Chapter 24: Chapter 24
Flora had anticipated this outcome when she came in, although she still didn't know what grudge she had with the Smith Family. But judging from Maxwell's hatred towards her, she knew that there would be no peaceful days ahead!
Flora steadied herself, took a deep breath, and fearlessly stared at Mrs. Smith, saying, "Mrs. Smith, I don't know why you hate me so much, or what I have done to betray the Smith Family?" She wanted to know, besides breaking off the engagement, had she done anything outrageous?
Joshua glared at her and sneered, "Flora, stop pretending here. If it weren't for you inciting Henry White, would he silently drive the Smith Family Group to ruin?"
Flora loved Henry White, and that was something he had known from the very beginning, and it was something he couldn't tolerate the most. To vent his anger and seek revenge on her, he had openly engaged in flirtations with various women to catch her attention!
"Henry...?" Flora murmured, then lifted her head to stare at him, eagerly asking, "What did Henry do? What did he do exactly?"
Could it be that the downfall of the Smith Family Group was caused by the White Family? Was it caused by Henry?
She suddenly remembered, that in the past, she begged Henry to help her get rid of Joshua, that disgusting man, and Henry had bitterly agreed. Could it be that from that moment on, Henry had been planning to bring down the Smith Family Group?
"You're still pretending here!" Mrs. Smith shouted. Thinking of the recent tragedy that had occurred in the Smith Family, tears welled up in Mrs. Smith's eyes, and she became deeply saddened.
Maxwell rested one hand on the back of the sofa, while raising a glass of red wine to his lips, sipping lightly. He stared at her expressionlessly and said, "Miss White, do you really not know? If that's true, then let me tell you."
"How could she not know!?" Joshua interrupted, "If she didn't know, she wouldn't have broken off the engagement right after the collapse of the Smith Family Group. She loved Henry White so much, how could she not know what he was up to?!"
Flora shook her head, scanning the people in front of her and innocently denying, "I don't know, I don't know anything!"
Maxwell got up from the sofa and strode over to her, looking down at her with a gentle yet cold voice, "While your future father-in-law was hospitalized, Henry White made secret moves against the Smith Family Group. Not only did he cause the collapse of the Smith Family Group, but he also caused the death of your future father-in-law and nearly took Joshua's life. So, do you think he deserves to die?"
Maxwell's sinister words struck deep into Flora's heart, and her expression became more and more astonished. Did Henry do all of this? Did he cause the downfall of the Smith Family Group, the death of Old Mr. Smith, and Joshua's broken leg?
The living room fell into silence, and only the faint sobbing of Mrs. Smith was evident.
Flora took an unsteady step back, resting her hands on the sofa to support her weakened body. Henry! It was Henry who had plunged her into this deep and fiery ordeal! He was supposed to help her but instead caused such a disaster. Not only did he make her live a non-human life, but he also made her lose her first night in this abusive game!
"I didn't mean to!" A few tears rolled down Flora's cheeks as she choked up. She never intended for anyone to die or for the Smith Family Group to collapse. She just wanted to annul the engagement, that's all!
"Now you're saying you didn't mean to," Joshua sneered. After this incident, his love for her had long turned into hatred. The depth of his love for her in the past was now matched by the intensity of his hatred.
"Let me out, I want to confront Brother Henry myself!" Flora shouted at Maxwell. She wanted to see Henry now and find out what had happened! Henry couldn't have done something so malicious!
"You think we'll just let you leave?" Maxwell said coldly, followed by a sinister laugh. "Besides, even if you do go out now, you might not be able to find your precious Brother Henry. Give up on that idea!"
"What have you done to Brother Henry?" Flora's heart skipped a beat as she glared at him.
Could something have happened to him? Yes! With Maxwell's vile personality, how could he possibly let him off? The more she thought about it, the more fearful Flora became. She hoped he wasn't suffering worse than she was!
"Don't worry, he's only slightly more miserable than you!" Maxwell felt good seeing her worried expression. Suddenly, he had another amusing idea, to separate them and make them watch each other's desperate struggle for survival. It would surely be entertaining!
"You bunch of bastards!" Flora screamed in despair, tears streaming down rapidly. They were not content with tormenting her, they wanted to torment Henry too? They were bastards!
"Shut up!" Mrs. Smith yelled, followed by a harsh slap across her face. "Who do you think you are, calling others bastards? Who's more of a bastard than you, Flora!?"
"I don't know, I don't know anything," Flora was thrown to the side, falling into the arms of Maxwell. She tightly grasped onto his clothes, like a drowning person clinging to a piece of driftwood. Sobbing loudly, she wailed, "I don't know anything! Why are you doing this to me? Why..."
Flora felt all the strength drain out of her body. She slumped weakly into Maxwell's arms, tears flowing continuously down her face and onto his chest.
Her cries grew weaker and eventually gave way to exhaustion as she fainted in Maxwell's embrace.
"Maxwell, is she going to be okay? Quickly, take her back to the room," Mrs. Smith, seeing her collapse, felt a mix of concern and unease take hold in her compassionate heart. She anxiously urged Maxwell.
