Chapter 58: Chapter 58
CHAPTER 58
THE WEIGHT OF THE TRUTH
DOMINIC
It was surreal; I couldn’t wrap my head around it. The anger and sadness inside me were like a tempest, tearing through my veins. My number one enemy, Zack Barnett, had done the unthinkable—he had kidnapped Rebecca. The evidence was overwhelming, leaving no doubt in my mind that he was the culprit. He had always despised me, always found pleasure in tormenting me, and now he had taken away the one person who meant the world to me.
“So you are positive it was that bastard, Zack?” Declan asked, rubbing his jaw.
“I am sure of it as I am sure of every breath I take. Now, I have another problem. I’ve been called to the agency in an emergency.”
“Why?”
“Apparently the head of the intelligence agency has been kidnapped and is nowhere to be found,”
The one person who had believed in me from the beginning, who had seen the potential in me and given me the chance to become the best agent I could be, was now in danger.
“However, his identity was and still is a secret, Dominic. What are you going to do? Are you taking over the case?” Declan asked.
My anxiety had reached a fever pitch.
“I’m going there Declan, but I’m going to hand in my resignation. No one else has priority but Rebecca.”
Prior to meeting Rebecca, my life was quite monotonous, lacking in excitement and joy; however, with her arrival, her warm smile and infectious laughter, things took a turn for the better. In a world full of darkness and despair, she played a vital role in my life by being my constant support, my anchor, who motivated me to keep fighting and gave me a reason to keep going. The light that had been shining so brightly in my life, serving as a beacon of hope, had been cruelly extinguished by the embodiment of evil that I had made a solemn oath to vanquish through any means necessary.
It was a cruel twist of fate, forcing me to make an impossible choice. On one hand, there was the agency, the duty that I had sworn to uphold. My skills were unmatched, and I was the best chance they had at rescuing our boss. But on the other hand, there was Rebecca, my love, my everything. She had become my top priority, and I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving her in the hands of that monster.
Torn between my duty and my heart, I felt a sense of despair unlike anything I had ever experienced before. Throughout my life, I had been the one who held the reins, the one who could think strategically and come up with a solution for any circumstance. At that moment, I realized I had no power or control over the situation.
In the end, there was no choice. Rebecca had to come first. I would give up everything—the gun, the badge, my identity as an agent—to ensure her safety. The agency could find another way to save our boss, but Rebecca only had me. I would assemble my own team, those I trusted implicitly, and we would embark on a mission to rescue her, no matter the cost.
“What do you mean, you’re not going on a mission? Our boss needs the best of the best and you’re it, Stone!” said the Operations Chief. “What the hell are you doing?” He continued seeing me turning over the gun and my badge.
“I quit, Johnson! The woman I love, Rebecca Holland, is in great danger and the agency has made me choose. So I chose! I chose her!” I said, determined not to let my guard down. Johnson’s stare had darkened.
“Dominic, I need you to reconsider going on this mission. We can’t afford to lose the agency head. We need him back, and your skills are crucial for the success of this rescue operation.”
“Johnson, I’ve made up my mind. I’m no longer interested in risking my life for this agency. I won’t let myself be swayed, not even for a second. Rebecca needs me, and I’m not going to waste any more time here.” I said firmly and just when I was about to turn around, Johnson sighed.
“I understand your loyalty to Rebecca, Dominic. But you have to understand the gravity of this situation. The agency head is in grave danger, and we need every capable agent we have to ensure our chief’s safe return.”
“I know you are worried, Johnson, but I have given my word to Rebecca and I won’t go back on it. She needs me, and I won’t let anything or anyone stand in the way of that.” I tried one more time.
There were a few seconds of silence, and then Johnson handed me a folder marked Top Secret. “What is this?” I asked with curiosity.
“Dominic, there’s something I need to tell you. It’s about the agency’s head’s identity. I have no other choice but to reveal it to you. Maybe, just maybe, seeing who… she really is, will change your mind.”
Suddenly, everything around me came to a standstill, and it felt like time had stopped. The only sound I could hear was the rhythmic beating of my heart, in sync with the ticking of the clock on the wall.
Her picture was there, of extraordinary clarity. Her chocolate-colored hair, deep-set, squinting eyes, without the smile that won me over, though. “Dominic, that in the picture is our boss!” Johnson continued, and his voice was like hammers in my ears.
“What are you talking about, Johnson? Is this some kind of grim joke? How could she possibly be the head of the agency?” I said, taking a step back.
“I wish it were a joke, Dominic. But it’s the truth. The agency head is Rebecca Holland. The second I heard she was the woman you love and you quit the agency to save her, I had to reveal her identity. I knew you would reconsider,”
“Rebecca? This can’t be... How is this even possible? I... I don’t understand.” I tried to talk, but I was too damn shocked.
“It’s a long story, Dominic. One that involves trust, secrecy, and the weight of responsibility. Rebecca has been protecting us and you all this time, leading this agency from the shadows. She couldn’t reveal her identity to anyone, not even you,” Johnson explained.
I was so struggling to process the revelation.
“But... but she’s my Rebecca. I can’t just abandon her. I did not know... I almost jumped on you, Johnson. I can’t believe I almost hurt you over this.”
“I understand your shock, Dominic. But now you see why we can’t let anything happen to her. She needs us, and we need her. We can’t abandon her in her time of need. She needs you, Dominic!”
“You’re right, Johnson. I can’t turn my back on her. I won’t let anything cloud my judgment. Rebecca has dedicated her life to protecting us, and now it’s our turn to protect her. And she is the woman I love, damn it! I’m in, Johnson. Let’s bring her back home, no matter the cost.”
I stood there, frozen in disbelief, as the words reverberated through my mind. How could it be? How could she, of all people, turn out to be the head of the agency I had dedicated my life to? The shock coursed through me like an electric current, leaving me dazed and questioning everything I thought I knew.
Her name was Rebecca, and she was more than just a figurehead. She was the woman I loved with every fiber of my being, the one who had captured my heart from the very moment I rescued her from those savage wolves in the dark woods that night. In that crucial moment, when I fought tooth and nail to protect her, I felt an indescribable connection, a bond that transcended reason and defied all logic. Little did I know then that our destinies were intertwined in ways I couldn’t have fathomed.
When I first laid eyes on her, bruised and battered, her eyes reflecting both fear and gratitude, I couldn’t resist the urge to shield her from harm. It was as if some invisible force compelled me to safeguard her, to be her protector. And so, without a second thought, I leaped into action, fighting off those wild beasts with all the strength and courage I could muster. In that chaotic moment, time stood still, and all that mattered was her safety.
As the days turned into weeks, our connection deepened. We spent countless hours talking, sharing our dreams, fears, and aspirations. In those quiet moments, I caught glimpses of her genuine spirit, her unyielding determination, and unwavering courage. There was an undeniable magnetism between us, a gravitational pull that neither of us could resist. I knew then, with absolute certainty, that I had found my soulmate. My Luna.
But now, standing here, faced with the reality that Claire was not just an ordinary agent but the head of the very agency that had become my second family, a profound sense of duty washed over me. The shock gradually transformed into a fierce determination, a willpower to rescue her from Zack’s clutches, the cunning mastermind who sought to manipulate and control her for his own sinister purposes.
I had always prided myself on being a man of principles driven by a strong moral compass. And now, it was clear that my principles demanded action. I couldn’t simply stand by and watch as the woman I loved, the woman who had captured my heart in the depths of the wilderness, was held captive by a man consumed by power and greed.
With each passing day, my resolve grew stronger. I meticulously planned my every move, analyzing every detail, determined to outsmart Zack and his nefarious schemes. I knew it wouldn’t be easy; the road ahead was fraught with danger and uncertainty. But for Rebecca, for the love we shared, I was willing to risk it all.
As I embarked on my mission to rescue her, it filled my mind with a swirling mix of fear, hope, and unyielding love. The bond we shared gave me strength, fueled my determination, and reminded me why I had chosen this path. It was not just about saving her, but about preserving the purity of our connection, the depth of our love.
And so, I set forth, braving countless obstacles, facing down adversaries, and navigating treacherous terrain. And I did it alone. Zack should be afraid, because Rebecca and I shared a love that knew no bounds, a love that transcended time and space propelled me. It was a love that had been forged in the face of danger, tested by the trials of life, and emerged stronger and more resilient.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, I stood before the imposing fortress that held Claire captive. The tension in the air was palpable as I prepared to confront Zack, knowing that this would be the ultimate test of my love, my strength, and my unwavering commitment.
