Chapter 33: Chapter 33
Emma’s POV
I spend the next few hours, worrying endlessly.
Lucas’s words, giving me a bitter headache. I already have a lot on my plate, and now this?
I try to call Lucas, it rings for a few torturous seconds. The wait getting to me, I throw my phone on the pillow lightly. Groaning in annoyance.
Why isn’t he picking up? He usually does.
Abruptly, I hear the bell ding. It’s not my phone, but my doorbell. I rush to the door, thinking it might be Lucas but I find an old man, dressed in a suit.
His hair turned grey due to old age, his cheekbones round and shiny.
“ Uh, who might you be? “ I ask, dumbfounded.
“ I’m Corner, Mr. Knight sent me. “ He announces, grinning.
“ You mean Lucas? “ I ask confirming.
He nods.
“ What for? “ I ask, quirking my brow in confusion.
“ Let me inside Miss and I’ll explain it all to you. “ He states.
I step away from the door, my body previously blocking the entrance.
He takes a seat.
“ Would you like anything? “ I ask, out of sheer politeness.
He bobs his head in no.
I then proceed to sit on the seat, opposite him. He lays down a bunch of papers on the coffee table.
“ Mr. Knight wanted me to give you a summary of all these. These are the cards, the record of the bank balance, previous transactions, a list of the property owned, and the multiple companies managed by late Mr. Noah. “ He says, presenting them to me one by one.
I look at all of those with my mouth wide open agape.
“Why…are you telling me all that? “ I ask, mindlessly.
“ Because all this was signed to your name before….Mr. Noah departed from this works. It’s all yours now Miss. “ He explains with a certain excitement.
This piece of information, to me, isn’t one to be happy with. I never wanted his money. Why did he have it all to my name?
‘ Live for me a little. ‘
The line repeats in my head. Maybe, Noah just wanted me to live freely. Without worrying about Tim or any expenses or bills. He just wanted for me to be happy, without caring for his own self.
Fresh tears form in my eye but I blink them away. Not wanting to cry in front of this strange man.
“ There is a problem though. You see, after Mr. Noah’s…death Mr. Night has been taking care of all the business for you. He didn’t want to burden you with all of the responsibilities so soon but it seems he suddenly changed his mind. He withdrew from your company, which he was previously managing, and wants me to inform you that now you are the CEO, the one responsible to all the people of the company and to the company itself. You can visit the office and see for yourself. “ He informs.
I just nod my head. It’s true, Lucas had been handling it all for me. I’ve upset him so much that now he isn’t even willing to help me.
I do not know how I will handle it on my own, I know nothing. I could hardly manage as his secretary.
“ And there is one last thing. This is a legal notice. “ He days extending a piece of paper forward. His voice losing its jolly nature, taking up a more serious tone.
“ If the child is aborted without clear notice to Mr. Lucas with a valid reason you will have to present the case in court provided that Mr. Lucas is willing to marry you and provide for the baby, Miss Emma you will need a solid reason and that too with proof. Nothing with proof will work, I’ve been a lawyer for more than twenty years, one of the best in the country. All I wish to tell you is, the court requires proof and that is something hard to find against a powerful man like Lucas. “ He states boldly.
“ I hope you take my advice. “ The old man says, before picking up his bag and leaving.
The door shuts, with a loud thud leaving me in a state of utter distress.
I call Lucas, again and again. But he doesn’t pick up.
I decide to match straight to his office. I reach there in 30 minutes. I walk straight to the receptionist.
“ I need to meet Lucas. “ I state.
“ Mr. Knight and everyone does but the question is do you have an appointment. “ She asks, in a weird manner.
“ Umm No. But it’s urgent. “ I announce.
She rolls her eyes at that.
“ Again, everyone says that. Be innovative darling, come up with fresh talks. I’ve heard this one a lot. “ She rambles.
“ But I need to go there. “ I explain.
“ I’m not stopping you. “ She states, busy in her cellphone. Not looking at me at all.
I stare at her, amazed by her ridiculous behavior.
“ Look, I’ll try to stop you. You’ll argue with me. Then you’ll end u running towards the elevator anyway and by the time I stop you, you will be standing in front of Mr. Knight anyway. So I’ll make it easy. You can go. “ She replies with an award-winning smile.
I still look at her, incredibly perplexed.
I decide to ignore the ridiculously amazing character in front of me and run toward the elevator.
I reach the top floor and scurry away trying to find his office.
On one giant door see his initials. Without thinking much, I barge in.
“ What is wrong with you? “ I scream.
Just then, my eyes absorb the scene in front. He is currently having a meeting with two other men.
“ Shouldn’t I be the one asking the same question, woman? Who let her in any way? “ He asks, to no one in particular.
“ Must be one of the nut cases Mr. Knight. You sleep with these ladies for a night and they come crawling to you expecting more. Greedy, and very. “ The man beside him remarks.
I feel a little hurt by his opinion and to my surprise, Lucas doesn’t stop him.
“ Can’t help but agree with you. “ Lucas chimes, eyeing me cautiously for a reaction.
A painful expression crosses my face for a second and then I look down, to hide my tears.
“ If there is something important. I suggest you wait in the lobby. “ He comments, quite comfy. His voice was quite high, lacking any sort of warmness in it.
I nod and leave.
I wait in the lobby for several hours.
The daylight fades away and dusk takes over. The moon arises, yet is covered by the misty clouds soon. The night is dark and I feel a little cold, waiting for him all day long.
The glass door slides open and in walks Lucas boldly. Walking with a confident aura, as if he owns the place. Well, technically he does.
“ Speak. I don’t have all day. “ He states in an authoritative voice, looking at his wristwatch to prove a point.
“ Why would you send me a legal notice?? Why are you even doing this Lucas, you know we can’t be together! “ I cry out.
“ We can’t? That’s what you think and to me, it sounds pretty irrelevant right now. Tell me, Emma, why shouldn’t I send you a legal notice. But don’t fret just now. I have a lot in store for you. “ He states, sitting right beside me.
I move a seat back, in return but he grabs my hand and brings me closer with a jolt.
“ Don’t touch me. “ I hiss, annoyed by his cold behavior.
He was so caring these past few days.
“ It takes a lot of touching to produce a baby. “ He taunts, smirking devilishly.
“ Please, just take the notice back Lucas. “ I beg, holding his hands.
“ Marry me. “ He whispers, coming closer.
“ You know I can’t. “ I mumble, looking down.
“ I can’t even handle the company on my own and on top of that a child? I won’t be able to do that Lucas, you claim to love me then why are you putting me through all this. Please don’t do this. “ I plead, crying like a broken woman.
He looks at my condition and sighs.
“ It doesn’t have to be that way, Emma. I promise you, I’ll take care of the company, our baby, and you. You won’t have to worry about a thing, All you have to do is marry me, and all of these problems will fade away. That’s my promise to you. “ He whispers, gently putting a strand of hair behind its ear in a loving manner.
“ But I don’t love you. “ I utter, looking in his eyes now.
His facial expressions suddenly change, he changes his posture and moves his hands away. His attitude completely changing.
“ Very well then. Don’t blame me for what I do next. “ He states, getting up.
I look at him with despair. I thought he’d understand.
I go back home and eat something, feeding a very hungry Tim and me.
