her voice empathetic yet firm. " Ava, sometimes you need to take a chance. Maybe he just wanted to get to know you better outside the office. You could be missing out on something wonderful because you're overthinking. "
" But what if he's not single? " Ava asked
" He is single Ava, I can feel it. He wouldn't come for you if he wasn't single " Bella said convincingly.
Ava sighed, her friend's words hitting a nerve. " I know you're right, Bella. But what if it's too late now? "
Bella's voice softened. " Why don't you reach out to him tomorrow? Explain that you'd love to take him up on his offer and suggest another time. It's worth a shot, Ava. "
A sense of gratitude washed over Ava, thankful for Bella's candid advice. " Thanks, Bella. I needed to hear that. I'll see what I can do tomorrow. "
With a promise to keep her updated, Ava ended the call, a newfound determination blossoming within her. She lay back on her bed, the echo of Bella's encouragement reverberating through her thoughts.
Despite the lateness of the hour, a glimmer of hope emerged amidst the uncertainties. Ava decided that tomorrow would be a chance to set things right and possibly open a new chapter—one that might lead her to explore the connection she felt with Bryan beyond the confines of the office.

Restlessness gripped Bryan as he lay in bed, the darkness of the night amplifying his turmoil. Thoughts of Ava consumed his mind, her refusal to join him for lunch echoing in his thoughts like an unresolved melody.
He tossed and turned, the pristine sheets crumpling beneath him as he grappled with confusion. Bryan was accustomed to success in various facets of life—wealth, charm, and stature—attributes that had often worked in his favor. Yet, Ava's rejection lingered like an unexplained enigma, unsettling him.
" Why would she turn me down? " Bryan pondered, frustration simmering beneath the surface. The memory of Ava's hesitation when declining his invitation played on a loop in his mind, a puzzle he couldn't decipher.
In his forty two years, Bryan had seldom encountered rejection, especially from women. Women flocked around him, wanting a little bit of his attention so why was she different??. His charm and accomplishments had often garnered admiration, leaving him perplexed by Ava's unexpected response. He couldn't fathom why she might have declined, and that uncertainty unsettled him deeply.
