Chapter 23: Chapter 23
KEVIN’S POV
The next day I visited the City Hospital with Collins and some of my men. We had arranged for fake documents to get the equipment. Once it was all loaded in the truck. I went to meet the doctor and lured him out.
We shoved him into the large van, strapped him up, and drove to the packhouse. The journey home was a quiet one but a storm was brewing in my mind.
I had never broken any law before but today… today I was kidnapping a doctor against his will.
“Where the hell are you taking me?” The doctor stuttered between gasps, the moment we took off the tape from his mouth.
My heart twisted with guilt looking at his pale expression. This was the man who had saved my mate’s life but I had no choice but to imprison him here.
Blood trickling down his left wrist caught my attention. Collins must have gripped him a bit too tight.
“I will take it from here,” I commanded as I grasped the doctor’s other hand. There was no need to hurt him at least pysically. “You go and get all the equipment carried to the basement. We will set up a mini OT there.
I ensured that I was holding his hand gently and let him walk at his pace. He must have mistaken my gentleness for my weakness. He kicked me in the gut. I was taken by surprise and released him. He tried to run but I had grasped him by his shoulder even before he could take a few steps. This time, I held him in an iron grip.
His eyes widened in surprise and said, “What are you? I am a black belt in karate. The move I pulled out can kill a man. You didn’t even flinch…”
“The lesser you know the safer you will be…” I said and dragged him to the underground cellar. I realized that being friendly would make him bolder and he would get hurt if he tried to escape again.
“You can’t keep me trapped in here. When I don’t go home, my wife will go to the cops. They will track me down and you all will be punished…” The man shouted, tugging at the bars of the cell he was locked up in.
Loud footsteps echoed in the dungeon as my father walked in. He glared at the doctor and
“I don’t like people who keep making noise…” My father’s voice boomed. The doctor’s face turned whiter than a ghost. He scurried to the back of the cell and huddled in a corner.
My father grasped my hand and almost dragged me outside. ”Why the hell have you brought him here?”
“He is a doctor…”
My father’s expression turned furious and he gritted out, “I know that Kevin… WHY is he here?”
“He will help us to make the antidote…” I lied smoothly. I wasn’t prepared to tell him the entire story yet…
“Fine… just make sure that he doesn’t escape. We don’t want any trouble…”
“I understand, dad…”
“Well… let’s hurry then… we hardly have a week for the unification ceremony… We are lagging behind in preparations. I want this ceremony to be the best one in the history of werewolves!” He said in a cheerful voice as he walked inside.
My heart skipped a beat and my feet stopped moving. I had completely forgotten that I agreed to marry Cami. I tore my hair in frustration. What the hell was I supposed to do now…
KIARA’S POV
“What are you not telling me, Nivaan?” I asked, trying to sound as stern as possible.
“Nothing… you should probably go and get dressed… your mate must be on his way…”
“Whatever…,” I muttered and stormed outside the tent. It was almost a week since my brother started behaving in a weir manner. He was always busy and rarely spoke to me. I had a feeling that he was hiding something from me. But, I couldn’t figure it out no matter how hard I tried.
The number of cases of poisoned bites had gone down drastically too. Practically I was bored…
I trudged along the weather worn path of the forest, letting my mind wander. There was something that was haunting me.
Though Kevin came to meet me everyday and spent a lot of time with me, he hadn’t formally accepted me as his mate. Whenever I talked about meeting his family, he made some excuse or other.
In the beginning, I thought that he just needed more time to adjust but now… I couldn’t help but wonder if something was wrong…
“Where are you going?” Kevin’s musical voice sounded behind me. But, instead of stopping I increased my pace.
He caught up within few minutes and stood right in front of me, blocking my path. He cupped my face and asked in a concerned voice, “What is wrong?”
Looking into his eyes, I countered, “You tell me Kevin… is there something you want to tell me?”
His face turned pale. He looked so defeated that I almost took back my words…
He lowered his eyes and stuttered, “I don’t know how to say this, Kiara… I… I… ummm…”
I didn’t like putting him in an uncomfortable position but I had to find out the truth. I lifted his chin so that he was looking into my eyes and said, “If you can’t tell me, let me into your mind…”
His thoughts flooded my mind the moment I said this. It was as if he had been waiting for me to confront him. I could feel his panic, pain, love, helplessness yet my heart shattered to a thousand bits when I found out that he had agreed to marry Cami.
If only Kevin had found out the truth a day earlier. It was as if Destiny was hell bent on keeping us apart…
“Please give me one chance, Kiara. I will tell my parents everything and make this right…” He called out in a panicked voice as I turned around and started walking away from him.
Letting out a long suffering sigh, I said without even turning to look at him, “There is no use, Kevin… you should just go and marry her… we were never destined to be together…”
Every fiber in my body wanted me to run back to him and jump into his arms but I forced myself to keep walking…
