Chapter 57: Chapter 57

CHAPTER 57

IN THE MIST

REBECCA

The time during which I was unconscious was a mystery to me. Suddenly, my surroundings were engulfed in pitch black darkness, immediately following a sharp blow that I felt on the back of my head. I was currently being held captive, unable to see because of a blindfold, and my whereabouts, unknown to me, but I was confident that God was aware of my circumstances.

The captors had me bound with my hands tied behind my back and also secured to a chair, rendering me immobile. As I struggled to release myself from the rope, the rough texture had caused pain and discomfort to my hands and feet.

All I could remember was Dominic’s party premiere and the huge, senseless fight I had with him. The questions he asked me and the way he looked at me in pain got me into this mess. I needed to stay focused and alert so I could find out who my captor was. Because one thing I knew for sure about this strange situation was that someone kidnapped me.

As soon as the musty odor reached my nostrils, I knew I had to be inside a warehouse or some similar type of storage facility. The surrounding air was so dense that I was experiencing difficulty in breathing properly. The peacefulness of my solitude was broken when I heard footsteps approaching, causing my already alert senses to become even more heightened. I could hear high-heeled shoes echoing through the hallway, growing increasingly louder with each step the person took. That sound of that particular walking seemed familiar to me, as if I had heard it before somewhere.

“Well, well, well, well! Who do we have here? If it isn’t Miss Rebecca Holland,”

“I know you! I know your voice,” I shouted, shifting my gaze from side to side, trying somehow to glimpse under the blindfold.

Her voice! It sounded so familiar. But where have I heard that voice before? Everything was so foggy in my mind.

“You try in vain to free yourself, but can’t you see that the more you do it, the more you hurt yourself? Stop trying, of course you know me”

An icy hand grabbed my chin, holding it up, and in one quick move, pulled the blindfold off. It took me some time to adjust to that almost dark place. A few rays of sunlight were trying to break through the wooden wall. As my vision adjusted to my surroundings, it shocked me to realize who was holding me captive.

“Megan...” I almost whispered her name in shock.

“In the flesh, dear!” I heard her scornful voice.

“But why? Why this hatred against me?”

“Just business, nothing personal. But first I must call your Dominic and worry him a little. What do you say?

“I’m saying you’re crazy, you...”

I didn’t have time to finish what I had to say when she slapped me right in the face, leaving me with a pain so hard to bear. I fell backwards and hurt my back and ribs. A gasp escaped my throat at the amusement of this evil woman. I did not know she had such resentment towards me. I hardly knew her.

“Don’t talk nonsense, or I’ll finish you right now!” she shouted, the echo scattering all around the warehouse.

“Then do it and get it over with!” I challenged her without knowing what she was capable of. Right then, she pulled out a 44 Magnum gun and pointed to my temple. The cold barrel sent icy shivers throughout my body. But nothing made me look vulnerable in front of her, even though I was in this position.

“Oh, not so fast, my little white dove. I have to take advantage of you first. How about $5 million?” she mocked, laughing frantically, letting her madness control her. Nothing I was seeing now resembled the Megan I knew a while ago. How could I not have noticed?

“You’re crazy! Who’s gonna give you all that money?” I asked, rather amused, which infuriated her beyond measure. Another heavy slap smacked against my cheek and again threw me along with the chair they tied me on.

“I warned you to watch your mouth. In fact, you’re priceless. And the man who wanted you here will be very pleased when he sees you.”

“Can I even know why?” I asked as I struggled to get a better position. Megan then picked me up and looked me in the eye.

“We know all about you, agent Holland. There’s no need to hide anymore. The question is whether Dominic knows? It doesn’t matter anyway, because you’re not getting out of here alive.”

I then heard her walk her heels across the room, surrounding me several times. This woman was crazy, but somehow I had to keep my sanity to find out why she kidnapped me and who was behind it. It was clear that she wasn’t capable of doing something like this on her own.

And that she knew my identity seriously made me wonder. Where did she get so much information? Unless there was a mole in the agency. Only if I could get in touch with Olivia. But the way I know my agents, they already know where I am and they’re planning a rescue mission. In fact, they’ll send the most prepared agent to get me out as we speak.

My mind was still foggy from the solution this woman had put me to sleep with, but I was lucid enough to come up with my own escape or attack plan.

They trained me for such situations and knew not to lose my temper. At the same time, I could feel my captor going crazy about it. It was not the time to make her angry.

“Why are you doing this? What’s in it for you?” I asked again, trying to divert the discussion to my field so I can learn more details. It was hard to read her because of my dizziness.

“I’m sure you already know Zack Barnett,” she explained as she nonchalantly walked around me. “I know you two have already met some time ago and most of the story you probably know. It’s been so long since I asked him to give me immortality. Just like Dominic got it, only I really want it.”

Her comment stopped my breathing for a few seconds, and I stared at her for a bit. Her evil eyes watched me with a thirst for revenge.

“You know about Dominic...?” I asked, exhausted from her blows.

“Of course I do. And he knows I know, which is why I even joined him for a while. I hoped he would love me and grant me the gift of immortality, but he didn’t. I’m a vengeful woman and it’s not good to have me for an enemy and Dominic did just that. He came to me for all kinds of stupid reasons. That it’s not what I think it is, that he can’t condemn me to darkness and a lot of other nonsense that activated the other Megan in me. Then I met Zack and things changed. At first I thought he was going to kill me, but I took a chance. When he heard how close I was to the man who caused his daughter’s death, he agreed with me. When she’s avenged, I’ll get my immortality. I agreed. Then you came along and Dominic fell in love. So you ruined all the plans because Dominic activated his inner wolf again to save you. I needed him vulnerable to be defeated. He does not know how much power he possesses. If he did, he’d tear us to pieces. And that’s because his father picked a hell of a time to turn him. But you won’t live to tell your lover that, so you’re no danger to us. Just a miserable mortal.” She said with her mocking laugh.

God, there were so many things I didn’t know. Even Megan was unaware that I was a survivor, so the more I learnt, the better. I could help Dominic. He was probably already worried.

“What do you mean, he picked a hell of a time?” I asked with my voice cracked and with pain all over.

“Hmm, aren’t you very curious? Anyway, if you won’t get out of here alive, I might as well tell you. Zack won’t let you out of here, so you’re no danger to him. This story goes way back. When Jane got killed, Zack’s world ended. He took revenge on the entire pack, even his wife. He killed anyone who got in his way. Including Tom, your late fiancé, for disobeying his orders to kill Eve. Too bad you didn’t die then. You’d have saved us a lot of trouble. Anyway, the past unfortunately can’t be changed. As Dominic was on the verge of death himself, his father made a radical decision that you probably know his wife didn’t agree with. But they had no choice. What neither you nor he knew is that the night Dominic got turned was a full moon. That caused many changes in his body, and I don’t just mean the bloodthirsty werewolf. Since then on full moon nights, and not just full moon nights, Dominic can turn into a killing machine, a Lycan. But he won’t know that. A Lycan, my dear ignorant friend, is a kind of hybrid, but a much stronger one. He can turn whenever the hell it wants. Until now, Dominic lived under the impression that he could only transform under a full moon. Fate made Zack do everything under that full moon just so Dominic wouldn’t be aware of his power. Killing Tom, attacking you in that improvised forest near his studio. Do you understand the difference? If he knew he could do it anytime...”

I wanted to scream, to get free, to warn Dominic. Unaware of his own power, he was walking into a trap. But there was nothing I could do about it except hope to escape with my life. I knew Zack was dangerous, especially as he was a grieving father, but I had to hold my ground.

I needed to see through this mist, or it was all going to turn into a tragedy.
