Chapter 22: Chapter 22

KEVIN’S POV

My heart fluttered as I watched Kiara sleep. She looked so peaceful and calm; unlike the other times. Now that I knew the truth, I felt like crap that I hadn’t tried harder to find out the truth. How did I not see that my mate was in so much pain?

“Kevin, Can we have a word?” Nivaan’s voice was bland as he beckoned me to follow outside. It was difficult to figure out if he was happy or angry by his tone.

‘Let us do this.’ I encouraged myself mentally and followed him outside. I really hoped that he would at least give me a chance to prove that I could be a good mate.

Clearing my throat, I said; “I know I failed big time, Nivaan… I shouldn’t have rejected her without investigating the matter. it might be difficult for you to forgive me. All I ask is that you give me a chance to prove myself. I don’t know what I would…”

Nivaan burst out laughing making me halt in between. My face flushed and my lips pursed into a thin line. His reaction really stung. If he was angry and even threw a punch or two I would have accepted. He couldn’t mock my love like this…

“I know you are Kiara’s brother but even you are not allowed to mock my love…” I said, turning to leave but he grasped me by my shoulder.

“I am so sorry, Kevin. I didn’t mean to insult you. It is just that… umm… I had planned to act as the responsible elder brother and scold you. But, when I saw your sincere expression…”

I stared at him with a blank expression. I had no idea what exactly he wanted to say. He must have caught on with this because he stretched his hand towards me and said, “ummm…. Can we just forget my reaction and start over…”

There was nothing I wanted more than this. I shook his hand firmly and smiled at him, “Of course! What is it that you wanted to speak to me about?”

“After Kiara left the packhouse that day, she met with an accident.”

My heart skipped a beat when I heard this. Running my hand through my head, I exclaimed, “F***! No! I am so sorry… I am such an idiot… to be honest, I don’t deserve someone like Kiara… I…”

Nivaan placed his hand on my shoulders and said, “You must stop blaming yourself for what happened. It was not your fault or even Kiara’s for that matter. We had no control over what happened.”

I let out the breath I was holding. I was glad to know that Nivaan didn’t blame me for what happened. Exhaling deeply I nodded my head.

Nivaan patted my back and continued, “While you were with Kiara I went to the city hospital to see Dr. Grimson. He was the one who treated Kiara.”

“What did he have to say?”

“Kiara had lost a lot of blood. The toxicity level of the little blood that was left in her system was so high that they thought they couldn’t save her. So, they performed a special procedure which involves sucking out all the blood and replacing it with fresh blood…”

My eyes widened in realization, “That must be how Kiara’s blood lost its toxicity….umm… do you think the doctor can do this procedure on others too…”

“Probably… but why are you asking?”

I opened my mouth but closed it back. I wasn’t sure if I should tell him about the poisoned wolves we had captured…

Nivaan looked at me with pleading eyes and said, “These are difficult times, buddy. So, if you know anything you must let us know… that is the only way we can keep our packs safe…”

He had a point. Plus, I also wanted them to give me the antidote. How could I expect him to help me if he didn’t trust me?

“We have captured three poisoned wolves. I was wondering if we could cure them too…”

Nivaan’s eyes turned red and his jaws clenched as he roared, “Why are they still living? If you are afraid to give them to me, I will kill them with my own hands…”

“Nivaan, please listen to me first…”

“There is nothing to listen to… do you have any idea how many members of my pack they have killed. They need to be punished!”

“I know how you are feeling… just take a few deep breaths and listen to me…”

The moment these words had left my mouth he grabbed me by my collar and gritted out, “How could YOU possibly understand?”

I glared at him and almost shouted, “You are not the only one who has lost people to those poisoned wolves. Believe me, I detest them with a passion too… but…”

“But, what?”

“What if they were forced to do the dirty work by Ariana just like you and Kiara? Shouldn’t we give them a chance to redeem themselves?”

He released me and straightened my collar saying, “I am sorry… I am usually in control… you are right… Execution should be used as a last resort… let us go and get the doctor and his equipment…”

“Do you think he will agree?”

“That won’t be necessary…”

My eyes widened in horror and I asked, “Don’t tell me you are going to kidnap him…”

He shrugged his shoulder, “We else can we do? We can’t go and say, ‘Hey doc! There are some werewolves who have been given poison. Now, they can kill other werewolves just by biting them. Can you please help us cure them’… the doctor will be so willing to come with us…”

He had a point but it still felt wrong to kidnap someone. Though in the light of current events, I don’t think we had much of a choice…
