Chapter 15: Chapter 15

Trembling in my position, my mind couldn't think right. I didn't know how much the trauma of that horrible night had brought to me.

Soon enough, Uncle Silas was already beside me, embracing me as he lifted me from that position. It was only then that I realized, tears were pouring heavily from my eyes.

"Shhh... it's fine now Maive, you're safe." Uncle Silas comforted me as he carried me away from the place.

Before getting out of that scene, my eyes landed on the werewolf that I had stabbed. His eyes were closed but I was surprised to see an arrow piercing through his head. I knew from that moment on that they were dead.

"U-Uncle Silas... t-there were b-blood everywhere," I said in between my sobs.

He embraced me even tighter. "You only protected yourself... You'll be fine, Maive."

Somehow the heavy feeling that I had within me was slightly lifted up after hearing those words. The fear of danger has also subsided now knowing that I have Uncle Silas with me and that he protected me earlier.

"You're brave, Maive... Stop crying now," Uncle Silas then placed me on the wooden bench in front of our house. It was the moment that I realized we were already near the house.

My tears continued to pour, not believing everything that happened. If only my knees did not weaken during that time, I probably succeeded in getting away. I just couldn't take the sight of blood... because my father was once in that situation. He was killed, filled with blood.

"What happened?" Aunt Vera, full out of worry, hurriedly went towards me. She, then, hugged me despite not still knowing the story behind my tears.

So this is how it feels to have someone in a life and death situation.

"She was attacked by rogues near the border." Uncle Silas said which I did not focus on because his words were foreign to me. As if I did not understand any of it.

"Oh God, you should be more careful next time, Maive. I don't know what to do if I lost you." Aunt Vera said with full of concern and I was touched by her words.

It feels like I found my home. Uncle Silas walked somewhere while Aunt Vera remained by my side as she kept comforting me, giving me soothing words.

I sighed remembering my father and how he was worried every time I went home dirty or with bruises from the bullies. I could still remember him crying, blaming himself for not being a good father but he didn't know that he was the best father in the whole world and I'm so proud of him.

Not long after Uncle Silas came back with a glass of water as he gave it to me. I took it and had a sip in the glass.

"I feel better now, Aunt, Uncle. Thank you." I said to them with a grateful smile.

"It is our responsibility to take care of you, Maive. You are our only child now and I don't want something like this to happen again, okay?" Aunt Vera said and her voice sounded like it is compulsory to do so.

I nodded with a smile, she really sounds like a mother and I like the way she cares for me. I felt like I have a real mother again.

Aunt Vera smiled, "Go back inside, Maive and take a nap."

Again, I nodded, "Yes Aunt." I said and bowed my head out of respect to them, then I ran fast inside but before I completely closed the door, I accidentally heard them talking which made me curious.

"Does he know?" From this distance I heard Aunt Vera asked. I realized that even my hearing has gotten stronger. But... who was she referring to?

What is it that he knows? Does it have something to do with me? Probably not, I don't know anyone else rather than Tobias and Arman. Maybe she was referring to one of them..? Maybe.

I didn't hear a response from Uncle Silas but I heard Aunt Vera reacted as if Uncle Silas' response wasn't good.

"It won't happen again, Vera. We cannot lose Maive but we have to double her safety. I don't know why those rogues were very enticed to her, there must be something... no matter what it was, we have to protect her, we are her parents now." I heard Uncle Silas said with a bothered voice.

Rogues? Are those werewolves I encountered earlier called rogues? I am too, confused why those werewolves said that my scent was calling for them. Do I smell like food?

Oh damn, they are werewolves of course I am a meat in their eyes. They are not human after all.

"We have to be ready, hedidn'tlikewhathappened." I didn't clearly hear Uncle Silas' last words because I decided to completely close the door but quietly so they wouldn't be interrupted in their conversation.

It was bad to eavesdrop, but it is worse to interrupt the adults in their conversation. To be honest, my heart was warmed hearing Uncle Silas speaking earlier. They wanted to protect me because they felt like real parents. I could say that they really wanted to have a child and since they couldn't, they wanted me to fulfill that, they wanted me to be their child that is why they are doing their responsibilities as parents.

However, they don't need to. Thinking about it... I felt like I was just a burden but if it pleases them I am not in a position to protest.

I smiled, knowing that I have a family I could rely on and I could trust in my life.

After that incident, I was never allowed to go near the forest. Aunt Vera and Uncle Silas have forbidden me. Because of that reason, I was never able to help and joined Uncle Silas in harvesting and hunting.

They were afraid that I would encounter such things as before. I have never asked them about werewolves because I was afraid that a topic like that would only lead to me telling them that my father is a werewolf too.

However, from what I recall in that incident, Uncle Silas seemed not to be surprised by the presence of a werewolf, especially from what I heard in his conversation with Aunt Vera, they are aware of the existence of werewolf. Then... humans turning into wolves is actually a reality. If that's the case, there were some humans out there who are werewolves too, like my father.

And a part of me wanted to find the truth of my family's history.
