Chapter 25: Chapter 25
Olivia's pov:
I was so scared and worried about Sam's carefree attitude! I hoped this was not another trap of his. And if it was then I was not going to fall for it this time! I had to be on my guard no matter what all the time!
I could not find any reason to trust him after all that he did to me, so I kept myself on a watch out for any suspicious activity from him.
Every time we took a step further, my legs started to give way and the scorching effects of the sun drained me to the fullest! When was this nightmare going to end?
To make matters even worse for me, the water in my bottle was down to its last drop. My tongue was screaming in thirst. It was so dry that I could feel like falling off my mouth. I needed the sensation of cool water in my mouth as soon as possible.
The Australian sun was too intense for me.
I looked over at Sam behind me, drinking water from a bottle that looked filled to the top with refreshing water.
Looking at Sam gulp all the water, drove me crazy and I desperately needed that bottle. I would do anything for that water!
"Sam give me that bottle!" I ordered while holding my throat that was dried up like a well in the summer.
Hearing my order, Sam stopped sipping the water and looked me with a subtle smile on his face. I had a super bad feeling about that smile. I did not know but there was something very evil about that smile.
He shook the bottle causing the water to move vigorously while I continuously stared at it.
"What's the magic words?" he asked.
Was he kidding me? Why did I not see this coming? Currently, when I was desperate for water, he was trying to act lame. Well, what else could I expect from a 'fake' like him?
"Sam, I do not have time for your nonsense, just give me the water already!" I stubbornly replied.
There was no way I was going to plead before him. He did not deserve it at all!
After numerously refusing to hand over the bottle unless I said the magic word, I got annoyed and charged at him.
I held one of his hand with a tight grip and started reaching out for the bottle which was in his other hand!
I thought I could snatch the bottle easily from him, but he kept stretching his arm backwards, preventing me from reaching it.
Him being tall really put little old me at a huge disadvantage but I kept on going. I kept on screaming to hand over the bottle, but he would not listen at all. Luckily, the road was empty, so no one came to interfere with us.
In a final attempt to get the bottle, I pulled the front part of his hair that was wet to the touch as the scorching heat caused him to sweat a lot.
He groaned in pain and loosened his grip from the bottle, causing it to fall onto the dusty ground.
I snatched the bottle in light speed and teased him after doing so.
He looked pretty annoyed, but I did not care. I was finally able to not care which was a first for me. I did not feel like overthinking anything anymore at that moment. I did not know if this would last any longer, but it was nice to feel it for the first time.
I unscrewed the cap of the bottle and drank each and every drop of water which left Sam very angry.
As he stepped forward to rebuke me, the both of us heard a small voice near us, "What are y'all doing?"
I realized that behind us was a group of small kids with a cricket bat and ball held by two of them.
I was so surprised to see a sign of life in the middle of what looked nowhere. But that did not cheer me up as they were children. How were they going to help us get back? We needed transportation which these kids could not arrange for us!
"Are the two of you, a couple?" one of the kids asked out of the blue.
I blushed upon hearing that question and quickly maintained my distance from Sam. I took a good look at Sam who seemed unbothered by the entire situation and had a slight smile forming at one corner of his lips.
What was he up to?
"Couple? No, kids we really are absolutely not!" I explained while looking at Sam, gesturing to back me up.
He stood still, not listening to me or my gestures with his smile expanding. I could not believe that was happening.
The kids looked at me with suspicious eyes, indicating that they did not believe me whatsoever because of Sam's reluctance to support my statement!
"Liar, liar pants on fire!" they started singing while dancing around in circles.
This was the worst thing to happen to me. I stared at them in awe while they continued to sing.
I guess there was no way I could change their mind alone. If only that Sam could pitch in, but he did not want to for some reason.
Once upon a time, he declared that being my friend made him uncomfortable and that I should stay away. So, shouldn't he have instantly denied the couple accusation by these kids?
If Sam were a math problem, I swear no one could solve him. He was too complicated to understand.
"See he did not say no..." one of the kids teased.
I was going to say something, but I was cut off by a loud scream, "What are you kids doing here?"
I looked up to find a woman marching towards us along with a guy who I presumed was her husband, judging by the rings on their finger.
She walked up and twisted on of the kids' ear and rebuked him while looking at the other kids, "Didn't I tell y'all to play near the house?"
I realize that the woman was none other than the mom of the child whose ear she was holding tight! She looked very angry and I was sure that the kid would be in a lot of trouble!
That scene immediately reminded me of the times when my mom would twist my ear whenever I would be mischievous or a pain to her. Be it the mall, at home or even at a park, she would not care and humiliate me in public.
I felt quite depressed, but my attention quickly shifted towards the parents who questioned me, "Who are you? Kidnappers? What are you trying to do with these kids?
I popped my eyes and denied her accusation while Sam too pitched in. Thank god for that. How on earth did that lady come to that conclusion? It was very scary to hear that.
"Mom, they are a lost couple!" the kid opened his mouth.
I stepped up and properly explained the situation to the parents as the kids were not so trustworthy. Where did they get that couple idea?
The parents got a hold of the situation that Sam and I were in. They began discussing something with each other while Sam and I stood with the kids at a distance. I really hoped that they were not planning on calling the police on us!
After a moment of discussion, the mom came up to us and placed her hand on my shoulder with a blank look on her face.
I was not expecting anything so the sudden placement of her hand on my shoulder caught me off guard.
I wondered what was on her mind and I was hoping that it was going to be something good as I was not in a condition to handle anymore drama.
