Chapter 39: Chapter 39
Throughout the day, Betty kept staring at Flora with an inquisitive look, as if her mere existence was a great mystery. Even while working, she would glance at Flora from time to time.
Feeling uncomfortable with Betty's scrutiny, Flora rolled her eyes and said in exasperation, "Betty, will you ever stop? Don't worship me like a deity, okay?!"
"I don't worship you like a deity, I see you as a ghost..." Betty murmured. "I can't help but feel that you're not real, even though you have body temperature." As she spoke, Betty reached out and touched Flora's face.
Feeling overwhelmed, Flora turned around, thinking that she should keep her distance from Betty. After taking a few steps, she turned back without much hope and gossiped, "Betty, how long has that woman been locked up here?"
Betty looked around and, seeing that no one was there, whispered, "She has been locked up for over a year."
"For so long?" Flora gasped.
If she had been locked up for over a year and wasn't released, did Maxwell intend to keep her locked up for a lifetime? At the same time, she thought of herself. Was she also going to be kept here like this? And what about Henry?
"Maxwell, he has an obsession with captivity," Flora murmured.
Betty spoke out in fear, "Miss Chiyoko is the niece of the Yota Gang's leader, Itou Tokugawa. If he dares to imprison her, it means we shouldn't provoke Big Young Master."
So Chiyoko is a Japanese girl, Flora thought to herself.
She didn't expect Betty to know so much, so she couldn't help but ask eagerly, "Is that Japanese girl really involved with the Second Young Master?"
Betty spat, "The Second Young Master would never do something like that. She climbed into his bed herself, and unfortunately, the Big Young Master caught them in the act."
Clearly, the handsome and charming Oliver was seen as the perfect man in the eyes of the maids, and everyone supported him.
"She was caught in bed?" Flora asked again, incredulous.
Betty nodded and sighed, "Miss Chiyoko used to come here often. She was beautiful and could speak fluent English. Everyone liked her."
"Does the Big Young Master love her?" Flora asked involuntarily, only to startle herself with the question.
Why did she even ask that? Whether Maxwell loves her or not is none of her business. Besides, Chiyoko is his fiancée, so of course he loves her!
Flora quickly changed the subject, "What I meant was, did the Big Young Master later harm her? Did he continue to abuse her?" Just like he abused her, using cruel methods!
Betty thought for a moment and said, "I don't think so. After the Big Young Master locked her on the third floor, he never set foot there again."
After all, Chiyoko is the person Maxwell loves. She is more fortunate than herself, Flora thought in her heart.
Seeing her silence, Betty cautioned her again, "So, you shouldn't provoke the Big Young Master anymore. You really can't afford to. The consequences for those who fall into his hands are extremely tragic, with no hope of survival..."
No hope of survival? Flora's heart trembled. What about Henry? Does that mean he is also facing a dead end?
"Flora, did you hear me? Miss Chiyoko is a forbidden secret in the hearts of the Big Young Master and the Second Young Master. Now that I've told you what happened, you are not allowed to be curious anymore, and especially not to mention it in front of others. Otherwise, you will not only bring harm to yourself but also to me!" Betty cautioned anxiously.
Flora murmured a vague response, finally understanding why Oliver had flown to England so early in the morning. It was indeed to escape! If he didn't love Chiyoko and they had an innocent relationship, why would he need to flee?
Betty's statement that there would be "no hope of survival" frightened Flora to the core. Is Maxwell truly such a cruel person? There was no need to doubt it, considering what he had done to her during these past days. Betty wasn't trying to scare her, Maxwell was truly a man who shouldn't be provoked!
However, she couldn't just stand by and watch Henry die. Besides the necklace, was there anything else that could save him? Maxwell had said that only the necklace would work! She had to go back to the White Family and retrieve the necklace!
Flora rushed to the second-floor study of Maxwell, only to find that he hadn't returned yet. Helplessly, she turned back to the first floor. As she passed by the spiral staircase, her steps involuntarily stopped, and she silently stared in the direction of the third floor.
That poor woman! Did she still truly love Maxwell? After being imprisoned for so long, did she still hold such deep affection?
"Miss White, haven't you learned your lesson yet?" a cold voice resonated faintly beneath her feet.
Flora was startled, and she bent down to see Maxwell slowly walking up from the first floor.
Maxwell approached her, raising his slender fingers to gently caress her delicate jaw. A sinister voice escaped from his sensual lips, "Young girl, one day you will pay a painful price for your curiosity."
The chilling voice made Flora tremble and sent a tingling sensation through her scalp. This terrifying man, as if he crawled out of hell... she had violated his taboo more than once and even smashed a bottle on him? Was all of this done by her, Flora? Was all of this real?
"I... I need to discuss something with you..." Flora opened her mouth and stammered.
"Discuss something with me? You are not worthy!" Maxwell dropped her jaw and walked past her towards the bedroom.
"It's about the necklace!" Flora hurriedly called after him.
Indeed, Maxwell turned around, mocking her as he surveyed her, "Weren't you the one who claimed you would rather melt it with fire than give it to me? Why have you suddenly changed your mind?"
