Chapter 16: Chapter 16

Sofia is engulfed in Noah’s embrace and Noah seems to be whispering sweet words into her ear. Ever so gently, and lovingly.

At that exact moment, I feel my first heartbreak and my heart shatters into pieces.

“ Noah! “ I scream. He sees me and his eyes go wide. He backs up from Sofia a little.

“ Why are you screaming Emma? “ He asks irritated. He has no right to get angry.

“ And didn’t the maid tell you to wait? “ He asks in an interrogative manner.

Just then the maid arrives.

“ Sir I...I did. But Miss didn’t listen. “ The maid speaks.

The maid then drags me to another room.  It seems to be a living room. It is enormous though, in the middle of the room is a coffee table made from pine wood. A chandelier hangs in the middle of the room, giving the room a different vibe.

In the middle of the room is a large fireplace. The wall is adorned by large glass windows. In short, it is a beautiful sight.

I spend my next 10 minutes overthinking and then Noah finally arrives.

“ What were you doing with her? Why is she back? Didn’t you guys break up? Are you cheating on me? “ I bombard him with all these questions.

“ Wait…what? “ He asks confused.

I just wipe my tears decide to leave. I feel so stupid right now.

Noah grabs my arm before I can leave and pulls me back, caging within his arms, our chests colliding.

“ Emma, we are never getting back together. She ended it “

“ Then what was that? “ I ask.

“ Andrew, her boyfriend broke up with her. She is on the news, everywhere. She came crying to me not because she wants to get back with me but because she is tired of all the drama and wants to lay low and get her mind off things. Emma, you need to trust me with this one. “ Noah speaks with such sincerity that I believe him, not caring that man filler with magic and charms stand in front of me.

“ Okay…I’m sorry for overreacting. I’m honestly a little insecure, I don’t want to be but I can’t help it. “ I admit.

“ I understand, I’m not the easiest person to deal with. “ He admits too.

“ Anyways, since you were not feeling well and your head was hurting I decided to bring you some homemade tea. It’s my mother’s secret tea, it always helps relax your nerves. “ I say proudly.

He hums in response. I pour him the hot tea and sit beside him. We chat a little and then I decide to head home as I promised to read Tim a bedtime story.

“ I have to go. “ I say trying to get off his lap. But, he pulled me in his lap and started smothering me with butterfly kisses all over my neck.

He groans in disapproval.

“ You have to? “ He asks a little sad.

“ Yes, I promised to read Tim a bedtime story. It’s getting late Noah. “

“ Fine, I’ll come to visit Tim when I get some time. I miss him and thank you for the tea lovers, it worked like magic. “ He comments, kissing me on the cheek one last time before finally letting me go.

“ My driver will drop you. “ He tells.

“ No, you don’t need to bother Noah. It doesn’t take much time. “ I deny politely.

“ I’m not telling you, besides it’s late at night. You’d be safer. “ He speaks with authority, leaving no room for argument.

I agree and let his driver drop me. I reach home and eat dinner with Tim and then read him a bedtime story.

I feel bad for doubting Noah like that, it’s just a little hard for him to express his feelings. Some people have these walls, that are hard to break. I guess Noah is one of those people.

The next morning, I woke up early, did my morning routine, and put in a little extra effort in my dressing.

I then rushed to the office. To my surprise, Noah was already there.

“ Good morning, do you need your regular black coffee? “ I ask.

“ That would not be needed, I already gave him his coffee, just how he likes it. So you won’t be needed. “ Says Sophia slyly.

“ Oh…ok but what are you doing here? You don’t work here. “ I point out the obvious.

“ Oh I do, Noah let me work in here for some time. To get my mind off things. Besides I’ve done a master’s in business, I mean I’m not a college dropout like you so I would know what I am doing. “ She says, throwing shade at me.

I pitied her in the beginning but what a bitch!

“ Emma make yourself useful, mail this letter to all the clients mentioned on the list. “ He orders.

I look down with shame.

“ Actually…Noah, I don’t…I don’t know how to send formal emails. “ I reply.

He moves his head sharply.

“ Are you serious? “ He asks. I nod

“ Don’t worry Noah. I’ll do it within minutes. “ Sophia replies hurriedly.

“ Emma, you need to learn sooner or later, so it’s better if you do it sooner. You know what? Just go and clean, that’s the only thing you’re good at here. “ He replies arrogantly.

I feel ashamed, I’m not asking for any special benefits as his girlfriend but at least he should respect my feelings and treat me with respect.

I go away from them and start doing my chores. At lunchtime, I fetch Noah’s lunch.

I put the lunch on the table and put it on plates. On the way back, I bought us two cute marshmallows, I thought he’d like that as a sweet.

Noah comes for lunch, and Sophia also follows him.

“ Oh thank you, Emma, I was famished. “ She says.

I didn’t bring it to her.

“ Oh, what are those? “ She asks pointing at the colorful marshmallows.

“ I bought it for Noah along with the food, I found it cute. “

“ Of we won’t be needing those. “ She says dismissively, throwing it in the bin.

That is it! I have had enough.

“ Stop pestering in, I didn’t bring it for you I bought it for Noah. If you are hungry, go get yourself a meal, I do not work for you, and neither am I going to listen to your taunts. Besides what the hell are you doing here? No wonder your boyfriend dumped you- “

“ Enough. I don’t want a single word out of your mouth. “ He booms.

“ But Noah… “ I try to explain my side.

“ Emma stay within your fucking limits and behave like a fucking employee. You have no authority to behave in such away. “ He shouts in anger.

“ I…I don’t believe you. “ I say and run out of his office.

Do I mean nothing to him? All the time we spent together is nothing as soon as Sophia appears in front of him. Why does he do that to me?

I spend the rest of the time staying away from his office.

Meet me at ******.

Lucas

Lucas? Oh, the guys I met at the party, the one Noah dislikes. Why does he want to meet me?

Trust me, we both hate the same person. We can both benefit from this.

I decide to ignore his messages at first as I do not trust him. I decided to pick my bag from Noah’s office.

I am about to pick my purse but then I see Sophia making tea for Noah. I step forward, a little quiet to see she is mixing something in his tea.

After she is done, she steps back and I hide.

After she has left the kitchen, I step inside. In the trash can, I find the box in which the medicine was kept.

Reading the name of it, I realize that this is an illegal medicine, given to mental patients. If used on a normal person, it can mess with their brain.

But why is Sophia giving it to Noah? I thought she wanted Noah back, but the matter seems much deeper than that.

Something fishy is going in and why does Lucas want to meet me?
