Chapter 32: Chapter 32

Maeve was spacing out when September entered the kitchen. He had been calling out to her but there was no answer so he went to check of she was in the kitchen.

"Hey, what's wrong?" He asked worriedly as he put his arms over her shoulders.

Maeve was a bit startled with his presence and accidentally hurt herself with the knife she was holding.

September tsked before he took the knife from her and pulled her towards the sink to wash her wound with water

"You should be careful," September said in a scolding manner as he took out the first aid kit from the kitchen drawer.

"You startled me," she pointed out.

"I've been calling out to you for quite a while already. What were you thinking that got you so preoccupied?" He inquired as he cleaned her injury.

She didn't respond immediately as she keeps an eye with her husband's expression. She knew how fond he was about that kid. He even thought of adopting her. That's why she was so torn whether she should say what she saw. Maybe it was just because that woman isn't in the mood that time that's why she accidentally hurted the child?

But her silence caught September's interests even more.

"What's wrong?" He asked once again as he secured her tiny wound with a strip of band aid.

"Remember Fiona?" She asked, her tone was careful.

September's forehead creases as he tookheard the familiar name. Why would his wife suddenly bring her up?

"Yeah. What about her?" Maeve stared at his face for a while and finally decided to tell him.

"Well, I saw her today."

"You came to the orphanage?" He asked, confused.

"No... No, I didn't. We just bumped into each other on the supermarket." She answered and she immediately noticed the subtle falling of his shoulders. Although she knew he's trying not to show his dismay, his fallen shoulders and sad eyes told her that he realized why they would bumped into each other.

"I see... She's been adopted. Good for her." He said smiling a bit.

"You really like her?"

"I just felt a little more attached to the kid than the others."

"September, you've been together for only almost a day."

"But I still like her though. She's so tiny, sweet and clingy." He said unconsciously smiling as he talked about the child.

"Are you free tomorrow? Let's go to Sunny Orphanage." She suddenly blurted out.

"Huh? Why?"

"I noticed something bothering about her and her new mom. Since you like her so much, let's keep an eye on her then. Hmm?" September stared at his wife for a while before finally nodding.

"Maeve! September!" The children shouted im unison as they surge to them like a big wave.

"Hello! How are you?" Maeve asked in a sweet and gentle voice as they entered the orphanage.

Sunny Orphanage's two storey building looks sturdy from all the years of service yet, the loud noises coming from the children playing, crying and suchlike made it feel home.

"Sister Helena," Maeve and September bowed down a bit to show respect to the nun.

"Maeve, September. It's good to see you," the nun greeted with a smile.

"How may I help you?"

"We would like to discuss something with you." The nun stared at them for a while before nodding and asking the older children to look after the younger ones.

"So what is it about?" Sister Helena asked as we finally settled down inside her tiny office.

September glanced at Maeve before nodding in encouragement. Maeve held a deep sigh before she faced the nun and started asking questions about Fiona.

"Fiona? She was adopted about a month ago. Her new mom is a former beauty queen. Why you ask?"

"It's because I happened to see her on the supermarket yesterday, and she doesn't looked...well, I don't know what word to used but she doesn't looked happy at all. She even got thinner than the last time I saw her." Maeve explained earning a small smile from the nun.

"We already had cases like that. It's pretty normal for kids to feel uneasiness with their new family. Especially Fiona, it was her first time to really have parents since she was with us since she was born. It would be gone after a while." The nun assured them but Maeve still felt bothered about it.

September sighed when he saw his wife's expression. He was really wondering what exactly she daw that made her feel bothered to this extent.

"Sister, you said Fiona's new parent is a former beauty queen? May we know her name." The nun stared back and forth between the two people in front of her. She was wondering why this two important persons is dwelling too much for a child that had already been adopted.

A little while later, the nun sighed and nodded with a small smile.

"Her name is Tracy Amster. She was our country's representative for the Miss Universe I think it's five years ago? I'm not sure what year it was." The nun said before she told them how the adoption process of Fiona went smoothly.

"She was badly smitten with Fiona. So there's no need to worry if she's being treated nicely because we're sure that she is." The nun assured them as she reached out for the hands of the couple.

"Fiona's in good hands and now belong to a new family. She's justs starting to settle down and the adjustment period may take a toll on her. But she would be fine soon. Don't worry." The couple nodded, said their thanks and left her office.

They just bid a quick farewell to the other children before they hit the road to go back to the city.

"It was still bothering me." Maeve confessed after a while of complete silence inside the car. September was silently waiting for her to talk and she finally did.

"Can we do something to check on her?" Maeve asked with her forehead creased.

"I'll take care of it. Calm down alright?" September said coaxing her.

Maeve sighed and rested her back on passenger seat as she closed her eyes. She opened it immediately when Fiona's pleading face appeared on her mind.

She faced her husband with a pleading face.

"Please do it as soon as possible..." September held her hand with one hand before nodding.
