Chapter 42: Chapter 42

Steven

"Let's go to the meeting room." Mavin told me when he got inside his office.

I am now at their headquarters. Aside from getting checked by the doctor, I am trying to understand why I am being called here. After getting shot, my wound did not heal that fast. It's been four days since that incident happened. My wound is still the same. The size did not decrease at all. Sometimes it bled when my classmates accidentally hit it.

I am drinking medicine to subdue the pain, and I get fevers from time to time. They said it was the effect of what they put in the bullet. Dad also ordered them to set a high-risk level and tighten the security. They implemented the training and are currently solving the thing they put on their bullet.

I followed Mavin until we got to a closed room. The blinds were down, and I saw his employees and my dad sitting quietly. Now, the question is, why am I getting involved here? I am still not part of this group and do not know about my existence here today.

Are they hiring me now? I am still undecided.

I sat down on the nearest empty seat. Mavin headed to the front, getting the whiteboard marker. "Shall we start now?" Mavin asked.

They all nodded their heads in agreement. I nodded, unsure of what was happening. Maybe they would like to enlighten me before starting whatever they need to start. Should they?

"According to our investigation, the former leader of the Duskfall Hunters was already dead," Mavin announced. "That is why their movements change. They have a new leader who has changed their ways of killing people. We still do not have any information about their new leader or his new photos. We are still working on that." He added.

"Have you got any information on how their former leader died?" Dad asked.

Mavin only shook his head. "Unfortunately, we did not get information about it either. They are tightening their security as well." He replied.

I raised my arms, trying to get their attention. Mavin saw me and nodded at me, telling me I could ask him. "Why... why am I here?" I asked.

They all turned to look at me, making me nervous in my seat.

"We decided to include you in this meeting because we have some questions for you." Raff replied.

My forehead creased. "Questions? What is it?" I asked back. "I hate this feeling. Can you tell me now what it is about?"

"We are just wondering why they are targeting you." Ali responded.

Are they targeting me? "Who?" I asked, still confused about what they wanted to deliver.

"That night," Mavin trailed off. "I just called you and asked what you wanted me to buy. Were you home that night?" He asked.

I shook my head. "I am on my way to see you that night." I replied.

"Why?" He asked back.

"I received a call from an unknown number. He told me that he would kill you," I shared. "At first, I did not want to believe him. But when he said the address was here, he was waiting for you to come out. That is where I ran there." I added.

Even though I hate him and his noisiness, I do not want him to get into danger.

"He was targeting you. He just used me as bait," Mavin explained. "He admitted to killing people in the cities. He told me that I am your brother and swore to kill you." He added.

"The question is, have you gotten into a fight while you were here?" Mel asked.

Me? Involved in a fight?

"There is no way he will get involved in a fight. Right, Steven?" Mavin asked me.

I nodded. "Why would I get involved in the first..."

I think I fought with Mr. Prile and Sunny's jerk ex-boyfriend. Can I call that a fight?

"Why? Why are you hesitating?" Dad asked me.

Mavin's eyes widened, and his mouth fell wide open. "No way. You got involved in a fight?!" He asked hysterically. "Why? When? How?" He added. He was interested in the story.

I sighed. "I confronted our former physical education professor about his lesson plan at school. He was abusing us, as well as the other sections. He was fired from our university. The other one was Sunny's ex-boyfriend. It is not just me. Our section went to his department, and we confronted him because of his cheating." I shared the news again.

Their jaws dropped. "We are not dreaming, right?" Raff asked. The others nodded their heads altogether. "Going here is a good decision." Mel also commented.

"I told you, dad. He changed too much, and he is not the Steven we know. I am so proud of him." Mavin said, acting proud.

"But that is not a big fight at all? On my first day at school, I was attacked by one of them. I do not understand why they are targeting me." I told them.

"We have concluded that they were targeting you because they know you are our family's youngest alpha. You know how against them they are in our organization," Mavin explained. "But that man has this aura and the determination to kill you. I do not think it is because you are the youngest in our family."

"But we will still investigate them." Dad commented.

"So, that is why I have guards around me?" I asked.

I noticed that while I was at the resort. I was waiting for their movements, but they were not doing anything.

They nodded. "If my life is in danger, does this mean my classmates are also in danger?" I asked.

And they nodded again. "But do not worry. We assigned some of our team to watch them. They might use them against you." Dad explained.

Their lives must be in danger because of me. I do not want to hear any news that they got hurt because of me.

"Do I need to go back? Before they could hurt them?" I asked them.

They might use them against me.

"Would you do that?" Ali asked.

Can I go back and leave them? I can. But I am not sure.

"Is there any way to solve it?" I asked for their opinion.

"You can't leave this city now?" Mel asked me.

I slowly nodded. "I still want to stay here." I replied.

"Do not worry. We will make sure of their safety. We will put some barriers between their houses and signals. They will be fine," Dad seconded it. "Just do what you want to do." He added.

"Leave it to us. We will do our best to stop them. We will catch them." Mavin said, assuring me.

I nodded. I know they will be able to do it. They are called Lycan Guardians for a reason. I trust them. I would also not let them hurt any of my friends.

After the long meeting, we headed back to our house. I lay on the sofa and fished my phone out. I went to our group message a while ago and read what they discussed. I typed a message saying I wanted them to care for themselves and minimize going out too much for a while.

After that, I got tons of questions from them. I got two to four questions per person. That's how noisy they are. The boys kept on sending voice messages as well.

'Just follow me. I do not think we are safe outside. I cannot tell you the reason, but I hope you can follow me. If you need to go outside, ensure you are with someone.' I replied before turning the Wi-Fi off to avoid them questioning me more. I am sure they will ask me tomorrow. I will deal with them tomorrow.

I was about to turn on the television when I received a text message from Sunny.

'Are we in trouble? Are you okay?' She texted.

One of the reasons why I can't leave this city is because of her. We still need to finish watching the new drama we are watching. That's it.

'Kind of. I am okay. You will follow what I suggested, right?' I texted her back.

I opened the television and found something I could watch. My notification rings again.

'Of course! I know you are telling us what is best for us. Do not worry about our classmates. They will follow you. We trust each other.'

Instead of messaging her back, I focused on the documentary I chose. I do not want to make our conversation long. I feel like I could not stop it at all. I am starting to wait for her messages. And I could not stop replying to her. She is so chatty.

It's not like I am still sour about her liking Mavin. She just has a sour taste. Blind, no wonder she ended up with that jerk.

"Steven, would you like some snacks? Mom made some." I heard my mom say from the kitchen.

"Yes, mom." I replied.

"Call your dad and your brother." Mom responded.

I sent a quick message to them, telling them to come down if they wanted a snack. After a few seconds, I could hear their doors opening.

"Steven, Sunny called and asked me what was wrong with you." Mavin shared.

I glance at him. "Why?" I asked back.

"What, why? Am I supposed to know the reason? Sunny just messaged me, and I do not know about it." He replied.

"You guys always talk, right? She would be sharing that right away." I responded.

Mavin smirked at me. That's the sign he will tease me. What did I say now?

"You guys did not talk today?" He asked while he was wriggling his eyebrows. I sat on the stool and did not bother answering my brother. "Oh, I knew it. Why are you mad at me when you guys are not talking? If you want to talk to her, then send her a message. Please do not get mad at me. Why so jealous?" He teased.

"Or you could just invite her to go here." Dad suggested as if he knew what was happening.

"Do you want Mavin to fetch her?" Mom also suggested.

I looked at them in disbelief.

"What?" They asked.

"We talked, okay?" I told them. "I just simply told Mavin that they always talk, knowing Sunny, she would be sharing it right away. It is not because I am jealous or what." I explained myself.

Mom and dad nodded their heads, finally understanding my point. But Mavin is still looking at me suspiciously.

"I just messaged our group chat to minimize going outside. If they want to go outside, they must be with someone because I do not think we are safe. I couldn't tell them about our situation, so I had to leave them on read." I explained it again.

Mavin nodded. "Okay, I understand now. You should have told me about that already. Why do you have to act like you are feigning ignorance." He said, laughing at me.

"Because you love teasing me." I replied.

He clicked his tongue and signed a check mark. "You got it," He responded. "But honestly, do not think of returning to our town if you do not want to. We will, as previously stated, take care of them. They are on our watch twenty-four-seven." He added.

"Are they important to you now?" Mom asked next to me.

I nodded. "They are nice, and I do not want them to get hurt because of me." I told them.

"They would not hate you if they learned the truth, right?" Dad suddenly asked. "Let's think in advance since our enemy knows you, and they are targeting you. There is a big possibility that they will try to out your secret, our secret. Are you ready to face their reactions or their comments?"

I fell silent. Yeah, my classmates are friendly to me. Because they do not know who I am. Would they still like me if they knew the truth? Would they still treat me better? Or would they hate me and want me to vanish? Would Sunny still approach me like she used to do? Or would she look at me disgustedly?

"I do not know." I only replied.

"You should not have asked him that," Mom scolded Dad. "You are making him worried." She added.

"I am sorry, son," Dad apologized. "I just want you to face the truth. I do not want to feed you some fairytale story about humans liking werewolves. There are still people who think of us as cursed people. They hate us and will try their best to kill us. They might not do it now, but what if they learned about it?"

"They must treat you well because they still don't know about you. We are not sure if they learned about us."

"Still, they are still human. You must be alert and not trust people too much. Trust the people you think are kind, but still, be cautious. This is just my advice as your father."
