Chapter 36: Chapter 36
XXXII
"Oh, my god." I wince and cover my eyes with my hand to shield them from the burning light outside. Fucking hangover.
"Morning." I hear Sophie's voice from right next to me, and I look down to meet her icy blue eyes. "How did you get in here last night, Axel?" she asks and I shrug.
"No idea. Can't remember shit."
Sophie grabs my arm all of a sudden, wincing.
"What is it?" I'm suddenly completely awake, ready to call the doctors. She shakes her head. "He's kicking. He's really strong."
My lips part and I raise my eyebrows, placing my hand next to hers on her stomach. After a few moments, I feel his kick.
I giggle, unlike Sophie. "Tell me about last night, Axel." she demands, making me annoyed in less then a second.
Rolling my eyes, I plop back down the bed and look up the ceiling, rolling my eyes. "Can't you just let it go?" I whine and she shakes her head, like I knew she would.
Goddamn it.
"Absolutely not, who do you think I am? Just some side chick of yours? We live together and I'm soon going to have a baby with you, I deserve to know."
"Well, you're not the only one." I mumble in annoyance before I can stop myself.
Oh my fucking god, did I just...?
Bad Axel. Bad, bad Axel.
"Excuse me?!" she exclaims in that famous voice of hers and I'm not even close to annoyed anymore. I'm a little scared.
"What do you mean, 'I'm not the only one?'?! Do you have another girlfriend?!" she grabs me by my collar and I wince. Okay, I'm shitload scared.
"Please, let me go, I'll tell you everything but I don't want to just blurt it our because you're scaring me!" I ramble and she tightens her grip.
"No, I won't give you opportunity to lie. Tell me, now, or I'll make sure you won't be able to visit either me or the baby for as long as we're in here and then I'll get a restraining order-"
"I have a kid."
I quickly cover my mouth with my hands, but it's already out there.
Shit. Shit. Shit.
I never realized how scary she could be, this is what I get for not being fucking prepared.
She slowly removes her hand, her angry expression turned into a confused one and I can't understand how I could ever be afraid of her.
"What do you mean?" she asks quietly. I'm still waiting for her to explode.
"Well,..." how do I say this? "Yesterday when I went to a store to get you flowers-that's actually true, but I lost them somewhere on the way- well, I crashed into this woman and her kid, about three years old." I slowly say.
She still hasn't blown off.
"Well, I used to date her. The woman." I confess and she raises her eyebrows.
"You had a girlfriend before me?" she asks and I nod. "Yeah, but she's screwed me up completely that's why I don't speak of her. We didn't end it on good terms."
Sophie nods for me to continue.
"Well, anyway, she had a kid. And as you may already know, he's mine. I mean, she got pregnant a week before we broke it off and never told me about it. It's why I got drunk yesterday. I didn't know what to do about it. I didn't know how to tell you. But now I know what to do - Sophie, I'd really like to gain custody of him. He's really adorable and I promise you're gonna love him. I know this was unexpected and I'm sorry about that, but we can work this out, right?" I basically beg her, and she surprises me by nodding.
"Yeah. When can I meet him?"
Wait, what? She's not gonna explode?
It takes me a moment to process her words, I expected that we would have a full on fight by now.
"Um. Well. As soon as you can. Or I could bring him here if Natalie would let me. Aren't you mad about this?" I ask her, I can't help myself.
She shakes her head in response. "No, why would I be? It's not really your fault. I mean, you could've told me about her but I already knew about her since I found an old picture of you guys and you coul've told me straight away instead of getting drunk, but you did overall good for you. I wanna meet him, I bet he's really cute."
A part of me wants to do the "who are you and where's Sophie" joke, but I'd rather not take the risk of provoking her, so I keep my big mouth shut.
I also want to know about the picture, but I'll save that argument for some other time.
Instead of saying anything, i simply lean down and plant a kiss on her soft lips. "And that's why I love you. There's no other girl on this world that's a better girlfriend."
She simply smiles in response and I push away the thought that the only reason that she reacted this way is because she's burned out. Burned out by me and all of my baggage.
